The papers in Uruguay are reporting that LAFC has signed arguably the best young player in the country in Brian Rodriguez for $11.5m.  He was probably the best player on their U20 WC team.

If this is true, and he is able to adapt quickly, LAFC will be just loaded offensively.

Spending big on starlets is higher risk but potentially higher reward if Europe takes an interest in a few years.  I'm sure Penarol would get their share via sell-ons.

I think Almiron really opened the owners eyes as to the risk/reward aspect.  Atlanta made a very nice profit off of him, easily the biggest in MLS history. They bought him for $8m and sold for $27m

Looks like the Galaxy may trump LAFC

LA Galaxy reportedly set to break the #MLS transfer record signing Pavón for $18m. Not done yet but very close

======

It's official: Inter Miami CF have signed the first two players in club history. The club on Friday announced the acquisition of two young Argentines: left winger Matias Pellegrini and forward Julian Carranza, both of whom were linked to the 2020 expansion side earlier this summer.

Pellegrini, 19, joins Miami on a transfer from Estudiantes de La Plata as a Young Designated Player and will remain on loan with the Superliga Argentina outfit through January 2020.

Carranza, also 19, joins via transfer from Banfield and will also remain on loan at that club until January 2020.

Sounds like it was around $20m for both players.

Nice to see the investments going to young players.  I was afraid Miami was going to go all old like NYCFC did their first year.

The Frank De Boer Pity Martinez love affair continues

Down a goal on the road against the best team in the league. You have the reigning South American Footballer of the Year, the league’s most expensive ever player, a 2x Libertadores winner who is playing well in a furious comeback. What do you do? If you’re FdB, you take him off

Sam Stejskal

What on earth is De Boer doing taking out Pity. Awful.

Alexi Lalas

Come to @MLS they said.  @ATLUTD will love you they said. You'll dominate they said. It's a gateway to Europe they said

Paul Tenorio

Wrong decision. Period. Battle of egos at this point

Taylor Twellman

Has Pity been great?! No but taking him out of the game tonight in the moment FDB did is inexplicable. It’s almost as if he’s premeditated the moves without seeing the game unfold.  @ATLUTD fans have every right to question it.

Big words coming from this cheap cash cow clown. Mike Ashely I mean Cashley called out RAFA saying he picked China over staying at Newcastle for the $$$$$$. No Mike he left because you're a bloody cheap c**t.

Cashley also said he might own the club forever

@NewlyRetiredOrlando City the gift that keeps on giving.  Arena has really turned it around for you guys.  Thank goodness for Cincy or we would probably be finishing dead last again this year.

What has Atlanta, NYFC, LAFC done that Orlando hasn't is it the front office? Money spent? I just don't get how there is no improvement year after year.  It gets frustrating.  Especially for my wife who has to sit through all the F bombs I threw tonight.

It is amazing that a Revs team that looked so inept (and I mean lose every game in the USL bad) now has gone 11 straight games with no loss.  They look competent now.  It should come to a crashing halt against LAFC next though.

As for Orlando, they are stuck a little in old MLS mode.  Their two biggest signing are Kaka and Nani.  I think in the last 3-4 years the league has moved away from that model with more and more teams looking to South America for younger talent.

Not really what they need, and they'll probably ship four goals a game, but Arsenal's projected front three of Auba, Lacazette, and Pepe is going to make me petition FBG's to add the chef's kiss emoji.

I know his rep took a hit, but he's still a great coach IMO.

I sometimes wonder when you see a turn around so massive like this if it says more about the previous coach than the new coach.  It feels like the team absolutely quit on Friedel because they hated him.

Something has clearly changed in the Revs financial out look.

In the space of a few months the Krafts(penny pinchers to the extreme over the years) oked

* A $35m training and development facility to house the first team and the academy

* Hired Arena, who most long time followers think may cost most than every other Revs coach in history, combined

* Demolished the old record for player expenditure on a single player.  The most before was Germany Jones at $3.5m (salary+fee) where Gustavo Bou looks to be over $12m

NYC just scouts (thanks Man City) very very well and is willing to spend (though not as much in the past).  They are very deep up front in Heber, Mitrita, Maxi, Castenellos, ITS, Stevens (I’m missing a couple of guys) and have technical defensive middish players in Ring, Parks, and Sands.

They have a whole bunch of TAM level guys and who are boarderline DP players on a lot of other teams who their Euro scouts obviously like, but aren’t Man City good.  It’ll be interesting to see how long it is until they sell them back to Europe.

To be fair to the ICC games (and of course they're a sham), Juventus/Spurs and United went to Asia.  They were substituted by the likes of Benfica, Fiorentina and Chivas

I was mildly tempted to catch the Real Madrid/Bayern game at NRG in Houston, however a) was out of town that weekend and b) the cheapest tickets were like $65 each before fees and taxes.  Certainly was a showcase game, but ICC is going to cut off casual fans with their pricing on these at NFL stadiums.

