Some additional signings:

Barton, LB, from Seattle -- he'll apparently be in the mix to start at Mike LB, particularly if Holcomb leaves?

Cam Dantzler, CB, signed off waivers from Minn -- depth??

I hear the Barton signing may have some potential...not sure about Dantzler...

This past season, Rivera said he wants to be a run first team. Bieniemy's background is clearly in the west coast offense, which uses a lot of short passing mixed in with or in lieu of the running game. So the big question is will they be run first or more west coast oriented?
Bieneiemy was an RB coach before he was an OC. And prior to being a RB coach he was an actual NFL RB. I don't think there'll be a problem with running first.
The Commanders just fired their offensive line coach, John Matsko. Weird timing. Maybe there was some difference or conflict with Bieniemy?

More on Daron Payne, whose agent wanted him to sit out last offseason due to lack of a new deal.

If it were up to his agent, Daron Payne would have handled last offseason a bit differently. After the Commanders failed to offer him a long-term contract extension in 2022, the defensive tackle said his representative wanted him to skip offseason workouts and hold out for a new deal.

But Payne didn’t go that route — he likes football too much to voluntarily sit out, he said. “I wanted to be here for the team,” Payne said. “I wanted to be around the guys.” Payne’s effort to put in the work not only led to a breakout year, but it sent a message to the Commanders’ brass that ultimately paid off with a four-year, $90 million deal that became official Monday when the defensive tackle signed the new contract.

Yeah, I'm thinking Bienemy wants to bring in his own guy. To be fair, it's probably not unusual for an OC to hand pick his assistants. I'll be he's already got someone picked out. Hope he's good because Matsko appeared to be capable. I

This was the weird case where it worked out for both the player and the team. Payne has a good attitude. He wanted to get paid but he didn't play games to do so. He just showed his worth on the field.

I’m pretty happy with what they’ve done so far. Could nitpick some stuff, sure, but it’s as lame duck a year as you’ll ever see and they’re bringing in reasonable guys to compete for starting spots that are weaknesses. And of course, the two big moves in Bienemy and Payne.

I like the idea of trading down if there’s no clear cut guy they gotta have based on their board. I’d rather see them get future picks though instead of extra picks this year. Who knows what this place will look like this time next year. I’m sure the front office and coaching staff are much more interested in picks this year to try to save their jobs though.

And good for Heinicke. Jumbo over at Extremeskins has been a real jackass regarding him and the infighting on the board is just ridic. He is what he is. Can’t we just be grateful for the effort?

Jeremy Reaves tendered.

The Washington Commanders appear poised to keep another one of their Pro Bowlers around. The team officially tendered safety, special teams ace and restricted free agent Jeremy Reaves, the team announced Tuesday. The use of the original tender comes with a salary of $2.63 million, which means the Commanders can match any offer sheet Reaves signs with another team. However, the two sides have been in discussions over an extension beyond the terms of the tender following Reaves’ breakout season, according to a person close to the situation who was not authorized to speak publicly.

Speculation on who will replace Matsko.

Rivera and Bieniemy are expected to discuss replacement options. Assistant offensive line coach Travelle Wharton and tight ends coach Juan Castillo are the likely in-house candidates. Castillo served as OL coach for three teams, including the Eagles under head coach Andy Reid, from 1998 to 2010. Rivera was part of that staff, and Bieniemy had worked with Reid in Kansas City since 2013.

More on Andrew Wylie

Undrafted in 2017, Wylie became a starter at guard in 2018, the same year Bieniemy began OC duties. He then shifted to right tackle in 2021 and started all 20 regular-season and playoff games for the Super Bowl champs in 2022 — on a $2.5 million salary. Overall, Wylie has made 59 regular-season starts over the past five years.

That versatility is helpful, though it adds an element of confusion with projecting Washington’s 2023 lineup. Talk of shifting right tackle Sam Cosmi to guard began last year, and some analysts have long seen the 2021 second-round pick ultimately playing inside, which would work if Wylie played right tackle. Cornelius Lucas remains as the swing tackle, regardless. The Commanders also solidified the interior spots by agreeing with G/C Nick Gates on Monday to a three-year deal.

It seemed like Wylie recognized his time in Kansas City was over following the Super Bowl. Not for cause or poor performance, but because teams that win rings have to pay their stars, which squeezes out some rank-and-file players.

Do we have Holcomb's replacement? I was a little surprised he left. When healthy he played well for us.
No. The cupboard is pretty bare at LB.
Until last year I thought Holcomb was overrated by locals. He was fast, out of position a lot, not good against the run. He improved a good bit last year, though.

Is the Seattle LB still in play? or maybe we look at a LB in the first or 2nd round? Although I know we all want that OL improved too.

