***OFFICIAL*** Washington Commanders Thread (1 Viewer)

As soon as the probability of selling the team was announced last November, sales for suites picked up drastically. :pickle:

“This is an historic franchise with a 90-year history of people that love this team and we’ve already seen some of that business momentum come back,” Wright said. He added that, once the “sale process was announced last November, we sold what we would normally sell in a full season in annual suites, we made that in a week.
Their suites have been awful. Last time I was in one there was a chaffing dish filled with grey burgers. Looked like they stole it from a local elementary school.

Contrasted w/ the suites at Caps/Wiz games... holy heck, those are infinitely better.

Maybe the new ownership group will address this? It's a simple fix. Stop serving everyone the absolute cheapest crap you can find while marking it up to uber expensive levels.

Apparently a rebranding is in the cards for 2024. Good, Commanders isn't a very good name IMO.

It would be a real head scratcher to me if they don’t rebrand and if I’m being a little dramatic would make me question the intelligence of the new regime.

They need to fumigate the franchise and the easiest, lowest hanging fruit to curry favor with whatever base is left is to get a new name, imagery, and uniform redesign. They are stuck at FedEx for 5 years and there’s only so much they can do to improve that dump in the meanwhile, so that only leaves a brand makeover.

They only got one shot at this so they need to take their time and get it right. I’m expecting by the start of 2024 we will be called something else. And they need to *actually* involve the fans with focus groups and polls and whatnot. I say*actually* because they claimed to do this last time but it was a total farce.

Oh, and Jason Wright needs to be sent packing after this season and regardless of whether that happens or not, he needs to be light years away from the rebrand project. I’m sure he’s a fine dude and he was totally handcuffed previously, but he’s got too much stench on him to remain.

2024-2025 in a nutshell .... Rebrand. Promote EB to HC. Hire a new President and GM no matter what happens on the field. The only thing that changes in this is Ron getting deep into the playoffs. Which could happen. They will be better.

My guess is this stadium is staying right where it is for a long while. Which is sad because anything in PG county blows for no reason other than it is PG county. It is simply a financial reality. Hopefully some upgrades are made to make it a worthy game day experience. The entire experience is awful. Suites, food, parking, service, boring stadium, views ... everything. Parking being #1. 2 hours to get out of a stadium when it's 90% empty is a joke. They got every Marlboro MD used car salesman in there taking $20s for parking and not one of them gives a rats *** about anything

Saw they signed Quan Martin today and I said out loud, “who?”. He was their 2nd round pick. This is how detached with the team I’ve become.

Time to change that now.

I think the #1 thing they need to do with the name is keep as much of the legacy as possible. The pomp and circumstance of chief zee, the fight song, the band, Hogs etc was a perfect counter to the Cowboys and ego driven PHI/NYG people. I don't know what that name should be. We aren't naming it the Anacostians or Piscataways after the people that lived around here. Those don't exactly roll off the tongue. And frankly since the name was forced to change I'm not into keeping the native american part of the legacy, so chief zee is probably done. One would think Red should be in the name so the fight song can stick around though. I miss hearing that song, mostly cause we never score.

I’m a RedWolves guy. I do not like any of the Hog themes, think it sounds bad.

Part of me wants them to go to a red, white, and blue theme and completely start over. Let the past be the past. Nothing will ever be close to as cool as Redskins and the very handsome logo were so just let it all go and start fresh.

I really don’t know though and I’ll root for whatever they come up with. I just don’t want anything Snyder chose to be the name.

I liked RedHawks. But was also fine wit the WFT and only the numbers on the helmets. Like you though ... i wanna wash Danny off everything Washington. Having spent many years around the military, it shouldn't be a military name. They are boring ... commanders, admiral, generals ... ughh zzzz.

Agree 100%. I still want the Redskins, but Red Wolves sounds great too. Only one place to go now that Dan's gone. UP!!!

If you’re not gonna shock the world and change it back to the Redskins, but you want to keep it traditional, my vote is the Red Hogs. Make the logo a mean razorback looking monster. Numbers on the helmets.

