Then: So Frenkie De Jong agrees to defer 20 mill in wages from Barcelona to help them out during Covid.

Now: Man U is interested in De Jong. De Jong is not interested in playing for the 2nd best team in a city worse than Barcelona in every way, where he plays for his dream club.

De Jong is grudgingly willing to go to ManU, but he'd prefer Chelsea, who is sniffing around.

Barcelona says, oh snap! We forgot to tell you, we only want to pay you 3 of the 20 mill we owe you, to facilitate this move you don't want to make in the first place.

How does Barcelona thread this needle, I would love to know

MLS signs another massive deal and I am so old I am not even sure what this means

Fresh off its groundbreaking media rights deal with Apple, Major League Soccer has selected IMG Arena as its official data distribution partner, with broad implications for fan engagement through sports betting, broadcast and the league’s digital properties.

IMG Arena will launch three live data feeds of varying comprehensiveness, offer streaming in sports betting apps, layer visualizations on broadcasts and generate new interactive experiences in the MLS app and on the websites for the league and its clubs. A source with knowledge of the situation pegged its value as north of $270 million for the duration of the deal.

Are there any two teams run worse than Barca and United at this point?

United needs to stop begging a player to join them that doesn't want to.  And sell any that do not want to be there.

Barca is having a very strange summer indeed. Its difficult to separate truth from rumor with these mega-clubs, but no idea what they are doing with all these comings and goings, the finances, the cast of characters.

Barca put themselves into this horrible financial situation through severe mismanagement over the years.  At least when they spent though, they had great teams.   I don't see how they are ever going to get to those levels again unless they fix their finances, and quickly.

Man United on the other hand has really no excuses for the past X years.  They are still flush with cash and still can't make things work at the level their finances says they should.

:goodposting:

The Glazers using the team as a dividend maker instead of a football club is a big reason.  Having bankers instead of football people run the football side is another.

The final touch on this goal is absurd.  Watch until the replay from the GK POV.

Also, never trust a #9.  Pew tries to Kane this goal on the line.

That was pretty.

I have watched bits and pieces of the Euro's going on right now.  Two things stand out to me:

1) The technical skills of the field players continues to improve nicely when compared to past generations

2) goalkeepers are SOOOOOOO far behind the field players it is not funny.   I don't know if they are not being developed properly or just simple physical limitations.

I've always thought that asking someone with 80% of the wingspan and 60% of the athleticism (note: all number randomly generated) to cover the same size goal is where the women's game suffers most.  Even the good ones let in goals that would be really bad in a high level men's game.

Yeah. In recent years, I've just given up reading any transfer rumors or discussion until its on the official site. It is particularly bad with Barcelona due to the waring factions trying to control the club flooding the Catalan press with fake news to make their opponents look bad.

Agreed.  There are a couple reputable sources but overall there is so much noise and so many trying to scoop something whether its true or not.

With United, everyone gets linked to them so it's hard to tell what's real.  Usually its click bait or an agent trying to drive up the price.  So frustrating.

I really want to get into following SSC Napoli (my great grandparents are from Naples) but I’m not sure when they play or what network shows their games in the states.

any advice?

2022/23 Season

Paramount+

  • Serie A
  • Champions League
  • Europa League
  • Europa Conference
  • CONCACAF Nations League
  • CONCACAF Gold Cup
  • Argentina
  • Brazil

Paramount + for their league, Seria A.  I believe they are also in the Champions League as they finished 3rd in Serie A last season.

Enjoy!

Tottenham with summer signing number 5 today.  Clement Lenglet full season loan from Barca is confirmed.  Probably not a nailed on starter, but will provide depth and rotation options at LCB and CCB.

Can't believe this is the 5th signing and it's still early July.  There have been years recently where Tottenham didn't sign 5 over 2 full windows.

Still talk of Tottenham looking for a RWB, and possibly looking at any cheap deadline deals.  Spence has been talked about there for a long time, but price hasn't quite come to agreement.

A top line LCB is also a wish, but seems a pipe dream at this point.  Davies really played well in that position after Conte came in, so maybe that is the long-term plan.

Now it's time to cut bait and sell some bad signings over recent years.  Or at least get them loaned out and (at least partially) off the payroll.

