Don't know if anyone watched the Community Shield today, but Arsenal equalized in the 101st minute and then went on to win.

If this keeps up, it will dramatically impact late game tactics IMO. I'm glad the FA is trying to implement this. Expect a lot more bitching like from Pep this evening going forward.
I was listening on the radio and one of the announcers was showing his Pep bias backing up Pep's complaining. Calling this a preseason game and that it was even over the announced time.
The other announcer pushed back saying this is what the FA has decided and the refs have been directed to do. Also there was even more time added for a clash of heads.

I like they are doing this.

Appears as if we may be doing the magic trick of selling our best player then, a week later, doing it again - if you can still get Luton to finish above us at better than evens do so now

Now this would break the Internet, and possibly the space-time continuum.

REPORT: MLS CONSIDERING MOVE FOR MBAPPE 🇫🇷🇺🇸 According to @DuncanCastles—with PSG talks at standstill—MLS has begun exploring possibility of bringing French star to North America on heels of successful Messi move. Move is both long- and short-term play, @Record_Sport reports.

I guess he fits the beginning financial profile since he will be a free agent next summer but the package they put together would have to be triple, if not quadruple what they came up with for Messi.

And for sponsors in the US, Messi is a far bigger name than MBappe.

This is certainly fun to think about but it seems almost impossible to me.

Unlikely of course, but this one move would leave the “retirement league” haters forever in shambles. It would be worth it just for that alone.

I guess more importantly, it gives yet another indication of how healthy the books likely are in the league. The fact that they might even take the time to investigate what they would have to know is a MASSIVE investment, is telling.

Of course I am bit old school in that I wish we could balance some of the high level spending with fixing the damn salary cap and ridiculous roster rules.

Agreed. If there's enough money for what would have to be a half billion dollar Mbappe deal, then lets stop all these stupid rules. MLS isn't struggling anymore. They have huge new stadiums that are being filled every night. I'd much rather see them move towards a better structure than do another huge deal.

As we could have guessed, this is much ado about nothing. It sounds like Garber gave some hypothetical answer to a question that included MBappe's name, as an example, and the media ran with it like he was serious.

Reddit said the comment Garber made was something like:

“If, someone like Mbappe wanted to come to MLS we could explore options to make it work”

Revs out of League Cup on PK's tonight.

That was the last chance to possibly host Miami this season but maybe it is for the best because it would be a bit embarrassing if that was the first game Messi decided to skip due to the field.

Speaking of League Cup, that starts tonight, that Wrexham v Wigan is at 8pm local makes me think it's on TV at least somewhere?
So I have an app called "Soccer TV" (by World Soccer Talk). I just added Wrexham to my favorite teams and it says this game is on ESPN +

By the way, I love the app. You can add favorite teams, leagues, qualifiers and it will tell you how to watch on TV.

Lopetegui leaves Wolves
Do they get the "new manager bounce" now? Nothing like getting a new manager 1 week before your season starts
what is the story behind this? Did he get into a fight with the front office?
Wolves pursued Lopetegui for years, then finally landed him when they were bottom of the table. Gave him 80M pounds to spend in January and he turned them around and saved their season.

Supposedly he was promised more funds(although paid for by sales) this summer, yet even though Wolves made around 70M in sales, he wasn't given a penny in transfer dollars. Their only signing has been a free transfer and Lopetegui has been pretty vocal about how pissed he is.

Seems like Wolves should've found a spare 20-30M to spend on some incomings to keep the coach they've wanted for years happy to stay around.... or maybe they're just broke and have no choice.

6 of the 8 teams in the Leagues Cup Q-final are MLS.

I know they're playing at home, but that's still really impressive. Liga Mex has no salary cap, no restrictions on player purchases, etc.

Here is their formal statement. Some of this is quite ironic considering how many times MLS teams got Concacafed while in Mexico.

============================

“From LIGA BBVA MX we want to thank the support of the fans in the Leagues Cup (LC), you are the main engine of our football and the motivation to improve the quality of the show

On and off the field.

In the same way, we deeply appreciate and recognize our 18 teams for their participation in the LC and we congratulate the Gallos de Querétaro and Rayados de Monterrey for their qualification to the Quarterfinals.

At the same time, we will be closely following their next matches, focusing on the arbitration issue and the VAR, a situation that we have already made latent before the LC Organizing Committee, prior to the start of the Round of Eighth Finals, with the aim of taking turns to Concacaf for its corresponding analysis.”

Adds a little spice! 100% chance this rotates between the two countries in the future though I'd think.

