UEFA moving the Champions League final from Russia after it declared war on Ukraine. No word yet on where the final will be. Wembley not an option with Football Championship playoffs that weekend there.

I'd say Istanbul would be a fun choice, but they host it next year. Vienna maybe.

Stuttgart removing Gazprom from their kits.

I suppose it's extremely insensitive to be concerned about the effects of war sanctions on a football club's resources in the summer transfer window.

CONCACAF Champions League Quarterfinal Matchups

León vs Seattle

Comunicaciones vs NYCFC

Pumas vs New England

CF Montréal Impact vs Cruz Azul

At least this is close enough for some fans to get to this time

NYCFC says its “primary and secondary home venues, Yankee Stadium and Citi Field, remain unapproved by CONCACAF and Red Bull Arena is unavailable for this match. NYCFC has played competitive matches at Pratt & Whitney Stadium on two previous occasions.”

I think that's the place I saw the US play T&T in a WCQ years ago.

not an easy NYC trip without driving. and for that T&T game, we missed most of the first half just trying to park- complete disaster that has hopefully been fixed this century. hope they can get a turnout for it.

So- 3x Mex, 4x MLS, 1x Guat.

MON vs CA is a pretty tasty matchup, given how good Mon looked so far.

Andy- and word on how Jozy been doing so far?

This is pathetic and embarrassing that NYFC can't even find a stadium let alone finance once. Paper champs anyway

here we go again. We’re the #2 seed this year, won 5-0, 7-0, 4-2 to get back to the championship game. We play Friday, the team we beat in the semis last year. Should be a crazy game. :banned:

Didn't work out this time.

Lost 1-2 in a very tight game. We were lucky to get some of these kids all on one team together. Not all the time a little 800 person school gets three kids that will go on to play D1 soccer in the same team. Our senior will play at UC Davis next year, and the other two are only sophomores (  :lmao:  ), but they will 100% play at the next level. It's been a fun end to my son's high school footy career.

Erikson played in his first match since his heart attack in Euros for Brentford vs Newcastle. DIdn't watch the match  as I slept in after a long night with a really close friend I haven't seen in yrs and stupid Peacock won't let me watch the  replay till the next day. Meanwhile Paramount plus lets me match a match with in a hour or so of completion. There's a lot of things I hate about the Peacock app, Bad search function can't replay matches till the next day, clunky lay out, images seem to be super imposed etc.

I don't understand this.  If he is still likely providing the funding and not selling the club, is this just a veiled PR move?

PR move to get attention off the Ukraine situation from an owner who for Central Intellagiance Agencies around the world has been known to "clean" Putin's money and Putin's Successor in office if something were to happen. Usually when statements like this are made the owner selling isn't too far behind.

Bielsa out at Leeds, Leeds, Leeds.

:sadbanana:

Rumors that Jesse Marsch will replace him.

I'm a little surprised that he would take that job now and not wait for an opening in summer.

- there's a chance Leeds gets sent down

-RB Leipzig is still alive in CL

ETA

uhhh, nm. Leipzig sacked him in December. DOH!

Nothing to see here, carry on

@FootballJOE: According to multiple reports, Spartak Moscow are set to be removed from this season's Europa League, with opponents Leipzig advancing to the next stage https://twitter.com/FootballJOE/status/1498275319731658761/photo/1

Russian Federation has been removed from all FIFA events as well. International Junior hockey Association also bared Russia and took the JR Internationals out of Moscow.

Fifa and UEFA both took out a Russian Oil company sponsor from their side.

did that just happen?

last I heard FIFA was harshly... HARSHLY... punishing them by making russian teams play without the name of the country or flag. That'll show em. and then FIFA will HARSHLY accept the oil-money from ruskie tycoons.

UEFA initially issued some toothless penalties such as moving the CL final to France and the silly name thing.  Earlier today, both FIFA and UEFA suspended Russian teams from all competitions.  It appears this means the Russian national team is almost certainly out of the running for Qatar - they had a game against Poland scheduled later this month with the winner advancing to a play-in game a few days later.  It appears that Spartak Moscow are out of the Europa League and that their round of 16 opponent - RB Leipzig - will advance by default.

Ukraine is scheduled to play Scotland on March 24 in the playoffs for one of the three remaining UEFA spots in Qatar.  The winner would then play the winner of Wales/Austria on March 29.

Shakhtar and Dynamo Kyiv both played in the CL but are out. The Ukrainian Premier League is obviously suspended. I assume there are Russian Players on Ukrainian rosters and Ukrainian players in the Russian Premier League, but don't know any offhand.

