[Fabrizio Romano] Watford are working to appoint Roy Hodgson as new head coach in the coming hours. Final details to be discussed in the morning - Hodgson's waiting for his Premier League comeback.   Two Italian managers were also in the list but Pozzo wants to go for Hodgson.

@GaryLineker: So @WatfordFC have given it to Roy Hodgson until the end of the season. Surprised they’ve agreed such a long contract.

Sadio Mane and the CV keeper both briefly knocked out on the 2nd red card for CV.  Mane very lucky if he avoided injury on the way down.  Both looked more or less limp as they went down, but Mane had a lot more height and momentum.

The keeper was still wobbling like 3 minutes later, as he tried to fight the guys getting him off the field.

ETA:  whoa.  Just saw that Mane stayed on after that and scored a few minutes later before having to be taken off in the 70th for the head injury.

And here a shot of the pair at the hospital later.

Seems a questionable red.  (Not a big controversy in the grand scheme of the AFCON, but still...)

I thought so too until I watched it a couple times.  Keeper tries to wait in his box then at the last minute realize the bounce isn't going to get there and Mane is.  So he reacts late and is beaten to the ball by Mane who's caught clean with a headbutt.  I don't think the keeper meant to do it, but he didn't get the ball because he was late and knocked Mane out.

CAF has instructed the refs to crack down on the physical play that's always been a part of African football. The first time use of VAR in this tournament also seems to have changed decisions from yellow to red.  I wonder if they're responding to t European clubs' complaints about releasing players by trying to reduce injuries.

totally

I have always thought about that. or catching it under your shirt and running with it (although I think that counts as handball).

we had two club teams in our district that were comprised of all the best players in the district (and made up our district team)- so our games against each other were usually intense. one of these, the opposing 10 and I are battling for a ball in the middle of the park and it popped up between his knees - no intent- but he randomly just caught it there. We actually made eye contact- and I could see he was confused (me too). I was about to tee up on him (and the ball)...when he started hopping forward with it, bunny (Blanco) style. something about the whole thing- I fell over laughing... leaving the teeing up to my 6- who leveled the kid.

Looks like Newcastle are a medical away from snagging Bruno Guimarães from Lyon. Not as close, but close, is Brighton’s Dan Burn.

Doyle's a great analyst, but he's the MLS version of everyone's worst nightmare of a Eurosnob.  There's no bigger MLS stan/troll working today.

The fact that he's the one Tweeting that is perfect and on point in every way.

Who has the stronger brand?  Zlatan or Ronaldo?
lol

I started watching the Juve in-season doc from last year (the one with Swag's disgusting everybody with his culinary exploits). CRo's inclusion is funny for what you're pointing out... very carefully curated off-field appearances.

but as opposed to the Sunderland one that completely glossed over the California Messi, Swag gets a fair bit of focus here...even if it's just comments from other guys. Sadly, his CL golasso vs Barca gets short shrift amidst CRo's brace.

I really think CRo might be the right answer here...

John Muller@johnspacemuller

“Transfermarkt put a list (on IG) with 10 player values, 33 and older, and Ronaldo was still in first place, but he said he must be worth much more. He sent a message to our social media guys. They answered him, explained why. He sent some smilies, and then he blocked us.”

Giovinco is apparently in the TFC camp, trying to get back onto the team- currently out of contract. TFC has the 3rd allocation spot so would have to get that sorted first.

Is there any word on Jozy?

Toronto continues its impressive off season

================

[Stejskal] Late night news: Source tells me that Toronto FC has completed its deal to sign Carlos Salcedo from Tigres. The Mexican center back will be a DP for TFC. Ex-TFC DP Yeferson Soteldo headed the other way. He leaves Toronto for Tigres after one disappointing season in Canada.

Frank Lampard will sign as new Everton manager in the coming hours, confirmed. Decision has been communicated also to Vitor Pereira and Duncan Ferguson tonight. #EFC Everton are preparing contracts and final clauses to complete the appointment. Frankie's back.

maybe they can take CP on loan and get his pre-Tuchel mojo back.

It's another nice AFCON run for Burkina Faso.  This is the third time in the last five tournaments that they've reached the semifinals. That's a lot of success for a nation that's never qualified for the WC finals as either Burkina Faso or Upper Volta.

Yeah, The Mars Volta was always more successful than the other Voltas.

Dan Burn done now. Pretty great window for the Mags imo, considering new owners, it’sa January window, and they’re staring at relegation. Despite that, they snagged class players some big clubs wanted in Trippier and Bruno G. as well as a couple gritty relegation fighters in Wood and Burn. Window still open, hopefully they can get another striker and other depth on loan or something, but I’m pleased if this is it. Still might go down but you can’t say the owners didn’t try. And they may have paid more than necessary but they also didn’t give in to grand larceny, either (like with ManU’s Lingard demands.)

eta: not that there weren’t some issues, like too much of this being in public, but I can chalk that up to their inexperience as well as leaky agents driving up prices.

injury?
Worse.  More like a Rihanna/Chris Brown situation going on.

His girlfriend says he beat the hell out of her and uploaded pictures this morning showing herself bleeding from the mouth and with bruises all over.  Multiple other women have now commented that she's not alone in being abused by him.  Basically his career is over.

Yuck if true.

There is also some leaked recorded audio which is really, really, really disturbing.  Yuck..

Can't keep these types of deal out of the media anymore.  Agents would not be doing their job if they were not shopping their players around looking for a bigger pay-day.