Icc games are too expensive for preseason friendlies with b/c teamers playing most of the minutes.

I'm only going if there's a player(s) I really want to see (for limited minutes) and/or the ticket is free.

I'm not surprised ticket sales lagged

Barcelona and Chelsea went to Japan too.

Can't see them dropping prices, but they are way too high particularly considering the expensive NFL concession prices too. Paying ~$100 plus ~$11 beers to sit in the hot sun and watch backups is not fun.

I think the ICC has always spread the games around the globe - Spurs were in Asia this year, and will play one more ICC game in London this weekend.

Most games have been in the US - but I think European clubs are trying to grow marketshare in both US and Asia - so I expect the bigger clubs to rotate their pre-season schedules accordingly.  (Spurs actually did Australia and US last summer - with a post-season trip to Australia and then a pre-season US tour for the ICC - but Spurs have an Asian shirt sponsor that probably dictates that they go to the Asia region on a regular basis.)

Even if the big stars are playing, which is usually the case, the exhibition games are just completely uninteresting to me.  The main appeal of this sport to me is to see the incredible speed and skill of these athletes in person, filling up the entire field with their speed and passing.  It is markedly different than watching on television. These exhibition games are played at 3/4 speed, with massive substitutions, limited tactics, often with very little intensity compared to a competitive game. Secondly, the atmosphere sucks.  These crowds are normally a mish-mash of casual fans, so the atmosphere is lacking compared to a real game where the crowds are mostly supporting one team or the other.  I"m not saying I need to be at the San Siro or something to enjoy the game, but I'd rather see my local NPSL team or one of the local college or high school teams playing a real game that go to one of these circus shows.  The price is a factor as well of course, but its not everything.  I paid a ridiculous amount for me and my son to see Argentina play Panama in the Centenario a few summers ago.  As far as I know, those games were the only real competitive games Leo Messi has ever played on US soil.  The crowd was awesome. Messi came on in the 60th minute and scored three goals in 20 minutes. That was money well-spent.

even national friendlies have more energy as it's typically guys playing for a spot, or at least the shirt. these ICC games are veterans just trying to shake the rust off and not get hurt, and then nobodies running around like mad with little to no organization. if we didn't have soccer games on tv 24/7- might be interesting- but we do.

I saw leo play vs the US in the meadowlands... which I originally remembered being a gold-cup or some other cup game.. .but I think might have just been a friendly.

I also saw the inaugural RB Arena game featuring RBs vs Santos and a very young Neymar. I was there more for the stadium and neymar than the game itself (IIRC, the RBs won).

friendly highlight for me was RM vs Roma at meadowlands with RM playing all their galacticos. that's the only time I've gotten to see Zidane play live, and it was breathtaking.

Meh - I think these "friendlies" are pretty decent value for the money if you want to see a particular team.  While these are not full-paced, they are not simply run outs against 4th tier level opponents either.

Given that the other option to see a team play is to head to Europe - this is a little less expensive.  Not much, but a little.

(When I went to see Spurs in Nashville - I also got to watch a training session, and I assume that most teams offer something similar, which was free and you were much closer to seeing the players).

I'd love to see the training sessions.

and don't get me wrong- if tickets were $25-65, I'd be interested. but paying 65 to sit in the nosebleeds where I might as well be watching on TV- for a game where the stars are clearly not trying too hard for the 15-45 minutes they actually play... no gracias.

agree

When United and City played in Houston 2 years ago, I was going.  Tickets for lower level were like 125 after fees which I had no issues with.  Was a solid atmosphere and I knew I was only going to see first teamers playing 1/2 the game, didn't care.  Pogba was without a doubt the most talented player I have ever seen live.  His touches are just incredible and he looks like he's not even trying (okay he probably wasn't) and is still miles classier than the average player.  City didn't bring the strongest of squads, but didn't care.

But, for RM/BM the same seats were $200+ each BEFORE fees.  effffffff that.

The Spurs women's team had not lost in 28 games and then lost 10-0 to the women's Arsenal team.
It has taken a few years/promotions - but this season, Spurs women are finally in the same league as Arsenal.  The 16/17 squad was a semi-pro team, 17/18 was the first year as a fully professional team, and last year (18/19) they secured promotion to the Women's Super League.

They will still be a fair bit below Arsenal, but I think they can avoid a 10-0 shellacking this season...I hope   :oldunsure:

Arsenal are the defending Champions, while Spurs and Man United are the two promoted clubs.

I'll go to anything nearby with Barcelona nearby.  Games where I'm a neutral, harder to justify.

Unless they are playing in my town, and I have an interest in the team, no way.

I priced out going to one of the games last year, and between flights, hotels, tickets etc it was almost a wash. I could go see a real game in Europe for about the same price.