I saw there were Russian league games going ahead as normal today.

I didin't even think about the cross-over of players. :(

There seems to me more and more noise, and a few credible reports, that Roman A. might truly be trying to sell Chelsea FC.

The Chelsea fans in the USMNT group I was in are in complete denial of this. I literally said he's selling the team and his statement is status quo for  big wig leaving, selling shares/company/team/business/etc and the statements of a stepping away are just the first step. 3-4 months later you hear news they are selling or out of the company.

He has too though only sense. He might have to sell on pennies to a dollar though because he's desperate and might have to take a loss. ALL OF HIS FOREIGN ASSETS ARE FROZEN. That's huge.

I've not seen any credible report that Abramovic's assets are frozen or that he's been sanctioned.  I did see that Alisher Usmanov - formerly co-owner of Arsenal and more recently associated with Everton - has been officially sanctioned by the EU due to his ties to Putin. There has been a ton of speculation, but no firm reports of a sale of Chelsea in the works. The thing that prompted my post above was an article in a Swiss Newspaper quoting Swiss billionaire Hansjörg Wyss - indicating he and at least 2 others have been approached by Chelsea about a possible sale. The comments about Chelsea are a small part of a larger interview.  A German friend send this to me earlier today.  No idea of the validity. Here's the money quote:

"Abramovich is one of Putin's closest advisers and friends. Like all other oligarchs, he is also in a panic. Abramovich is trying to sell all his villas in England. He also wants to get rid of Chelsea quickly. I and three other people received an offer on Tuesday to buy Chelsea from Abramovich."

I beg your pardon? Will you buy Chelsea?

"I have to wait four to five days now. Abramovich is currently asking far too much. You know, Chelsea owe him £2 billion. But Chelsea has no money. Means: Those who buy Chelsea should compensate Abramovich."

His assets will be frozen eventually. Why they haven't already is beyond me. This guy is one of the biggest scums of the earth. Putin guy and he's been heavily linked with Jeffrey Epstein. He's desperate at this point.

and Adams didn't get off the bench in their Pokal thumping of Hannover.

one funny moment- the 4th goal... the LB put a cross in from close range that got deflected weirdly over the GK and was heading into the net- but another teammate hammered it home right before it went in.

the LB was visibly pissed at the goal scorer, who at first looked like the guy was joking and then seemed to get pissed himself. fwiw- it would've been an own-goal if the guy hadn't hit it in... LB wouldn't have gotten credit regardless.

and amidst all the speculation over the last couple days, Abramovich has just confirmed that he is intending to sell the club.

"In the current situation, I have therefore taken the decision to sell the club, as I believe this is in the best interest of the club, the fans, the employees, as well as the club's sponsors and partners.

"The sale of the club will not be fast-tracked but will follow due process. I will not be asking for any loans to be repaid. This has never been about business nor money for me, but about pure passion for the game and club."

Abramovich is under pressure to sell because should the U.K. government sanction him, Chelsea could be seized as an asset. He would be unable to put any funds into the club and any sale would become extremely complicated.

Sources have told ESPN that Abramovich is seeking around £3 billion ($2.24 billion) for the Blues but his ability to negotiate is severely hampered by the timing of his decision, apparently influenced by mounting pressure on the U.K. government to seize the assets of high-value Russian individuals with links to Russia president Vladimir Putin's regime following the country's invasion of Ukraine. Abramovich has always strenuously denied any ties to Putin but Labour party leader Sir Keir Starmer publicly called on the government to impose sanctions on the Chelsea owner at Wednesday's session of Prime Minister's Questions.

vlahovic’s first time back at franchi and against fiorentina after his january transfer.  fans have a lot of animosity towards him, to put it mildly.

Abramovich said he's donate proceeds to Ukraine. this is despite the fact he has stock in a metal company that is involved in making the Russian Tanks invading Ukraine and 8 days before the invasion transferred money to an offshore account in Panama to his own personal account according to the DailyMail.

Also numerious managers non Russian are terminating their contracts with Russian Clubs. One of Everton's shareholders had Germany just sieze his 512 FT yacht. Yes you read that right

Fifa 22 has also removed the Russian National team and Russian clubs from their game as well.

MLS managers this offseason are having a field day on not holding back how much they hate their own front office  :)

[Favian Renkel] Matias Almeyda on the Houston Dynamo signing Hector Herrera,"First, I want to congratulate the league, Houston is a team that believes and a team that wants to win. What a blessing for their Manager."

I hope this is true and not just some media posturing

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has said that a biennial World Cup is “off the table” and that FIFA has realised the proposal is a “no go” for the sport.