3rd option (giggity, giggity) is to totally change the entire color scheme and go a different direction entirely.

Was hoping they'd essentially take the existing redskins logo with the feather, keep the feather, and simply insert a RedHawk (or RedTail or RedWolf or whatever) into the circle. The tribes already sent them something usable back in like 2018, but without the feather. Whatever ... it seems like a simple solution. Hawks, Wolves, Tails, etc all harken back to a pristine land 300 years ago.

I'm sure this was all possible but Danny didn't want to pay for the trademark/copyright. Josh - Give whoever a million and lets move on.

Alrighty Commanders fans. Pre-season is almost upon us. Now that the devil has been kicked out ... what are we looking at prognostics wise.

  • Offense - I expect this group to be leaps and bounds better than in years. I wanted them to draft a QB, but I think they will be fine with Howell and Brissett. I like that Howell is mobile and has an arm. Two traits we haven't had in a QB in a long time. And I like that they are under a new OC. RB seems fine. Kinda glad McKissock is gone. Seemed like one of Ron's guys that was held onto with no valid reason. WR is a good group. TE is a glaring issue. I imagine EB will have ways around this or they would have drafted one. OL is hopefuly a touch better.
  • Defense - Feels like it's time for this group to come together. New players on the backend will help. Tackling likely an issue with almost no quality LBs on the roster.
We were 8-8-1 last year with awful QB play, awful OL play, boring offense, and a D that couldn't stop certain things.

This year I see 10-7. Not sure that makes the playoffs.

Pre-season will show a lot. They need to play these offensive guys a good number of plays because they need to win Games 1 & 2 of regular season. Can't come out flat. If they do I hope Ron gets the ax and EB is HC by mid-season.

I don't see 10-7 in the cards for you fellas. That seems like wishful thinking when you're calling either Sam Howell or Jacoby Brissett your quarterback. You were 8-8-1 with one of the easiest schedules in the league (The NFC East had a ridiculously easy schedule). I don't see much improvement coming. 7-10.

that's definitely the national stance. And Vegas' . it's wrong though:-). Both Howell and Brissett are better than Heinicke or modern Wentz. And Bienemy is likely far better than Turner as an OC. Whether that results in more points scored and wins is an unknown. Pretty sure DAL and NYG outplayed their actual talent levels. I expect them to both drop. Anyway, I put $1K on them making the playoffs with some good odds. Money where my mouth is.

I can definitely see Washington leap-frog the Giants this season. Those divisional games could determine who gets that last wildcard spot.

The schedule is too difficult for 10-7. We will be a better, more well rounded team than last year but will be a tall order to improve on the record. Somewhere between 7 and 9 wins is the most likely outcome and will come down to a handful of plays.

Then we all hold onto our collective butts as the most important off-season in the last 25 years begins. I’d certainly rather not hire the wrong GM/HC and waste another 4 years.

How is Ridgeway doing?

I was livid with my Cowboys were getting rid of him last year. We’ve been chasing after defensive tackles for years, I liked Ridgway, and then we just dumped him.

I’m just curious/being a glutton for punishment.

Some rumblings on ESPN that some players approached Rivera to address Bienemy’s intensity.

Anyone know who those players are?

I’m thinking they might have doghoused themselves, and/or are just weak, and/or I might not want them on my teams.

My $$ would be on Antonio Gibson based on nothing more than a gut feeling. MF seems soft.

Found this.

If you’re right about Gibson, he also might have turned a corner and bought in properly if I’m reading this right.

The whole team has a Kindergarten Cop feel to it. EB is probably beside himself at the way things have been operating previously. This whole story is amateur hour crap and it’s about time someone acted like things matter and have consequences around here.

Thought the offense looked decent. Both Howell and Brissett are improvements from last year. The OL is a sieve but that's how Rivera operates. He's never tried to fix it and doesn't seem to care about it. Likely will end up needing both QBs over the year because of this.

I think the D is overrated not due to lack of talent, but due to lack of coaching creativity. It's a line up and go D that will bend but not break. Too safe for my liking. Glad Chase Young played 1-2 snaps before getting hurt. This dude is softer than Charmin.

