***OFFICIAL*** Washington Commanders Thread (1 Viewer)

I continue to have headaches over them not taking Levis or Hooker. This team has had no QB for 30+ years (maybe RG3 for 12 weeks) And I loved me some Kirk, but he wasn't a SB QB. Even if you think Howell is the future (a 5th rounder). Even if you think Levis or Hooker comp to Ryan Leaf and Akili Smith. A team that hasnt had a QB in 30+ years doesn't have the luxury of not taking the 1% chance they work out. Next year when we are drafting 12th and the QBs like Williams, Maye and Penix are already drafted and the new GM is drafting a LT .... remember that Ron hosed you by taking a CB that weighs less than your 13 year old son.

Chase Roullier released.

  • The release saves the Commanders $8.37 million against the cap.
  • Roullier was set to enter the third season of the four-year, $40 million deal he signed in 2021.
  • He started 63 games in his seven seasons with Washington, though only 10 in the past two years because of injuries.

Report: Colts ask NFL to investigate possible tampering by Commanders with Andrew Luck

I like John Keim and don't know why he'd alter his article rather than leaving it as is and posting a correction (if there was any correction to make).

The item in the Post includes an interesting wrinkle. Per the Post, the original article from John Keim of ESPN.com said that the Commanders had “even phoned the retired Andrew Luck.” The story was later revised to say that the Commanders had “even phoned about retired Andrew Luck.”

Something that specific and tangential to the article (which focused on the Commanders’ commitment to Sam Howell) didn’t happen accidentally. Someone noticed that, as worded, it could be problematic to the Commanders.

Report of Commanders’ interest in Andrew Luck first surfaced last year

Nearly 14 months before John Keim of ESPN.com buried a Luck nugget in an article under an unrelated headline, Keim . . . buried a Luck nugget in an article under an unrelated headline.

March 19, 2022. “How Joe Gibbs, film study and analytics led the Washington Commanders to Carson Wentz.” Fifteenth paragraph: “At one point [the Commanders] even wondered: Would Andrew Luck, the retired former Colt, want to play again? That went nowhere.”

Just listened to Brian Davis being interviewed by junkies. Woof. It was a rough conversation where he side stepped their questions and gave answers that contradicted themselves. I mean he's obviously made a lot of money, but one answer he says he is a billionaire, next one he says he's really not, then he says he made a deal to get $5B/year in intellectual property. He had two opposite stories about his dealings with athletes on a business deal. Maybe he was being truthful, but for a Duke guy he was not articulate at all. If I was his counselor, no way would I have him out in public doing media. Did not sound like he had it all together for his bid.

This was an interesting read. I would also check Shawn Merriman Twitter regarding Davis.

Fun story, I'm sure it's all super shady, but the NFL isn't letting this guy within 20 miles of an NFL team. Enjoying it though, Davis seems like the guy selling crypto timeshares or something.

@ProFootballTalk

This is an actual, not-The-Onion quote from Brian Davis, earlier today on @JunksRadio, on the source for his funding to buy the Commanders: “My money comes from white people . . . who are Jewish, Italian, and Sicilian.”

WTF!?!?!? :lmao:

Now there's a hangup with Josh Harris wanting to buy the team, apparently having to do with having enough money to buy the team but not having enought money to actually operate the team.
https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.c...about-the-josh-harris-bid-for-the-commanders/

What'll probably happen is the NFL will vote to violate NFL rules to allow Harris's bid to go through because they want Snyder out soooooo badly.

After that will come Snyder's demand that, separate from the sale agreement, the NFL indemnify him. I expect that, if it gets far enough that the sale is approved, Snyder won't get the NFL's agreement. And he'll either fold or things will be in court for years.

Now just kinda find out what MLB goes with the pattern of owning the 76ers, Devils, and Commanders. Maybe Atlanta?

Anyway congrats.

As a Devils fan I haven't really had much complaint about this ownership (the rebuild took a long time but we look set to be a top team for the next decade). They have made an especially converted effort in building/maintaining relationship with season ticket members - especially long term ones so I wouldn't be surprised to see that happen with your team, especially following your prior ownership.

