Erikson out until April/May.

United moving for Bayern CM Marcel Sabitzer. Don't know anything about him. Personal terms accepted, he is flying to Manchester, but still need agreement between teams .

Expected to be a loan with option to buy, not an obligation to buy. (some reports say no option to buy at all, just a loan).

Well, got two sets of 2 tickets for STL City's opening game here at home vs. Charlotte FC on March 4th through presale. That's my son's birthday to boot, who I'll be taking. Grabbed 2 more since I'm allowed a total of 4 and figured I'll find someone that wants to go pretty easily or will sell them for at least cost.

My link
Ok, could use some advice here. Trying to decide what to do with the extra 2 tickets (although I did offer the other 2 to a friend for him and his son at what I paid if they want to go), but assuming I sell these, let me know what you think.

There's no more available through STL City and SeatGeek (who they partner with). Being the opening game, it sold out crazy fast. Tickets are already being listed at StubHub for some crazy prices. I can sell 2 of these and pay for all 4 of my tickets.

I have 2 tickets in Section 226, row 4. This is at the top corner of the stadium, basically the farthest away. However, it's kind of cool with the view and the location of it (and there really aren't any bad seats in this stadium). I paid $240 total for 2 tickets. Similar tickets right now selling for $315/each.

I have 2 tickets in Section 203, row 15. Paid $360 total for 2 tickets. These are the ones I was going to keep. Similar tickets selling for $292/each.

Which view/seat do you think is best? Which would you sell and which would you keep?

The 203 appears to be a better view. Where is the supporter sections going to be? I you want better atmosphere, you want to be close to those sections.

As a soccer fan I would love to see you sell the tickets to some one who really loves the sport. The opening of a new stadium is very rare. The opening game for a new team is very rare. Combining the two is extremely rare so I would love to see them go to some one who loves the sport and not to some one who will show up 15 minutes into the game and then ask people to sit in front of him.

But I can understand the lure of making good money as well since it will be the hottest SLT City ticket you own until the team does something big in the coming years.

226 will actually be closer to the supporter section. It's also actually closer to the pitch. I'm changing my mind and leaning toward keeping those. My son just got back from school and I showed him and he was definitely drawn to those as well.

I can't guarantee where they will go, but people that will buy these off StubHub will be interested in going. But it's also why I offered it to a friend whose son played soccer with mine and is actually on a top team here and looking to play in college. With them, I'm not making anything.

I feel like this is the summer window closing with all the movement. Enzo finally to Chelsea, Navas to Forest, Jorginho to Arsenal, Cancelo to Bayern, Sabitzer to United and more

My 2 cents - I’d sell the “better” ones to fund a 2nd game!

Apparently Ziyech to PSG fell through, possibly due to Chelsea screwing up the paperwork.
Messed the paperwork up 3 times? That's worse than a fax machine "breaking" at 11:59p.

They did not want him to go.

yeah I kind of agree. That level of incompetence is hard to believe.

Then again when you look at Chelsea's squad, Ziyech, much like Pulisic, is so far down the depth chart now they really have no need for them, so destroying the transfer on purpose does not make a ton of sense.

I was kinda curious to see how he would contribute at PSG... I was thinking if he were to play at his national team level he could have been huge there.

It's something like 15 new players in since the new ownership took over? They are giving Forrest a run for their money in terms of number of players in.
And yes they were replacing Christiansen, Rudiger and now sent Jorginho out, but that is a lot of players. Even if you think title contenders need two teams. Depth is good but you also have to be able to keep them all happy.

There is some strategy behind the watering of the field, correct?

Doesn't a wetter field slow down passes and slow down an offense. Why do I see a home team only water a portion of the field at halftime?

I don't know how much leagues follow the rules, but FIFA (and as a subset UEFA) have a clear rule in the books where the field can only be watered once a certain amount of time before a game has lasped if BOTH teams agree to it.

This was highlighted in the 2012 Euros, where Spain wanted the field to be watered just before the game started and Italy did not and Italy got their way because that was the rule.

As for fast or slow, if a minimum amount of water is added to a pitch, which is what the sprinkler systems do, it can actually speed up play. It is only when a pitch gets water logged (typically only done by nature) does it slow the game down.

Wetter field makes it faster and reduces chance of injury on certain turf fields I believe. Some teams do use it tactically.

every year I say it but it has to be said again, this is insanity. These valuations are going to be a key driving force why pro/rel will continue to be a dream.

I also don't think these numbers are at all healthy. They allow too many teams to operate at a loss. I would much more prefer lower valuations and all teams running at a profit, but that's now how business's thrive these days.

TL/DR

Forbes' valuations:

1. LAFC, $1bn
2. LA Galaxy, $925m
3. Atlanta United, $850m
4. NYCFC, $800m
5. D.C. United, $700m

And charges against Mason Greenwood have been dropped. Not sure what this means for him, his career and status at United.

Just an FYI...according to the article, apparently LAFC turned an 8 million dollar profit last year on 110 million revenue. That's not counting whatever else the owners made from the stadium, etc. But yes this is why there will never be pro/rel. The better question is when do they get rid of the salary caps. There are really three reasons these teams are worth this, no pro-rel, stadium control, and the salary cap. When you have increasing revenues, stable costs, and increasing ancillary revenues; it's a panacea for owners.

I was not referring to LAFC specifically. I was just talking about MLS teams in general in terms of operating loss. The article states that 50% of the teams operate at a loss.

The Athletic did a really deep dive a couple of years ago into why the valuations continue to sky rocket

I don't ever foresee the salary cap being removed but maybe we can hope that it grows at a faster rate than we have seen in the past.