I've been s Skins fan since Sonny was throwing to Charley, been through misery and glory and misery again with them. Dan Snyder is younger than me, but I have 2 sons who are Redskin fans, and a 17-year-old grandson who's a fanatical Redskin fan. I will probably die before Snyder, but my kids and grandkids will outlive that mother ####### piece of #### worm and that's good enough for me. I won't see good Skins teams again, but those coming after me will.

Love and hate are deep emotions. Very ####### deep.

HTTR
Hey, I outlived Snyder's ownership!
That grandson's now 21 now, so it only took 4 years for my Snyder hate to make a difference.

Where do I apply to get the title of the official biggest Washington FF Homer on the planet?

So I finished my last draft last night. I'm in 13 dynasty leagues and 6 redraft leagues. Here are my shares of our boys:

Howell 11
B-Robinson 11
Gibson 10
Terry 10
Doston 11
Turner 13
Samuel 6
Rodriguez 8
Dyami 5
Washington Defense 7
Sly 4

I haven't been this excited about our franchise since Gibbs return. I don't know how many wins we will have this year, but I feel like for the first time in forever, we will have a LEGITIMATE NFL offense (to go with our legit defense) and I expect that to pay dividends on my fantasy teams. If I'm wrong...:scared:

the conspiracy theorist in me says the commanders going deep in the playoffs as the Anti danny snyder door hitting him on the way out - look at your former team danny, they're in the NFC championship game just months after you were forced to sell.

If I'm the Commanders I'm calling the Jets and offering up Jacoby Brissett for some o line or linebacker help from the Jets. Jake Fromm showed enough in the preseason that he could be a competent backup for Howell.

Well, Chase Young is playing Sunday, so the defense will surely be dominant for the 8-12 plays before he gets hurt again.

Posted in the game thread, but to me Ron and Del Rio have f'ed this team almost as much as Snyder the last 4 years. Ron's lack of care about an OL, and their combined failure to have any adequate LBs, makes:

1) any QB ... Smith, Fitzpatrick, Wentz, Howell ... a sitting duck. No QB can survive when a 4 man rush can beat a 5 OL, TE, and a RB blocking set to get to the QB. How does the RT leave Brian Robinson all alone blocking a DE while he blocks nobody. WTF

2) the DL is meaningless because nobody is there to fill the running gaps. 4 guys aren't gonna stop a run when 7 guys are blocking for it. So the lightweight SS and slot CB have to make a play they can't. Also Chase Young sucks. He refuses to stay in his lane.

It's poor roster construction and it's been a staple of Ron's tenure. I thought Ron would last until the bye week. Frankly I'd be fine if he was gone tomorrow. There is so much wasted skill talent on this team because of 1 and 2.

agree.

Not penciling this team in for the playoffs, but the addition of Howell and Bienemy does look promising. Yes, yes, Howell holds the ball too long sometimes, but for a guy with only three career starts, he doesn't look bad at all. Arm talent, mobility, calm demeanor -- he checks a lot of boxes.

Bienemy -- what an improvement over Scott Turner. I imagine Rivera will still get fired post season because I do not expect the deep playoff run it would probably require. But if he continues to do well, it would great to retain Bienemy somehow...though not sure how that would work. And all these thoughts are premature anyway, after we've barely beat two bottom tier teams...

Back to Howell: I remember a few years ago we got roasted on draft day by the Internet for passing on Olave and trading down for Dotson and picks. But looking back at that trade now, we pick up: Dotson, Brian Robinson, Cole Turner, and Sam Howell -- that is an eye popping haul for Chris Olave. I slam Rivera a lot based on head scratching personnel moves but this one may just work out.

I like what i see from Howell. We will see how a full season goes but there is promise there and we haven’t had that in a long time.

The defense in theory should keep us in games but man they need to tighten things up. They seemed to in the second half but needs to be consistent. And need better play from chase.

Still think we are an 8-9 win team but who knows.