Personal visibility hasn't been his thing here - but I figure you won't mind that so much.

Congrats!

The owners still have to vote on it but they want Danny gone - if anything this might just shift the rules for future purchases.

Harris is a guy that when he became interested in the Devils the league basically cleared the decks to get him - akin to when the NBA did the same with Steve Ballmer and the Clippers. He'll be approved and it will be fine.

Re: the schedule. As I go down the list, I keep getting around .500. 8-9 or something like that. The defense should be above average and will keep them in many games. The offense is a wild card with Howell, Bienemy, and the tweaked offensive line.

I believe the season may turn on things like turnovers and injuries. If the breaks go Washington's way, maybe they win 10. If the breaks don't go there way maybe they lose 10 or more. That's how it feels to me...right in the middle.

My main worry is the offensive line. Specifically I wish we could upgrade at left guard. Not sure how stoked to be over the Paul vs Charles battle...

Glad the purchase agreement is signed. The league is going to jump on reviewing it and approving it if at all possible.

And true to form:

Report: Daniel Snyder is lobbying the NFL to limit release of Mary Jo White report

ESPN reports that Snyder and his lawyers currently are lobbying the league to limit the contents of the White report that will be publicly released.
Ultimately, the question becomes the framing of the White report. It’s no coincidence that the White report remains unfinished. It won’t be finished until Snyder is out. And it quite likely will have a different tone and content if he goes quietly than if he drags his feet and/or makes a fuss. On one hand, the ESPN report seems more than plausible because that nuance would likely be lost on Snyder. He would want an assurance that the White report will be more slo-pitch softball than high heat. The mere fact that White hasn’t finished her report (likely because her client hasn’t wanted her to finish her work) should tell Snyder that, if he sells and exits, it will be a sanitized, kid-gloves document. If he refuses to go, it will be a flamethrower.

Did the same thing with the Sixers. Tore the whole thing down and rebuilt it. Nothing bad to say about the guy.

With his experience I have no doubts harris will get the stadium fixed/replaced and make everything better for the players and fans. I’m sure he’s coming in with a 3-5 yr plan to get the organization run right. Starting w a real GM. There’s a reason Mayhew in so many words said he didn’t try hard during draft. That dude is gone before next season even if they go to the playoffs.

On the field Ron will get a year. If he misses the playoffs he’s done too. And I don’t think they can get to playoffs without a lot of things bouncing their way. He may even be gone if they win a playoff game. For no reason other than the optics of being with the past regine. Although the weight of not being asked so much about Snyder may free up the coach and players to perform better. Little things like that matter when it comes to a game of inches

So to me while harris owns it now, I don’t think his imprint starts on the field until next year. Excited to see what he and a real GM can do over the next 3 years.

Losing bidder sues for a zillion dollars ... Okay only half a trillion

His group's bid backed involves the CIA and Ferdinand Marcos?!?

Not sure why Bank of America did not return the bank drafts.
Good question. But, I think first someone needs to confirm that these bank drafts are indeed legitimate. Reading the text of that story, there are a lot of "allegedly" qualifiers thrown in there and some pretty wild stories:

The more relevant number, for now, is $5 billion. That’s the amount of the bank draft that allegedly was tendered to Bank of America by Urban Echo. As noted by sports betting attorney Daniel Wallach, the $5 billion apparently comes from the Estate of Severino Garcia Sta. Romana. As also noted by Wallach, research regarding the Estate of Severino Garcia Sta. Romana quickly leads to an “incredible tale of large quantities of gold illegally acquired by former Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos from a CIA operative.”

This whole thing sounds pretty shady to me. I have a hunch that more will be revealed over time, and it will not be that "poor Brian Davis got shafted."

My guess to what happened was, in the course of due diligence for anti-money laundering, Urban Echo was unable to adequately satisfy BofA's compliance people about the source of funds or any other issues they may have had. Because of that, their offer was never tendered.

Ron sees his possible successor.

