Shouldn't have happened in this lifetime.

Sorry, but he has not been the best in all of 2022. You could maybe argue for half of 2022, but even then I disagree.
And there are several awards he has won over the years that others should have won over him, but that won't change this notable accomplishment.

Yes, great player, one of the best ever, but cmon....

oh and GET OFF MY LAWN!!!

Agree to disagree. Give the man his trophy. He bested the up and coming Messi in the WC Final.

Oh so the best of 2022 really only means the World Cup winner? No wonder Emi won best keeper.

No thanks, best of 2022 should be the whole year. Not 7 games in November.

I love stuff like this

The Sweeper

@SweeperPod

Having only turned professional in 2019 after 152 years as amateurs, Scotland's oldest club Queen's Park are on track for a 3rd promotion in a row & a Premiership spot. Intriguingly, they also have the 3rd-most Scottish Cups (10), despite last winning the competition in 1893!

International Football Association Board (Ifab) will have its general meeting this Saturday. One important item they will be discussing is how to lay out guidelines for all leagues to follow in regards of how to handle injury time. The hope is that the guidelines that were used in the WC will be then used across all leagues.

60 minute games with clock stopping is still being considered but many consider this likely too big a change to be approved by the Ifab.

Business off the field appears to be doing very well for MLS. On top of the record setting opening day attendance, I just saw this tidbit:

MLS set a new record for weekly sales on http://MLSstore.com during the 2023 @MLS Jersey Launch Week. The record sales marked a 34% increase from the same window in 2022, per @Fanatics

Giannis Antetokounmpo has become a minority owner of Nashville SC.
He (and his brothers) and Filip Forsberg added to the group that includes Derrick Henry and Reese Witherspoon.
A cool story one of the brothers told was about their father playing soccer and this is a way for them to live out their father's dream of being involved in soccer on a big stage.

This appears to be happening more and more across the league as the financial entry points for minority ownership are something the rich athletes can obtain.

Today there was a rumor that the Padres Manny Machado (who recently signed a$350 million contract) has joined the ownership group of the San Diego team that is fighting for an expansion slot.

With MLS appearing to be on a continual upwards trend I have a feeling the league won't stop expanding until they get to 36 and possibly even 40 teams eventually.

@gianmarco did you see this video? This is a well done video narrated by John Goodman, focusing on the history and homecoming of soccer in St Louis. Hype video for the first home game.

I have no connection with the area but even I got some goosebumps watching.

Will watch soon. Out doing some errands.

Weather going to be perfect tomorrow (it's awful today). Game is at 7:30, they are starting a block party down there at 4pm. I'll be getting there around 5:30pm. Can't wait!

They are so concerned with time wasting yet they won't use the laws already in place to speed up play. Or streamline VAR to be faster.
They will let a keeper fall over and lay on the ground for no reason, then get up and hold the ball for 60 seconds before booting it up field. Then they let players take a minute to throw the ball in.

I utterly and completely hate the idea of stopping the clock or changing to a shorter game clock.

Other leagues are trying to get their games in a shorter time frame while FIFA wants to extend theirs. What's next, calling time outs?

They only did 5000 tickets, but they were all free.

Crazy stat from the Copa Del Rey game on Thurs: Two key numbers tell the story. Barcelona recorded 35 per cent possession, their lowest in any fixture since 2013-14. Equally, Real Madrid failed to record a shot on target in a home game for the first time since Opta started analysing them (2010).

Pretty awesome atmosphere here right now. Can't wait!!
I have seen some of the highlights. It looks like every single person is standing that is any where on camera (not just the supporter type sections). It looks awesome on TV!!
Here's some pictures and videos

So lucky to be there. It was my son's 18th birthday yesterday and we got to experience it together. One of the top lifetime sporting moments for sure.

I like to think some where in the stands was a 7 year old kid that will some day represent the USMNT and will refer back to this game...

thanks for the pics and vids. I am happy you got to experience that with your son.

So many people just like to crap on MLS with out really knowing how fun it can be.

I just got back into reading this thread. So this might have already been discussed but what do you think of MLS season pass? Did you subscribe? Do you think some of the die hard premier league folks will buy and tune in. I bought it and really enjoying it so far. I'm following St. Louis, Minnesota, Nashville and of course OCSC real close so far. Also like putting the voo doo on Ft.Lauderdale and Atlanta.

