***OFFICIAL*** Washington Commanders Thread (1 Viewer)

Adam Schefter reporting that the commanders new quarterback is Carson Wentz. 2x 3rd round pics, and the commanders are going to eat his entire contract.

this sounds spectacularly terrible.
Imagine announcing that your team has traded for Carson Wentz, the day after Russell Wilson gets traded and two days after Rodgers announcing he's staying in Green Bay.

With that said I'm a bigger Wentz fan than most and I think the Colts are making a mistake here. Be careful what you wish for because you just may end up with Mitch Trubisky.

I'm just praying its conditional, like, he has to reach milestones in yards, TDs, games played...because if we just gave up two 3rd round pics for this piece of dung QB..... :wall:

If Terry McLaurin is smart he'll bail as soon as his contract is up. Why would anyone want to come play WR with this bum as their QB??

A lot of times the early reports are missing trade details. For example, it's possible we are getting some picks in return.

I am beyond pissed. We have PLENTY of tape to show this guy isn't a winner. The reports were out there about a bad leader. And his play on the field is at BEST, game manager. I'd rather have Taylor back as our QB and those 3rds. :wall:

Feels like a bad move for Washington.  You've got good young pieces, Wentz isn't the guy to take you to a superbowl.  This feels like a panic response to Rodgers/Wilson.

true, but just to shed that contract I think the Colts are smart. They could bring in whatever QB for 2021 & if they stink, 2023 is a great QB draft class. Colts are loaded with young talent.

i like the move for the Colts. And like you, I feel like Wentz could be salvaged. I’m less convinced of that now than I was before he went to the Colts. They had a good OL, excellent receiving weapons, an elite run game and defense & their biggest issue was QB.

I don't hate the move. As bad as Wentz could be, what were Washington's options.

The one big caveat: Both teams didn't want him because of off-the-field attitude, it seems. Like the Colts needed to talk to Carson repeatedly.

Sounds like sort of a loser, all things considered.

So maybe not that great a move. But not awful if you're like me and roster McLaurin in dynasty. Heinicke couldn't get him the ball. At all. They just played nine in the box against that noodle arm.

This opens things up at least a bit. There's at least a threat.

Holy crap we get back a 2nd pick THIS Year!! SO MUCH better. And we can cut him after 1 year as his contract has no guaranteed money after this year. That makes this MUCH better...

yikes. even worse. Still shocked that WAS didn't get Indy to pay the roster bonus to get him out of town

@AdamSchefter: Trade terms, per sources…

Colts get:

🏈2022 third-round pick

🏈2023 third-round pick that can become a second if Carson Wentz plays 70 percent of plays.

🏈2022 second-round pick

Commanders get:

🏈QB Carson Wentz

🏈2022 second-round pick.

Colts are built to win now and the rest of the AFC is getting better and better. They're not bad enough to get into great position to take a top QB in next year's draft, and given their roster I don't think their GM sees tanking as a legit option - how many seasons can they wait?

What are their choices now? It's basically different versions of Carson Wentz in Mitchell Trubisky, Jimmy G or Ryan Fitzmagic.

So why should we move back in the 2nd round this year??? We are eating his contract, who signed off on this POS trade?!!?

Just read this about his contract:

Wentz has three years remaining on his contract

When Wentz signed his deal he still had two years remaining on his original deal. That means that his contract would run through the 2024 season. Therefore, as we enter the 2022 NFL season, Wentz’s contract has another three years left to run.

However, with the contract now having been traded twice, there is currently no prorated bonus money remaining. Therefore, the contract is in essence a one-year deal with two club options worth $26.2 million and $27.2 million.

So Washington can dump him after he sucks in 2022, while also giving up a 2nd round pick next year assuming he plays 70% of the snaps AND our 3rd this year PLUS moving back 5 spots in the 2nd this year. AWFUL trade for Washington.

Still a terrible deal but if wentz can play well enough to use the entire playbook and continue to develop the offense until we get a permanent qb then it is what it is.

we still should be drafting a qb this year.

Heinecke has the size and arm strength of a high school QB.
Yea i like heineke but he can’t run the full offense and isn’t a starter.  We need someone who can at least run it ok.  Wentz actually played ok last year.  It’s just an outrageous price for a one year deal which is what i think this likely will be.

Commanders get a steal at QB if only 3rd round picks are involved, OK a 2nd, big deal.

Wentz and Wilson both have a Super Bowl ring on their finger and Wentz cost a fraction of what Denver paid and they didn't empty out all their future draft picks.

Wentz was an MVP candidate in 2017 before he tore his ACL.

Washington will be competing for the NFC East this year, good job Snyder pulling a rabbit out of his headdress.

What on earth are you talking about? It cost you a third and five spots for a second. Then you can dump him if it doesn't work out. Most teams would dream of a franchise-friendly deal like that.

Its only a 1 year band-aid if he shows what he's always shown. And i don't think moving back in the 2nd this year, giving up a 3rd this year, and likely a 2nd next year is worth a 1 year stop gap. Plus Washington has done VERY well with its 3rd round picks. I think its too much a price to pay unless he somehow resurrects his career and I have my doubts.

You're putting way too much faith in the ability to find players in the third round. The second is one thing, but you only lose five spots. Is he your franchise QB you hoped for? No. But he's better than what you had, for sure.

First part, for sure..but I'm not sure how much better he is than Taylor H. I guess we'll know next year. But just doesn't feel good to acquire a guy who's been dumped twice and lost his locker room last year.

The latter part concerns me most. I've watched both he and Taylor Heinicke. Wentz threatens the other team vertically, something sorely lacking in Heinicke's game.

Fill in the blank with a number for me: Carson Wentz is the ____th best QB in the NFL.
Allen, Burrow, Mahomes, Herbert, 5th?  No....

Rodgers, Stafford, Ryan, Lamar Jackson, Dak...10th? No....

is he better than Tannehill and Trevor?

I'll say 14th but mostly because so many teams are waiting to see what their recently drafted guys do.

He's not Top 10

Ok, watch them win less/pay more with Wentz.  :lmao:
They probably won't win less. Heinicke really stuck out by the end of last year. Teams schemed for his arm strength. Nobody could get open within five-ten yards. Trust a McLaurin fantasy investor. When at first he was open, the ball wouldn't get there. Then, teams saw that, so they just pressed at the line, put eight in the box, and then the guys couldn't even get open, never mind have a good ball delivered. It affected so much, his arm strength.

I'm not a Washington fan so it doesn't really matter to me. If I was, I would surely rather my team roll the dice on a former MVP candidate rather than settle for another year of Heinecke's mediocrity, at best - he looked overwhelmed and overmatched in every game I saw him play. I know Wentz can make some bonehead plays but he also has a much better skillset in every conceivable way in comparison to Heineicke.

Last season Wentz was:

Top 10 tds

Top 10 qbr

Top 10 int%

for what it’s worth.
Odd that two teams have now bailed on him then...

Seems like there are certainly behind the scenes issues with leadership.  But, he's still got potential. He can throw a very good ball.  His issues are all between his ears. Can that be fixed?  It's concerning that Reich gave up on him. But for two 3rd round picks it's probably worth the gamble. realistically, at mid season if you aren't happy you bench him.

Not a huge Wentz fan but seems like Washington didn't give much up at all for him, so not a huge disaster if it doesn't pan out, and could work out nicely if he gives them above average play.
