Hitman was my absolute favorite.  I loved that guy.

I still cannot fathom where that power came from...especially with those chopstick legs.

The layoff sucked, but if you're going to say "5 times in 5 years", making sure to encapsulate the promotion-related hiatus, it's clear you have a bone to pick. "Four times in 17 months", and "3 times in 9 months" are also true statements.

Smith was a warm-up, and understandable given he was coming off the layoff and moving up. Brand was also a walkover. Barrera, I'd argue, is a decent LHW prospect, but was in no way ready for Ward. But who is? it's Kovalev and Ward, then a gap, then Stevenson, then a biiiiiig gap to everyone else. 

This is a dumb argument. Both dudes deserve credit for taking a tough fight.

A bone to pick?  If I had a bone to pick I would be complaining about the decision. I'm not so get out of here with me being super bias. Ward is not a very active fighter. It's just a fact.  Before the Kovalev fight, he hadnt fought anyone of real note 2013. It takes nothing away from what he did tonight. Both guys are modern boxing legends.

Exactly my point. He was a one of a kind. You aren't going to get another Hearns just like you aren't getting another Barry Sanders. 

 
Didn't see the fight but was following on Twitter. Kovelev seemed to win almost all the early rounds and added a knockdown. Ward seemed to take over midway and dominate the later rounds. Major criticism I saw was that Kovalev didn't throw his right much after round 5 or so. Can't wait to watch the replay to judge for myself.

FWIW, four of five boxing aficionados I follow had it 114-113 Ward with one having it 114-113 Kovalev. Didn't see it yet so don't know how I'd feel about that.

Torque, but it came from his back & shoulders instead of his legs. That's why he was meat when a good fighter got him in trouble - his legs couldn't hold up. It didn't happen often, because he was great himself and usually had the other dude in trouble first, but it was his downfall against both Leonard & Hagler. Hagler had tree stumps for legs, but Leonard didn't. Yet watch his fights and how Ray is always grounded. When a lot of people say "foot work" they think dancing, but Ray Leonard was almost never off-balance even when (hell - ESPECIALLY when) getting hit. Tommy Hearns was off-balance a lot, even when he was pummeling the other guy.

That said, Hearns was one of the most exciting fighters I've ever watched. Those were glory days for fight fans

 
Re-watched. Still via homer glasses, still had Ward by a point.

Just the scoring system, I think, hurt Kovalev. Ward nipped a lot of rounds, whereas Kovalev won some plainly but also completely dominated a few. Even without the KD, that second round was probably the worst of Ward's career and was a disaster for him. If judges didn't score by round, if they just picked a guy after the fight who they thought did best, it'd be hard not to give it to Krusher. You'd acknowledge that Ward tightened it up at the end, but that he didn't do enough to close the gap that SK opened up in the first half of the fight.

Also think how you score depends on how much weight you give to body work, as Ward plainly hit Kovalev far more downstairs, and Kovalev hit Ward in the head far more. Same for ring generalship, which, for me, doesn't count for a whole lot. Landing shots does. If you're in pursuit and you're tagging a guy, that's good. If you're in pursuit, whiffing, and getting countered, you're losing. Hatton was coming forward too when Mayweather wiped him out. 

 
If we already have Thurman/Garcia booked for 2017, Kovalev/Ward II very likely, and Canelo/GGG maybe/probably supposed to happen, along with maybe/probably Pac/Crawford, that has the makings of possibly, dare I say it, a pretty good year.

Paq/Mayweather II is more likely that Paq/Crawford.

The Kov/Ward fight was very close, depends on what style you prefer.  That being said, the fight was not a " robbery " as some have said.  Close, yes; robbery, no.

While the fight was good, the undercard was dreadful. Sadly, on the undercard the best fight was the non-PPV women's fight, which had good action throughout.  

Rumblings had this PPV doing 200,000 or less.

 
I wouldnt expect big PPV numbers as Kovalev is not a draw to most of the public, esp in USA, and Ward's starpower was probably actually higher 5 years ago. They may have been smarter making this an HBO fight, and since pretty much everyone expected a good fight, make the rematch(es) PPV's, but the likely rematch will be PPV anyhow so not sure about the math on that one.

Good.  This rematch needs to happen quickly for peak interest levels.

Dunno much about Aussie boxing, but Mundine/Green II is a big deal Down Under. Given that Mundine has to go up 30 lbs. from his last fight, has been inactive for 15 months, and wasn't terribly impressive before then, does Green -190 to win make sense?

 
first time ive seen the ward / kov fight.....ward is lucky kov only landed a short palm punch in the 2nd ...if that was a little longer range and full knuckle impact that fight would have been over ..period

i gave the 7th rd to ward ...the first hes won in this fight...and that was still a close rd...kov just seems to be in control ...ward is trying to step it up

ward backed up `the entire fight...he was knocked down...it never seemed like he could hurt Kov but it did seem like kov could hurt ward at any moment...while kov seened to waver a bit in the later rds he regained some control at the end ...i felt like he won that fight easy

I agree on everything except the backing up part, I don't think backing up is always a bad sign/approach. It's a great way for counter punchers to work.

and i agree on counter punchers ..but at some point you need to dig in and land some aggressive shots ...even sugar ray did that against hagler ..danced all night but at times he would stop and throw 10 punch combinations ...then move away ...i didnt see ward moving backwards as a planned tactic ...seemed more out of being physically dominated by a stronger fighter...i think wards inactivity was his downfall ...i see him winning a rematch if they fight soon