Amazing win, but now the real schedule comes. I put a lot of $s on this team to make the playoffs, and I think they have a chance. Ron is so frustrating and given he's 2-0 maybe I'm living in the past judging him. I just don't think this team brings it in the moment. They start off slow. They lose big games. They've beaten two bad teams by a total of 5 points. They seem to me the emblem of an 8-8 team over and over and over. Which is sad because I think the skill positions are there. The OL being ignored has me so frustrated and does again. And QB was too ... Ron simply lucked into Howell. i mean they didn't take him in any of the first 4 rounds so that tells you what they really thought of him. He was the defacto QB available to them when the 5th round rolled around.

I really hope EB gets a chance to coach this team. Move Ron to the front office, let EB coach, and hire a better personnel man.

Other teams passed on Howell too in earlier rounds. Teams passed on Purdy as well making him Mr. Irrelevant. Tom Brady was taken in the 6th round. None of the teams that took any of those QBs knew how much potential those guys really had, but they felt they had enough potential to where they were a "maybe" they could work out. The positive is they did take a chance on them, and when opportunity knocked, they all showed something worth giving them another opportunity. It's always nice to see an underdog take advantage of an opportunity and succeed.

Agree. I just don't think Rivera should get credit anymore than Bellichek should get credit for Brady or Shanny for Purdy. When you take a QB in round 3-7, the team didn't think they were a difference maker. It's not a hey we can maybe get this guy in round 5+ shark move. you don't do that with the most important position in sports. If they thought Purdy was gonna be an NFL starter he would have been drafted by that same team no later than round 2. Same with Howell. WAS drafted Percy Butler in round 4. So they thought Howell was worth less than Percy Butler and his 1 tackle per game.

Why are some of you so disappointed with Chase? I thought he played pretty well. I know he had the two penalties and there was the one replay they showed where he took himself out of the play by rushing too far upfield and let Russ scramble. But, I also remember some strong plays against the run and he was in Russ' face several times, including 1.5 sacks.

I agree on Howell. I like what I see, overall. I agree with those saying that he can hold the ball too long. The OL is bad, but they shouldn't get the blame for all the hits on Howell. It's actually pretty amazing that he has the willingness to hold the ball that long given what the OL is like. He doesn't seem to panic or abandon the game plan just because he's taken some hits.

Not surprising:
Slow starts in each game (they've done this consistently under Rivera)
Stupid clock management and playcalling with a lead while trying to run out the clock.
Bad offensive line play until sometime in the second half
Payne's very good player

Surprising:
Howell's ability to escape when surrounded, to not panic, and to throw right on the money at critical times
Chase Young's awareness level during plays. He used to be easy for opponents to take out of a play; now he recognizes during some plays and adjusts.
Bienemy not panicking with playcalling when down 3 scores.
Robinson's a heck of an RB.

This is an interesting team, rooting for y'all to win the division.

I think in terms of environment for a young QB, Howell is in a quietly kinda awesome spot. Good WR, really good defense, OC who kind of took over same time as he did. With that WR core, and that defense, I think we might see some blowouts by the Commies here soon.

I really hope EB gets a chance to coach this team. Move Ron to the front office, let EB coach, and hire a better personnel man.
Given your criticisms of Ron, why on earth would you suggest that he go to the front office?
Continuity due to the fact players seem to like him. . With his level-headedness I think he's got a role in a football organization. I just don't think his teams bring it for important games. They start off slow. And lose important games. And I think he is blind to the value of an OL. That to me is mostly a coaching issue. That doesn't make him a bad person to have with the Commanders. It's sort of like a Brad Stevens for the Celtics thing. Even if that role was say, GM, the coach is going to have a lot of say in personnel.

Back to back weeks, Howell has made huge throws in the final seconds of the first half to get the team in FG range. With 14 seconds left and at the Arizona 44, Howell threw a great pass to Samuel for a 32 yard gain and set up an easy FG. This followed Howell's sack/fumble/TD. That was a much-needed FG. This week, on 3rd an 11 with 20 seconds remaining and on their own 34. he hit Bates for 34 yards to get into FG range. That FG made it a one-possession game which they were able to tie it up on their first 2nd half drive.

Both those FGs ended up being important points in two close games.