Lots and lots of positive talk about MLS on AppleTV and yet I still lean towards this not working out......I hope I am wrong

MLS Box-To-Box

@MLS_Box2Box

MLS on ESPN was like sharing a stadium w/ an NFL team. You’re there, but you aren’t really wanted. For all the criticism about the cost, watching MLS Season Pass on Apple has me feeling like a fan of a team that finally built its own stadium. MLS has a home now.

I think they're smart to get off the RSNs which are really in trouble right now. A lot of the NBA talk is about using the potential bankruptcy (as painful as it may be for them in the short term in terms of a 1-2 year decrease in the salary cap), to get to something closer to what MLS did as it allows the NBA to control it's schedule easier.

so, i’ve been in italy this week and coppa italia has been on tv, cable. the games have no announcers, just crowd noise and whistles. actually refreshing. wish the nfl did this and just left us alone.

The NFL tried this once back in 1980. They determined the massive amount of down time in an NFL game made for just too much dead time on the air even though it did raise the ratings (due to they assumed curiosity). No other American pro sports game has gone announcerless by choice ever since.

And also trimmed out 75% of the commercials and made it like a non-televised college football or high school game. Done in 90-120 minutes.

i do remember this….it’s almost like you are at the game. soccer is different i guess, there were no commercials, just 45 minutes a break and another 45 minutes.

Yeah, saw this as well. Gonna be a really tough situation for all parties. Obviously innocent until proven guilty is an important part of any civilized legal system, but given the circumstances and the statement from law enforcement....

“In this case a combination of the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that came to light meant there was no longer a realistic prospect of conviction. In these circumstances, we are under a duty to stop the case.”

everyone is going to assume what went down here. Very strong probability that the accuser just agreed to take a settlement and stop cooperating with the investigation. Hard to blame her. Better to get life changing money and just move on. Greenwood probably would have just ended up pleading to a lesser charge and would have very little to no jail time.

His reputation is shot anyway. United apparently doing an internal investigation so who the hell knows what comes of that. They'll get raked over the coals if they play him. (he's already guilty in the court of public opinion. Guessing there's a crazy portion of the fan base that will tell themselves he's innocent to get a gifted player back on the field) If they try and terminate his contract, it probably gets tied up in court for years.

Obviously talented athletes have been accused (and even convicted of) terrible crimes and still played. But with this type of charge, in 2023, gonna be tough for a world wide brand like United to be ok with taking the PR hit.

Sky used to (may still do, been a long time since we've had a subscription) have quite a few commentary/viewing options over here, including what you describe, alternate just behind the goal camera angle, focus on just one player camera, and fan v fan commentary which is as entertaining as it sounds for 30 seconds. BBC (on the rare occasions they actually have rights for a game) also usually give you the option of using their radio feed as the audio, which seems unbelievably dumb when for much of the time they're describing stuff that we can actually see, but maybe some people like it

Tickets sorted for the Wrexham replay, next round is also televised if we get through which becomes an enormous annoyance if it were to go to extra time

If we've learned anything from sports, if the talent is high enough they will deal with the PR fallout. They did bring back Ronaldo with his past allegations, Giggs is still a fan fave with his current legal troubles and history, Ole even had some issues during his days. As you said, "Gonna be a really tough situation for all parties"

Sadly, there's basically a sliding scale with talent on one axis and "how bad was it" (or maybe "how provable was it") on the other.

Greenwood is obviously a high level talent. Good enough to be an impact starter for United and good enough to play for England. But his allegations were obviously very serious and backed up by evidence (photos and a pretty damning audio recording if I remember correctly)

Ronaldo is (well, was) an all-time talent. And while the allegations were very serious, it was basically (again, if I'm remembering correctly) a he-said, she-said case that came to light years after the alleged event occurred. Its easy for a skeptic to dismiss it as someone looking for a quick payday (not saying that's what I believe. Just saying its an easy leap to take if you're a fan of Ronaldo or the club)

At the end of the day, a false (or on this case, dropped) allegation obviously shouldn't end someone's career. But given the circumstances, I think we can all make an educated guess as to why the Greenwood case is being dropped. And I wouldn't blame United (or any other club) for wanting nothing to do with him.

For any old or new MLS fans, some one put a ton of work into this google doc. Give it a click and look through it (use tabs at bottom to switch your views)

Herc laid out the LA financial timeline.

2015: MLS buys out Vergara for $70m and scrubs the Chivas franchise

2018: MLS sells rights to LAFC ownership for $110m

While it's still an crazy ROI, you have to add the $350M stadium cost into the equation too. But even with that, the team's net worth has more than doubled in 5 years. Insane.

This smells like ownership is part of the offer

Inter Miami remain in the Lionel Messi sweepstakes, it's ongoing. Nothing decided on his future yet. Miami remain confident.

Will Forbes

What MLS/Inter Miami are offering Messi would be insane to turn down. That’s all I’m going to say.

This Man City thing is going to be huge. They can't appeal this decision to CAS and line pockets like the UEFA ruling. I'm sure we're gonna see the tide of lawyers show up again and this will take a long time before any resolution is made.

However, if the charges hold up, the penalties could range from huge fines, points reduction, to expulsion from the league. I doubt they go as far as the last, but it's on the table. The points reduction thing is interesting though, because they could choose to issue points reductions for every season in which the violations happened, which means titles could be affected.

There'll be quite a few eyes on this for sure and a lot of different takes based on what biases each person has.

Has ownership injected additional capital into the team since 2018? I would almost have to think so given the Covid years.

Yes. This investigation was just for the 10 years between 2009 and 2018 though because the investigation started in 2019. They did add charges for Man City interfering/not complying with the investigation though for the past 4 years.

Man City charged by EPL with 9 years of breaking financial rules.

Could face relegation if charges are proven.

If the charges are proved it could lead to a range of sanctions including a points deduction with the ultimate sanction being expulsion from the league.
