Turned on NBCSports Sunday morn just to see what they were showing.

Saw the end of Tottenham at West Ham (Jose's Spurs win 3-2) then United's opening day match vs Chelsea.  Knowing the outcome of the United game, I got to watch specific players and analyze their play.  Specifically watched Lingard, Pereira and Pogba.

1) watching Pereira and Lingard's movement.  Wanted to see who was wide right and how their positioning compared to Rashford who was wide left.  In the middle of the pitch, Rashford never entered the center circle.  If he did it was in coordination with Martial going wide.  Both Lingard and Pereria constantly did and were often standing next to each other leaving the wing wide for a Chelsea attack.  They both ran a lot, usually without reason, mostly to get back into position since they were both out of theirs.

2) Their passing and receiving.  Lingard's best passes were usually 2 yard touches to get Pogba on the ball.  Both gave away several passes and often waited for the ball to get to them allowing the Chelsea player to intercept.  The Martial goal was a nice end result and a good cross by Pereira.

3) Pogba did'nt do much through the game.  He had some good passes but was often just there.  His two assists were nice but they make his day look better then it was.  McT did most of the dirty work.

Overall the result was not indicative of the game.  Chelsea were the better team for stretches of the game, hit the bar twice and De Gea had a great save.  United finished its chances, Chelsea didn't.  You could tell right away Lingard/Pereira were not up to the level needed.  And Bruno is everything Pogba was supposed to be.  Hopefully, Bruno can continue and Pogba can just go play without the pressure of being the leader.

C'mon, somebody has to have the '78 World Cup games in a vault somewhere, don't they? Put that sucker out there, people will watch. (roadkill, like soylent green, is people)

I think that helps - but I still think leagues will be facing a hard deadline of July 1.

Player contracts that expire, can't simply magically extend themselves - even in a crisis.

The hardest part will be making the call to start up again.  Admittedly, given how loathe the PL were to shut down in the first place, they will undoubtedly be the first to open back up.  But, there is the risk that the virus impact will be longest in England, since they were the last to really embrace social distancing as a solution.

As a purely selfish response, I think completing the league is in Spurs best interest, as its very likely that Kane, Son and Sissoko will all be back before the next match.  If they canceled the season, and awarded European spots based on current standings - it would hurt Spurs.  A fully healthy squad has a chance to make up ground.

Seeing reports of teams cancelling training.  When the leagues decide to come back, you basically have to go through preseason again just to play the last 9-10 games.  Say 2-3 weeks of training, and still wondering about game fitness?  Do you have friendlies to play? Time frames may not allow it, esp if you want time off before next season

Are we just talking Domestic Leagues?  Anything on domestic and European Cups?

I guess United is only off for 3 days, for now.  So if they and others are training, maybe restarting wont be as hard.  But still game fitness will be a question.
Spurs are still training - but I think that is more a function of how poorly England prepared for this from the government down, where they were very slow to recognize social distancing as important.

As England changes its approach, I think it will be harder for teams to keep training.

World Soccer Talk @worldsoccertalk

Costa Rican soccer league has just been suspended, so now we're down to

- Turkish Super Lig (beIN SPORTS)

- A-League (ESPN+)

- W-League (ESPN+)

Games from all 3 leagues are scheduled to be played behind closed doors this weekend.

I'm not sure I can survive a global pandemic AND the goaltending in that tournament.

Per BBC:

Coronavirus: English football suspension extended until at least 30 April

ETA:

All games in England's Premier League, EFL, Women's Super League and Women's Championship, and all fixtures in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, are currently postponed.

The Football Association has also agreed that the current season can be "extended indefinitely" beyond the original end date of 1 June.*

*Once again VAR coming to Liverpool's rescue...

https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2882042-report-epl-clubs-will-have-to-repay-part-of-tv-money-if-season-not-finished

Premier League clubs will reportedly have to repay broadcast revenue if the 2019-20 season is not completed as scheduled because of the coronavirus outbreak.

Executives from all 20 Premier League clubs have been informed that £762 million in TV money will be lost if the season does not finish, according to The Athletic.

The clubs were made aware of the situation during an emergency meeting on Thursday, and some are "determined to get games played behind closed doors" to avoid having to pay back sums, per the report.

The Premier League have announced it is committed to completing the season but has extended the current suspension until April 30.

PL teams are so ####### greedy.  They really did not want to shut down at all.

France - Brazil 2006?

Portugal-Spain Ronaldo hat trick game?

US v Germany 2002?

England - Argentina 1986?

US v Germany 2002?

This one is probably only for US fans interest but this still remains the best game the US ever played for me (and I have seen nearly every single game that he been aired since the late 80's), even though they lost.

It is better than the 2-0 win over Spain because that was one of those bunker and hope to counter games and the US scored on basically their only 2 chances.  Against Germany they bossed the game almost for 90 minutes.

Watching the ultra fit German team literally collapse on the field after the whistle blew to end the game still sticks in my head.

I watched that about four years ago.  Totally insane. Beckenbauer flying around with his arm in a sling.  Just an insanely intense match for the right to go get waxed by the greatest team of all time in the final.

Italy eliminating Brazil in 82 is another absurdly entertaining game, even if it still makes me want to cry.
I just watched (most of) this game a few nights ago on https://footballia.net/ when I was looking for a sports fix late at night.  I saw it kept coming up on "best games ever" lists so I checked it out and it didn't disappoint.  One highlight for me was Gerd Muller's spectacular sideburns.

Although it was a poor tournament showing overall, the 1-1 against Italy in 2006 is also one I'll never forget.

Brazil 3-2 Netherlands in 1994 was a great game as well.  Combined with the US win over Colombia it helped pique my interest for the first time.

Those were also among a handful of games that converted me, along with my first in-person DC United game (1996), Ajax - Atletico in the Champions League Q-finals (1997) and then USA 2-0 Guatemala live at RFK (1997 - still the dirtiest game I've ever seen).

ETA:  it's weird to think of those in person games now.  Already miss the idea of being part of a crowd.

Sunderland Til I die Season 2 out next month - :hype:
Watching Season 1 now to help fill the void. It’s pretty great, and also required viewing for up-and-coming Yankee Geordies like myself who are taught to hate all things Sunderland. I haven’t quite internalized that hatred yet, but I’m working on it, outside of Jordan Pickford and his tiny little useless hands. He’s terrible and I want him to fail at everything.

I'm spacing on their "star" that totally underperformed and essentially brought the team down due to his wages....? I can visualize his face, not his name.

Who does everyone follow on Twitter for soccer content.

I finally had to unfollow grant Wahl last night. He's been absolutely insufferable this week with the coronavirus stuff.

To be fair, he gets good info from his wife.

I'm sure he does. I just dont need to hear the constant doom and gloom. I get it....he has a platform and there's nothing else to talk about right now. That's what the unfollow button is for.

The "I talked to my brother last night and I dont think there should be billionaires" was the last straw for me.

I did miss that one.  I tend to gloss over most of his tweets.  And he got a little too preachy (for my tastes) on the whole US Soccer implosion.
