BREAKING: Saudi Arabian side Al-Fateh has agreed a deal to sign attacking midfielder Lucas Zelarayan from the Columbus Crew, per sources. Zelarayan, 31, had 10g/6a in 20 apps this season. Led the club to win 2020 MLS Cup, where he was named MLS Cup MVP.

=======================

The New England Revolution on Tuesday placed coach and sporting director Bruce Arena on administrative leave pending an investigation from Major League Soccer into allegations he made "insensitive and inappropriate remarks."
They should investigate whether he's ever not made insensitive remarks.
Things are going swimmingly up here.

Not only do we have the Arena faux pax, Petrovic has refused to train with the team after the Revs rejected the two offers they got for him from Nottingham and Nantes.

Anyone know anything about this guy? I hope it's fake news. I think Oscar has us on the right track.

It is not fake news from what I can tell. I think it is a disservice to Oscar as well.

Tite comes with a resume longer than most keepers arms. He has been coaching since 1990 and made it all the way to the hallowed ground of coaching the Brazilian national team for 6 years. I think most of his coaching experience has been in South America.

Maybe he's using Orlando to get his foot in the door in the US so he step into the vacant USMNT spot when GGG crashes us out in Copa América.

Miami made another interesting signing today. This time they went young and grabbed a 19 year old from the Argentine league (Racing), a player who has represented both Argentina's and Chile's U20 teams in recent years.

Well we do have a heavily influenced South American team. I just don't see how letting this get out if it is true is going to do anything but wreck this season.

What makes you think it's true?

How are they affording all these signings with the cap? Wonder if they are cheating again.

We play them tomorrow in leagues cup. I hate them more than even Atlanta. Their fans are obnoxious.

They could very well be cheating. One anonymous MLS GM said he estimates that 75% of the league is cheating in one form or another when it comes to the cap.

MLS brought this all on themselves. By making a million small incremental changes over the years to the cap, they have allowed the ability for teams to figure out ways to get around things in small ways (Miami got caught because they went above and beyond)

From what little I can tell, each signing they have made has fit into either a DP, a TAM or a U22 DP slot. Whether one believes Alba is only making $1.6m (TAM max) is where I think the cheating could be occurring.

I have seen it reported from people that usually post more than idle rumors for clicks. It may not happen of course but I think there is some smoke (ie, I think communication has occured at the very least between the parties).

I guess I should be excited if it is true but still think that would be doing Oscar dirty. I guess that kind of thing is kind of common in soccer.

I will admit I was getting a little frustrated with Oscar's coaching style the first part of the season. We kept losing home games to teams we should have beat with the talent that's on the team.

BREAKING: legendary Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon has decided to retire from professional football — it will be official in the next days Buffon, 45 years old, was playing for Parma last season. One of the best goalkeepers in history of the game will now retire.
Just saw the question on Twitter:

Is Buffon the best player to never win the Champions League?

Would be an interesting discussion between him and Zlatan for me, but cases could be made for guys like van Nistelrooy, R9 and maybe a couple others?

Did fat Ronaldo not win it at Barca?

Second game of the week disrupted, game I should be watching now off due to a waterlogged pitch. In early August. Pesky climate change

And lol at MU Homer including van nistelroy
"Van Nistelrooy is often considered one of the best strikers of all time. He has been the top scorer in three separate UEFA Champions League seasons, and is the sixth-highest goalscorer in the competition's history with 56 goals."

Ronaldo, Messi, Lewa, Benzema, Raul, RvN

Zlatan comes in at 48 and no one laughed about that. And yes, its not about goals or just the CL, but RvN was great for more than just United.

GK Nathan Bishop leaves Manchester United to join Sunderland on a permanent transfer. You might remember Bishop for his collision with Super Paul Mullin in a preseason friendly in San Diego, resulting in the Wrexham star suffering a punctured lung.

(I feel bad that he will only be remembered for that moment)

Oh sure.... Ronaldo's, messi, zlat, maradonna... Naturally any soccer expert would just lump VN in there with that lot

😆 and I actually liked the guy. Top quality player who always produced.

Favorite moment of his was vs invincibles era arsenal. Hotly contested game and arsenal were running hot under the collar. He fouled some thuggish defender, and while standing over him the prone defender still laying on the ground kicked out at him. VN instinctively, but a micro second after the fact, jumped backwards to avoid the kick out... Causing the entire arsenal team to bum rush him, seemingly claiming it was embellished. The look on VNs face during this was the pictionary definition of wtf

Had no idea. Certainly in the conversation with Zlatan and OG Ronaldo. I bet there's a bunch of others though.

Duh. Just remembered Maradona never won it.
Pele never did either.
Wonder how many CL games played by OG Ronaldo, Maradona and Pele in comparison to Buffon and Zlatan?
Pele never played in Europe.

Champions League as we know it did not start until 1992. Before that it was only the Champions Cup in which only league champs made it so significantly fewer players participated. Maradona only played in 32 Euro games.

OG Ronaldo played in 72 European games. I think most were Champions League games

Yeah I remember all that. Missing a PK and half of Arsenal jumping into him to celebrate.

Yeah he was fun to watch. I think he has some crazy stat at United that only 1 of his 95 goals came from outside the box.

Yeah I know there have been different incarnations of the top cup. Guess the question should be limited more to greats that played in the current setup?

You wouldn't? One of the best pure goal scorers ever?

Nah of course his name wouldn't come up with the likes of them. Underrated player though.

I think Zlatan and Ruud belong together, and neither are anywhere near those 3.
