very true.  I couldn't find 7 rounds for Canelo, but I'm giving the benefit of the doubt to Canelo on any semi close round.

I was big on GGG so don't want to think so bias.  So if someone had Canelo 7-5...ok.  10-2, ridiculous.

Interesting that all 3 judges gave Canelo rounds 10-12.  They were close rounds, just surprising none of them gave GGG one of those rounds.  

 
Initiating exchanges and backing up the other fighter should count for a lot more among judges.  I always give close rounds to the guy who is stalking.  Not the counter-puncher.  I think it's appropriate and would make for more exciting fights if this was ingrained in the scoring.

You can't back up the entire fight and land less punches in a close fight and win 11 of 12 rounds.

I did not score it but I saw it very close. GGG landed more but Canelo was sharper, especially counters. 

 
Love how in the post-fight presser the guy who's in control of the judges said the one judge just had a bad night.  LOL.

Give props to Oscar, he basically admits the judge was a joke.  Have always liked him, good dude.

Alvarez had a guaranteed rematch if he lost - so it wasn't about that

Looking forward to the rematch.  Just sucks some moronic judge stole the show.  If she scored it 115-113 Canelo nobody would be complaining.  That judge was just an idiot making boxing look bad.

 
Great fight.

I had it the way Lederman scored the fight (even though I had a friendly wager on Canelo). I could see round rounds 4/5 being toss up rounds (I scored GGG) to get to a 114 tie. However, the 118-110 score is ridiculous.

He's trying to maintain some semblance of credibility. Ultimately, not a terrible night for his guy. He rallied at the end there and showed a lot of heart. He didn't get starched, even better, he didn't technically lose. But, c'mon. He's part of Canelo's advantage.

For sure.  Canelo is viewed as the golden goose for boxing and I'm sure Oscar (as his promotor) wants to tip the scales for him...just not as gross as what the one judge did.

He has a bigger following in terms of raw numbers, sure, and his potential fanbase is enormous.  But he hasn't done himself any favors the last couple years. And there are a lot of Mexicans and Mexican-Americans who don't respect him, or think he's been carried by Televisa coming up, and protected by Golden Boy since he's been in the US. 

This fight also isn't going to help. I grew up with a couple of Mexican-American dudes from my neighborhood, both follow boxing, both are pretty grossed out by tonight.

Reminds me of when Sweat Pea was the Champion...Golden Boy was the challenger.  Sweat Pea lost on the cards...even though landing 120 more punches than DLH.  Straight theft!


A DRAW tonight was fine...although I had it GGG by a slim margin (115-113)...however that one card has left yet another stain upon boxing's legacy.

Let's get on with the rematch...Cinco de Mayo?  Canelo is going to have to do something different than getting on his bike for the remaining 1:30 of each round.  Stand toe to toe for just one round...give us something to want to give it to you.

This is nothing like Mayweather and his counterpunching style...least Mayweather hit you with more punches overall while countering and backing up.
 

You can't back up and counter all fight AND hit your opponent fewer times than he hits you and expect to win...on the cards or in our hearts.

 
You can back up/counter and win rounds.  But when rounds are close they should go to the aggressor.  

Also if that just becomes the standard fighters will be more aggressive.  Better fights.

He's never gonna be a Chavez or Duran, but he still has a huge following in Mexico and the USA.  He's the biggest draw for boxing at the moment.

No one said you can't win backing up and countering.  Remember...I'm a Mayweather fan.

You have to be effective and hit the opponent more.

Can't just rely on some power punches that have no effect whatsoever on the opponent.

You've got to land more than the aggressor or knock him out to win countering and backing up.

Uh Oh...that smells an awful lot like, "I'm going to move on to bigger and better things".

We might see DLH take his golden goose to other pastures before fans force him to come back to this one.

I'm still flabbergasted he had the stones to setup Canelo/Chavez Jr before this GGG fight.

But people buy it...they still pay for that nonsense.

It's going to take the fans just turning their backs and not pay for PPV's no one really wants...just because it's the only way to see him fight.

I don't mind a defensive fighter / counter-puncher on my scorecard, but he has to land.  Canelo wasn't landing consistent power punches, any time he did GGG came back with a jab or a cross to even it up.  Not to make too big a deal of the Mayweather/McGregor fight but it was an example of the opposite.....Conor was the aggressor for most of the fight, Floyd sat back, let him get in close and push, and then land some clean shots to take the rounds.

Golden Boy definitely learned from one of the best at this shady nonsense, Bob Arum.

 
Byrd is the worst judge (and has been) for years. How the #### she continues to get championship fights is criminal. She is doing her part to ride boxing into the dirt. I had it 116-112and have a real hard time seeing it close than that. 118-110 Canelo is criminal.

agreed.  Let Canelo fight Danny Jacobs.  i think he loses that one too.  I dont think GGG should give him the rematch.  And if he does, it should be outside Vegas(in NYC maybe?)  Problem is, if he will rematch it needs to be soon because he is declining.  But still GGG was dominant in there last night.  Canelo looked great but had no answer for GGG walking through his best punches and jabbing him to death.

 
People are complaining about the chick's scorecard but the major travesty was the other dude's.  118-110 is dumb, but 114-114 caused the draw.

I agree. Also had 116-112. Fight was close but not that close. I can't see anyone objectively giving Canelo a decision here. A draw is a joke.

I didn't watch the fight, but just read the commentary on here. By all counts, sounds like a great, potentially close fight. Given that, scoring it a draw isn't "the major travesty" here. 

Looking forward to setting this one on replay.

It's not the 118-110 scorecard that caused the draw.  Who cares if Canelo got 118 points on one card?  He doesn't get the carry the extra points over to another one.  Would people be besides themselves if that card was 115-113?  No, why?  Because it was close?  The outcome would have been exactly the same - a draw.  The judge that had the 114-114 card knew he was delivering a draw on the match.  The draw is the problem.

Nobody is complaining about the draw. 

Nobody saw it possible for GGG to not win at least 4or 5 rounds.