Rivera said Bieniemy has changed the Commanders’ Organized Team Activities because he has a different approach to how he wants players to learn the offense, and the Commanders’ defensive and special teams coaches have also gone along with how Bieniemy wants to do things. I gave him the opportunity to script a lot of things we’re doing, handling all the scheduling,” Rivera said. “That’s why things are different, that’s why we’re not on the field already, because of some of the things he wanted to change and wanted to work on.”

Rivera said he likes the way Bieniemy commands attention when addressing the team. “It’s been exciting,” Rivera said. EB is a high-energy, high-impact guy. he doesn’t pull any punches, he’s very direct with the players, which is good.” Rivera made clear that he’s giving Bieniemy more authority than most coordinators have, reflecting the additional title Bieniemy has. “I don’t believe you give the assistant head coach title and it’s gratuitous,” Rivera said. “It’s not just a title. It’s a working title. He’s doing those things and he’s got those responsibilities, and I think he relishes it. He’s one of those guys who very few people are going to out-work.”

A week ago Washington's TE lineup looked like Logan Thomas, John Bates, Cole Turner, Amari Rogers, and Curtis Hodges.
That seems like "hope again that Logan Thomas can replicate his season from X years ago" and a bunch of caulk.
Today Washington's TE lineup is like Logan Thomas, John Bates, Cole Turner, and Curtis Hodges.
Amari Rogers is done for the year.

Why did they not choose a TE in the draft?
I am hoping the answer is Cole Turner. But who knows (and in hindsight, yeah we probably should have)

Well that was fun while it lasted. Brian Davis dismisses his lawsuit and it appears we will not be seeing the trustee for the Estate of Severino Garcia Santa Romana attending NFL owners meetings next year.

Any legs to the rumors that the bank drafts he/they presented to B of A were fakes?

I think that was almost certainly worthless paper - just based on the initial reporting from Dan Wallach (@WALLACHLEGAL) and others. This voluntary dismissal of his $500bln lawsuit a couple weeks after it was filed is consistent with that notion.

From the outside looking in .... doesn't it seem like he tried to fake a purchase of the Commanders as a way to steal $5.1B in fake bank drafts? I mean, I appreciate the 'go big or go home' attempt, but you gotta be super stupid to think that would work if that's what he was doing. And that's gotta be like forever years in jail

I'm one of the losers that listens to The Junkies (via podcast) all of the time. To their/his credit, when BD was interviewed on that show Bickel at least hinted this was a Hail Mary lawsuit attempt. I think you (and Bickel) are all spot on.

Where the hell is everybody?!!

IT'S EMANCIPATION DAY!!! FREE AT LAST, FREE AT LAST!!!

Heading to the 'Burgundy and Sold' Party out in Ashburn, Virginia (Old Ox Brewery) right now!

Bigger party this afternoon/evening down near the DC Waterfront. It's gonna be EPIC!!!

It's a new dawn, it's a new day, and I'm feelin'...GOOOOOOD!!!

So Josh Harris now owns the Sixers, Devils and Commanders. Does he have plans to buy the Marlins, Nats or Braves as well?

Such a good day! Forget how awful Dan was at running anything. Dan was a bad person. Really bad. So bad the NFL is suing him for $60M on the way out the door.

He’s not going to jail but the details In this link explain specifically what gave him the boot.

He definitely shielded $11M that should have shared with the other owners and kept it for himself. $11M is confirmed and it could be as high as $44 million.

So this absolute numbskull just lost his football team, got fined $60M on the way out, got grilled by Congress, and opened himself up to potential prosecution, all for absolute pocket change by league standards.

What a ****ing moron.

And please note, for all the talk about workplace environment and sexual harassment, in the end it was stealing some coins out of the leagues offering plate that was the catalyst to kicking him out. He’d still be here if it wasn’t for that. I’ve been saying that since this started and it’s now confirmed.

What a miserable, stupid, cheapskate little prick. I hope a DA that wants to make a name for themselves decides to pick this up.

BYE DAN!!!

Is that the one owned by a FBG? I know it was a brewery in that area, but can't recall the name of the place or the FBG handle.
Not that I’m aware of. Sebowski co-founded Ocelot with his brother.
That's what I was thinking of. Thanks.