And if/when MLS gets to the point where it's dominating in Mexico, they'll just stop playing.

I saw some comments responding to various cup games about how the fix was in for an MLS team to win it.

Lets see, this is a midseason tournament for MLS, and a pre-season tournament for Liga Mx. Mexican teams sat quite a few players in regard to the surfaces and the fact that the season is still ahead of them so played mostly b teams. Every game was a home game for MLS and it's really impressive that MLS had most of the teams advance? Not sure I agree with that.
Oh and no salary cap for Liga MX? No restrictions? I guess the MLS has a hard salary cap with Messi and all. And there are quite a few teams with restrictions in the fact they cannot sign non-Mexican players - Chivas comes to mind and I am fairly sure a few other teams have similar restrictions.
eta - looks like only Chivas, but I know there is plenty of financial strife in Liga Mx as well so this is now a league of have nots for the most part - believe Quertero is about to be absorbed by the league at the least.

I've watched some of the games and they've been fun exhibitions - pretty large percentage went to pk's. Don't really think LigaMX took this competition as seriously though.

Some bits and pieces around the world
Nkunku injured right before the season starts - out at least 4 months is a major blow for Chelsea
Looks like Kane to BM is finally going through. Finally gives a good player a chance for some trophies.
Courtois may have torn his ACL today, owie.

United really being built for ETH this season so it may be put up or shut up. I like the team quite a bit and there is a lot of depth when you have the likes of Sancho, AWB, Erikson playing with your B team, but they really need guys like Antony and Garnecho to make the next step, and Varane and Casemiro to stay healthy. Don't see them on par with City or Arsenal yet but should be in the 3-4 mix and if a few things break their way who knows.

I don’t see it this way at all. I think most like the direction he’s taking the club. I think continuing to change the culture and playing style while improving the roster is still a goal for this season and offseason. Getting out of the CL group, top-4 and good showings in the two cups plus the eyeball test will be more than enough, IMO.

Onana for DDG is a massive ETH move.
Antony from Ajax and Mount were both ETH moves
He pushed hard for Rojlund as well - these are guys that press high and can move the ball quickly - this is the style that ETH wants to play for sure, get the ball from the back to the attack ASAP. Thus the reason you see guys like Erickson not playing much. Sancho is a great attacker, but not so great on the press whereas Rashford and Garnecho are.
You don't release a United legend in goal, multi time player of the year without sticking your neck on the line quite a bit. I am not an Onana fan, but I only watched him a bit while at Ajax, did not see him at Inter much last year. He is reckless at times with his confidence, hopefully that was a younger version of the player however.

Sounds like ManU are in for higher scoring games this season.

It is very difficult to extrapolate from league to league, but his teams at Ajax averaged nearly 3gpg. However, they allowed way less than 1 gpg. Obviously the Eredivise doesn't have near the depth and talent of the premier league.
But high pressing teams do offer more chances in the attack and they allow more on the counter, so you would think they would be higher scoring games. United preseason games have not shown this other than an exciting 3-2 game vs Dortmund (another high pressing team), their games have been relatively lower scoring. Of course this has a lot to do with player rotation as well.
I expect ALL premier league games to have slightly higher scoring than normal (see my championship league comments previously) but I don't necessarily think United's games will be any higher scoring than usual. Getting points is much more important than goals, and they have the talent to put the ball in lock down mode if they get a lead.

Liga MX Apertura season started before league cups. All Liga MX teams have already played 3 games I believe in the new season.

From the games I have watched, Liga MX teams played their top teams as there are Champions League spots on the line in this tournament. The only players who I saw that sat for both leagues were ones that were already injured. I did not watch all the games though.

I could be wrong about the timeframe, but I don't think it was very long ago MLS teams struggled to get results against Liga Mex teams even playing at home. Without diving deep it feels like MLS has reached ~parity with LM.

I just checked the champions league record for the past two seasons to see what recent records were between the two leagues when the MLS team is playing at home.

MLS and Liga MX teams met 8 times in an MLS stadium in a Champions League game over the past two years.

The MLS record in these games is 5-2-1 (W-D-L)

Looking at these results in recent Champions League games against the top Mexican sides seems to indicate the Leagues Cup results went about how we should expect in a home MLS stadium.

Note that MLS teams still perform poorly in Mexico. MLS can never really claim to be a stronger league than Liga MX until they start to win consistently down there IMO.

But there is no question the competition between the two leagues is significantly closer than it was say 5-10 years ago, even if Liga MX may still be slightly stronger by some views.
