Am I reading this NBC Sports announcement correctly? It’s hard to know wtf is going on anymore, but it sure seems like they jacked up the price and made it more difficult to watch games.  I’m at a complete loss here.  I used to love these people, and now I hate these people.

meh - its the way of the world now.

For fans of the Big 6, its probably not a value buy.  Big 6 will be shown weekly - except for 4 matches that are reserved for the Gold package.

I would be inclined to pay for the Match Day pass at $40 - but that only includes live matches (no replays) - so that would cost me $10 each to watch 4 Spurs matches - assuming I was available to watch them live.  But, I don't watch any of the non-game programming they have - nor would I be inclined to watch it even if I paid for it.  I do like the ability to re-watch matches though...

And, it is getting harder to find streams on-line.

It’s going up 15 bucks for the season so not the worst but still bs.

This reminds me of a project the reddit geeks are working on.  They held a vote to see what 1 man team (same player playing all 11 positions) would be the best.  You assume the player would be in his prime.

The winner was Yaya, but there was enough spread in the votes that they are writing simulation program to compare various one man teams.

Have they announced anything with respect to the Rugby World Cup coverage? If there is some overlap between whatever package you have to buy to get that and this PL stuff I will consider it, but I have a feeling they are going to have a completely separate thing for rugby.

NBC Sports has chosen the a la carte model of selling separate streaming packages for individual niche sports (motoX, IndyCar, Cycling, etc.) versus the smorgasbord model of ESPN+ with a bundle of second-tier properties at a single monthly rate.  The business is still new enough for different strategies and they're marketing to a small, hardcore audience.  It is interesting to see NBC effectively doubling down this season with a two-tier product.

As a cheapskate, I guess I prefer ESPN's approach but not enough to fork over the cash.  I watch too much sports already

The increased cost sucks, but it’s far from the main issue. Why so complicated? Or maybe I’m just thick. I can’t always watch live, but to force me to wait 4 hours before it’s available on delay? Different tiers and packages that overlap but have weird restrictions? Other games made available at 10 pm central? What is the point of all this? I would happily pay twice the price if they would just give me all the games available when I want them like it’s always been.

I doubt there will be any overlap. I don’t think it has been announced yet. Can’t be much worse than the last one.

I don't think its overly complicated - NBC wants you to pay for the full package.  Their costs are constant - no matter the number of subscribers, so they are trying to make it worth your while to buy the Premier League Pass.

Its a simple business decision for them.

I think I get that part, but the product they are offering makes no sense to me, and I imagine most others.  As far as I can tell, if I pay for their top tier package, I get all 380 games. 140 of those I can watch live, but I can't pause, fast forward or rewind.  Why not?  Its 7 a.m. on a Saturday, and I'm doling out bacon and eggs to the kids, so usually I like to pause the game here or there to deal with my weekend morning stuff.  If I miss it live, I have to wait 4 hours.  That's almost completely useless to me. The other 240 (which I could watch live with a separate subscription), are not available live, but I can watch them beginning at 10:00 p.m. on gameday.  Does this make sense to anyone?

I skimmed, so caveat etc.

but I thought the cheaper version allowed no pausing/recording etc. the expensive version did.

no pausing/rewinding/recording is idiotic.

IMO they make this way too complicated. I only have interest in one team, and until they give me an option of subscribing to that alone I am not buying anything.

I would consider a package with all games, IF I could have them truly on demand.

Not having games available until 9pm on game day is silly. Tons of full game replay sites for free online, which will post the games with an hour delay tops.

I'll take a PM . :oldunsure:

Ever since the reddit with soccer streams went down, its too much effort for me to find a stream (even if delayed) for the few games when Spurs are not on the NBC app.

fullmatchesandshows dot com slash premierleague is one of the good ones, usually have all games in HD shortly after full time (one hour-ish)

I can send you more closer to the season, once I confirm they are still active.

Just be thankful you're not a Serie A aficionado...I spit in ESPN's general direction...

Bob Kraft "we are spending $12m on a player in one season?  That is more than we have spent on all players combined in 23 years.  I better get in the picture"

discovered by curt onalfo... younger brother of former college team mate cliff. just googled him, and google says he and a partner recently bought spanish side reus (shaq moore's old/current team). I'm in the wrong business, apparently.

speaking of soccer owners, rocco has provided free tickets to all soccer alums for the fiorentina v benefica game at RB stadium. I've got some, but no date. if anybody's interested, let me know.

This is awesome.

Orlando and NYC went to pk's tonight in Orlando in the Open Cup.

NYC won the coin flip and chose the empty and closed end of the stadium, opposite from where the Orlando supporters sat, to hold the shootout.

The Orlando supporters sprinted the length of the stadium, broke through the feeble security trying to hold them back and filled the section.

Orlando won on pK's to reward them :)

After a lot of deliberation this summer I have decided to retire from football ! Our wonderful game has given me everything. I’m so thankful to everyone who helped me get there and to help me stay there for so long. X

NACHOS!

FIFA has added a rule that if a ref abandons a game due to racist behavior of a teams supporters, that team will forfeit the match.

The likelihood of a ref doing this and living to walk out of a stadium is minimal, so while it is a step in the right direction, I wonder if we will ever see this happen.

The rule goes into effect on Monday for all international and club play.

We've discussed the problems with it, but I'm still in favor of draconian methods hammering home teams for this.

Sad to see the robot go.  But its time.  and he had probably the greatest answer to an interview question ever.

When asked what he would be if he wasnt playing soccer, he responded "A Virgin"

I get that 538 likes to religiously stick to their statistical models and such, but if your model has Atalanta 4 spots above Juventus, wouldn't you want to adjust the model a bit before putting it out there?  I would want to spend some time tweaking a few things to make sure a team that finished 21 points behind the league champion isn't ranked above them.  If you have Olympiakos as the 9th best club in the world, you're objectively wrong.  As much as I like to laugh at ManUnited's downcycle, if your rankings model has Young Boys of the Swiss League ranked higher than Manchester United, your model sucks.

Pure guess, but...

Juve was winless in their last five games and Atalanta won four.  The model has no idea that the league was already wrapped up and those were basically exhibition games for Juventus.  Also noticed yesterday that in the offseason the team score is 2/3rds of the score at the end of the season and 1/3 the market value of the team.  So maybe there's some transfer timing in there as well.

tl;dr -- it's a fluke that will probably right itself quickly once the season starts.

I was thinking maybe they have Max rated way higher than Sarri.

Just noticed that 538 has ranked the top 636 clubs in the world.  The worst club that made these rankings is the Tacoma Defiance of the USL League.

The Austin Bold, who I don't believe has ever played a game, is ranked 562, ahead of many English clubs in League One including Wimbledon, Blackpool and yes, S####horpe (617).

Newcastle United to make Steve Bruce worst-paid manager in the Premier League

MirrorFootball can reveal owner Mike Ashley has worked out an incentive-driven salary which will see Bruce collect an extra payment for every place Newcastle finish above the bottom three.

I'm really happy that fate made me adopt a completely dysfunctional franchise as my Premier League team. I've been preparing for this through my Pittsburgh Pirates fandom for decades and I think I'm ready.
