Official US Women's soccer thread: ***Update- BBC article on coach Hayes (2 Viewers)

The Spanish had no idea how to close put that 1-0 game. They were totally lost after they scored the penalty. They can move the ball through the middle make great turns and control space. But lord if they could do any of that when they weren't pouring on the gas.

Why the hell did the Dutch defender allow her to go to her left? She hasn't used her right foot once....
#18 looked like a totally different player on the left vs the right. And it must be nice to bring on the reigning Balon d'or winner in extra time... she had one nice dribble where you can see the talent. Favorite Spanish player is Jenny though. Ball looked stuck to her foot in ways that Sophia Smith could only dream.

Nice knowing you group E.
From tonight's game, you could really see the technical skill difference between Spain and the US. It still feels like the US has better athletes but Spain has 2 or 3 players that have skills and vision that no one on the US has in their tool bag.
Also the play from the goalie was special too. Not sure if she's a shot stopper, but damn if she isn't cool on the ball or okay playing 40 yards from her line.

Had the same thought last night. It was obvious in the moment, real time.

The defender not only allowed her to go left, she actually forced her left, protecting the middle where she not only had help but also would have put the Spanish player on her weaker foot. The defender is going to feel bad if she watches this on film.

Yep. Just watched again — crazy that she actually had help to the middle and botched it that badly.

The only thing I can think of is that the modern game is so loaded with inverted wingers that the defender may have been taught to always force to the side which is many times the attackers weaker foot. She may have forgot or not noticed that this particular attacker switched wings late in the game and was actually on the side of her strong foot.

I don’t know. I guess, but that’s a big mistake. Basketball is played at a really fast pace, and it’s hard to miss when the best player on the team (or one of) has the ball and which side/hand they favor. Nobody would have steered Kenny Anderson to use his left hand on a fast break back in the day.

I didn't see it... but sounds like the equivalent of a defender pushing Messi to his left.

thanks.

looks to me like she felt she was last man back... so just kept backing up to gain some time for those other defenders to get back to support- and lost her sense of where she was on the field. because that's just poor- whether the attacker is a lefty or not... but especially with that player's ability on her left. (eta: she gave the attacker SO much room... just goofy).

It looked terrible live (and on replay) but I get that her natural instinct is to move the attacker wide in that situation. Just comical however how that little feint seemed to clear the defender out and suddenly the Spanish attacker was directly in front of goal.

Tiniest of feints.

And tbh, when I was reading your guys posts about this, I envisioned all of this happening wider, with a tighter shooting angle. It was basically dead center of the goal box.

Nice placement on the goal by COL. Goalie should have done better tho. Speaking of goalies doing better... that bobble by the COL goalie was terrible. Bad play, worse timing. Just deflating going into the half like that.

ENG is the better team but COL has plenty of fight in them.

Colombia is fun. They got that random energy where they will sorta stagger around and then make a huge play totally out of the blue. Chaos team I like it.

Yeah, I'd call them "fierce" and "frenzied". Fun to watch as a neutral although I was pulling hard for ENG to lose. Can't be fun to watch them as a true fan though. Maddening.

Did they say what happened to the COL goalie? Her backup wasn't called upon to do much and in that respect COL was lucky cuz she looked shaky. Opposite as the Spain #1 who loved the ball at her feet.

And yeah Colombia would be maddening as a fan. I liked that they seemed inclined to turn the ball up right away on a steal instead of the usual knock it back to the goalie and reset.

This is a great piece of trivia I just saw.

Colombia's young starlet is Linda Caicedo. She has all the look of a future world player of the year in a few years.

She played in the U17 WC and scored.
She played in the U20 WC and scored
She played in the WWC and scored

She managed to do this all with in the last year...................I would hazard to guess no one has ever done that before in a single year period, male or female.

Any Colombian field player that is under 30 and not on a European club team is gonna get a contract I bet. It wouldn't surprise me if Real and other la liga sides start recruiting heavily there. Could Colombia women be the first real CONMEBOL power in women's soccer?

With Brazil and Argentina still slow to put any backing into the women's game, it does appear Colombia has a chance to be on the front foot the next few years.

Love watching the women’s game. Less drama and rolling around and overall sheeitassery. When you get two good teams playing it’s just beautiful to watch.