It's the future of that baby being held up among all the beer shower celebrations for the first goal that I'm interested in

I do not subscribe but I would like to (wife will have a coronary if we get even one more streaming service). I have heard many good things about it so far.

No, I do not think the EPL fans will ever care enough about MLS to subscribe. Same with the Liga MX fans.

Orlando plays Tigres Tuesday night. Hopefully they don't embaress themselves.

I've never watched or followed MLS. In the past, I tried a few times and just couldn't get into it and thought the level of play wasn't as good as what I could watch with the EPL. With only so much time to devote, it was hard to justify spending time watching an MLS match whenever I would come across one.

Prior to these past couple weeks over the course of the last year or two, the times I've watched (mostly regarding our USMNT guys) I've come away with a much more favorable impression and thought that it would be hard to discern from a mid level EPL matchup if I had no idea who was who and they switched up kits. I mean, it's not City/Liverpool playing, but then again, that's not a realistic expectation for anything.

Having attended 3 EPL matches a few years ago (Fulham, Brighton, and Wembley when Tottenham were there), I can safely say the atmosphere last night rivaled any of those experiences. Especially for an expansion team (and pretty young), the level of play is so much better than I could have hoped for and the stadium experience was unreal. These weren't fans that had idea what was going on.

Now, I know there's some built in bias and I don't know if it's not at the same level at other MLS clubs and stadiums, but I'm officially onboard. I will try to start catching matches when I can even though it'll primarily be STL City that I pay attention to.

I think you could do much worse than giving the MLS Pass a try this year.

I subscribe to Apple TV but not the season pass. This weekend they had several games available for regular subscribers (not season pass folks), but for example the STL game was only available if you had the pass. So its kind of like the NBA - there's always a couple games on, but if you want to follow a particular team you have to pay a bit extra. For me the main issue is time commitment. I watch so much televised sports already, its hard to find the time to figure out a new league and get into it.

Alright, I promise I won't keep spamming with STL stuff, but after this weekend and getting to see and read stuff, just wanted to share one more cool video I found.

The board is dead enough anyways so I doubt anyone will get annoyed by the spamming.

What is annoying is how Charlotte FC seems to have taken a step back on the field. Still does not seem like they have figured out the roster construction. Quality attacking options but not a lot of buildup or distribution from the rest of the squad. A lot of turnover in the defense, but they made some pretty bad errors away at STL. Will be surprised if Atlanta doesn't put a couple in this Saturday.

That was my take. Lot of meaningless possession.

That said, the goal scored was top tier quality. It's too bad Copetti spent so much time on the ground with embellishing because he seems ultra dangerous otherwise.

They opened up a friendly for season ticket holders and I noticed him doing that even there. Him and Swiderski both seem to have a high level of technical skill, but spend far too much time trying to influence the officials. Having your two best players share that trait is not great...

The referee on Saturday made it clear early on that he wanted to be a part of the game and it seemed a lot of the Charlotte players couldn't keep their composure.

Better than Orlando. Seems like Oscar's plan is to park the bus and play for a nil nil draw and hope Gallese can make one miraculous save after another.

Orlando does seem a bit out of their depth in CCL this year to be honest.

I'm watching but I'm going to make sure there is nothing close enough to throw at the tv.

One thing that makes me a little hopeful for MLS is Garber admitting that while all the newer teams are flourishing, they have some serious problems in some of the big legacy markets, specifically in NE, Chicago and NY (Red Bulls).

He said they intend to focus on helping the lagging markets but I am unsure how they can be fixed.

*Red Bull has their own nice stadium, has done the superstar thing, has done the home grown thing, but nothing has captured the market there.

*Chicago has done endless harm to their own brand and moving back to play in an empty Solider field is a really bad look.

*NE is probably the one team that has a fix that can unlock the market (a downtown stadium) but that fix is near an impossibility at this point.

Columbus is one legacy market that was on fumes and it appears to be stronger than ever before now so there is hope but it is 1000 times harder to fix a market that the sport missed on 20 years ago than to introduce a new team these days into markets that are significantly more mature about soccer and less pro sports saturated.