He is going to fit in well :)

@ODDSbible

The Spanish media constantly berated Gareth Bale for not speaking Spanish whilst at Real Madrid... He then moves to LAFC and one of his first interviews is of him speaking fluent Spanish.The ####housery levels are off the charts

Won't bump the matchday thread for post game comments on non-league pre-season friendlies, but got first game of the season in between Wythenshawe Town (step 5) and Altrincham (step 1), 2-2, ballache of a ground to get to, beer disturbingly not cheap, but hey, at least I saw a glorious open goal miss and it was sunny at least

Lots of crazy in MLS this weekend

Matthew Doyle

@MattDoyle76

- Damion Lowe is the first player in @MLS history to score a stoppage-time own goal in a 1-0 loss

- NYCFC first team to draw 3 PKs in a game (and they did it in a single half)

- D.C. suffers their worst loss ever (and ties the league record)

- Atlanta and Seattle suffer worst home losses ever

- Hadebe scores latest regular-season goal ever in 101st minute for Houston

Union SD Ernest Tanner thinks the LAFC recent signings are a bit fishy

Tanner isn't one to give quotes like this for free out. If he says something like this its because either he has proof of it or was told from trusted people about stuff. Tanner isn't one to cry etc, he's always blatant with his comments and straight forward. I get where he's going with this though as something is off with these deals. TAM and GAM were put in to help keep league parity but there's a ton of loopholes the bigger clubs especially LA Galaxy have taken advantage of. Seattle has been involved in some as well as Inter Miami.

Luis Suarez has received offers from multiple MLS teams.  However, the MLS playoff format is causing him to hesitate signing.  His fear is that if he picks the wrong team, and they miss the playoffs, that his season will end too early and he won't be sharp for the WC.

So United v Liverpool to open the preseason fixture list.  Liverpool used the game to check out some youngsters, United went with a pretty strong lineup.

Understanding its the first friendly, strength of the lineups and despite being vs Liverpool.....

The takeaways for me are that Sancho & Martial scored.  Regardless of the level of competition, these two scoring is important.  Good to see them start well. Fred and Pellestri rounded out the scoring for United.

Hopefully they can build on this and buy into ETH and what he wants.

Breaking: Bernadeschi has officially signed with Toronto FC. Expect an official announcement with club very SOON!

Might be time for Columbus to start their record signing :)

Tom Bogert

@tombogert

Cucho Hernandez has three goals in his first 88 MLS minutes.

@MLS_Buzz

In 2010, there were 34 professional, independent clubs in the top 3 divisions in the USA

Next year, there will be 81, plus another 25 or so MLS 2 teams

For the first time in American history, there will be more than 100 clubs competing in professional soccer every weekend

Pro/Rel can't be that far off. Maybe not in my lifetime, but it's coming.

I think we are going to see formal pro/rel in every division besides the top division within 30-35 years.

The big question remains is how do you ever convince the first division teams to participate.   Also, the almost 100% certainty of MLS and Liga MX uniting as one monster league in the future will make this even more tricky.

very cool

NEWS: Darren Eales writes in a letter to season ticket holders: “as a brand-new benefit and for the first time ever, Atlanta United will provide free tickets for members travelling to away MLS matches in 2023.”

Very few tweets cause me to feel physically ill, like this one does :(

Hello my friends, I'm back , still going strong, seven years of lies have ended. Now the game is again in the right direction. Or as Michel Platini puts it: You will hear from us again. I wish you a great weekend.

Just in time to "help out" with the 2030 World Cup host decision.

ATLANTA – Darren Eales, who has led Atlanta United since its inception, will be leaving the club to lead Newcastle United of the English Premier League as CEO beginning August 22.

Don’t know much about him so reading up now and would welcome insight from @AAABatteries and anyone else, but just going off Atlanta United fans online, my Mags seem to have hired a good one.

Great move for Eales and NU.  Most every AUFC fan will tell you that the success we've had was due to Eales and that the more recent troubles were due to Bocanegra.  I think that probably oversells Eales a little and undersells Bocanegra but I generally agree with the sentiment.

I'm nowhere near knowledgeable enough to know how this moves translates but I would expect him to do well, especially given the resources they will probably give him.

Just learned that Eales worked with our new Technical Director, Dan Ashworth, at West Brom. So we’re basically just getting the band back together.

I am drinking the kool - aid one last time.  If this is not the spot, I doubt it will ever happen in my life time

=================

* A house measure was added to a bill in Massachusetts which allows for the rezoning of parcel of land along the Mystic river in Everett to allow the building of a  “sports, recreation or events center"

* No one lives near by so no NIMBY issues.   It is the location of a soon to be decommissioned power plant as well as 45 acres already on sale right next door

* The Krafts have had this location as one of their top spots for years but never got past informal talks with the Mayor

* It is in the town of Everett which is on the border of Boston but does not have the political issues that Boston has in trying to get a deal this size completed

* There is no direct T stop for the location but there is one less than half a mile away, and a newly proposed walking bridge will make the walk safe and easy to a possible stadium.