Outlook: Howell would be the ideal big-picture starter because he offers a combination of youth, potential and an inexpensive rookie contract that runs through 2025. Brissett is in line with the recent journeymen to run through Ashburn, including Ryan Fitzpatrick and Carson Wentz, but he is likely better positioned to take immediate advantage of Washington’s playmakers, including wide receiver Terry McLaurin.

The coaching staff faces some uncertainty amid a possible ownership change and not having a winning record in any of the three seasons under Rivera, which would seemingly mean leaning toward the veteran. But that would go against Rivera’s two-month message in which he touted Howell. Perhaps he never thought the QB dominos would allow the Commanders to add a player of Brissett’s value. Howell will get a shot at the starting gig either way.

Revamping the offensive line with new veterans won’t stop the Washington Commanders from exploring help in next month’s NFL Draft. The Commanders have scheduled pre-draft top-30 visits with Tennessee offensive tackle Darnell Wright and Florida guard O’Cyrus Torrence, according to multiple people with knowledge of the prospects’ plans. Per reports, Washington also plans to meet with Ohio State tackle Dawand Jones for a top-30 visit. All three linemen project to be among the top 30-50 prospects selected and perhaps higher by the time we reach April 27’s first round.

Washington holds the 16th selection, along with its own second-round pick. The Commanders traded down in the first round last year to acquire additional picks. That approach would be logical again, especially if these linemen become targets.

They need LB depth sure, but they played a grand total of 4 snaps all season long in a 4-3 look. Wouldn’t expect to see anything other than another low cost signing or mid to late pick.

Washington played a 4-3 (with 3 linebackers) on four snaps last season. Four. Would be nuts to re-sign Holcomb for the same money as Barton -- he wouldn't take less -- knowing one of them wouldn't play. Barton's $3.5M cap hit isn't high but it's 16th highest on the team now.

So we have Jamin Davis, Barton, and who at linebacker right now?
Didn't they re-sign Mayo and Eifler? Mayo sucks. Not sure I've ever seen Eifler play. Did he make a tackle last season? Guess they are Special Teams LBs. Definitely a void in the middle.

I think the re-signed those 2, yes. So we've basically got Davis and Barton and not much else.

Jets signed Wes Schweitzer. So there's even more need for O-line help. And if they're planning on Rouillier starting and playing a whole season, they're fools. Tired of them waiting around too long for oft-injured players to come back and play as if they're completely healthy. Rouillier never was that good anyway IMO.

A couple quotes from Barton on John Keim's twitter feed:

Barton got his biggest chance to start this season (career high 11 starts). Said in the 1st half of the year, "not in a solid consistent groove." Then in the 2nd half: "The game slowed down. Almost seemed like everything was in slow motion. I caught a groove, making good plays."
LB Cody Barton said he feels most comfortable playing in the middle. (He played all 3 LB spots in Seattle). "I like taking control and communicating." He also said they did not know Wash was interested until Monday when legal tampering began.

Information about Wylie and Gates.
Wylie was vague when asked about his role on the OL. ... But the plan is to play him at RT and have Cosmi shift to RG.
Andrew Wylie said on a conf call says "to continue working under [Bieniemy's] offense is incredible to me. That was a driving factor... He's intense and he's big on running the ball and finishing blocks. He's a very intense guy."
Nick Gates says the plan is for him to play Center, but he can also play guard. Says he likes center because "i like being in charge."
Gates said of being on the same team with Payne/Allen: "nice not having to play against those guys twice a year. Their whole D-line is really good. Those games were always marked on the calendar."

Washington has tendered an offer to Cam Sims. So we'll get solid special teams play all year, and 1-2 big catches that break games open.

I've never understood why he doesn't play more at WR. Must not be consistent enough I guess.

As reported on Thursday night, there’s a belief that a sale of the Commanders is imminent. A new fact supports this timetable.

Specifically, signing bonuses for newly-signed contracts aren’t due imminently.

Ben Standig of TheAthletic.com reports that deals finalized in the past week delay the initial payment schedule. Instead of the first installment being due within 15 to 30 days after executing, the money is due roughly two months post-execution.

Wylie is a really solid addition to your team. Sad to see him leave KC. And a really good character guy to boot.

Ron Rivera talking about the sale of the team: https://theathletic.com/4358808/202...ource=emp-shared-article&access_token=7916765

Soon, another billionaire will weigh in. Not just on the roster. Everything, including Rivera’s future. The coach is mentally prepped to re-interview for his job. “There will be a discussion about what happened over the last three years,” said Rivera, who signed a five-year contract in 2020. “I’ll be honest. I’ll be upfront. Tell the truth. I’ll talk about the vision … and what I think will happen. … The owner has got to be able to believe in what I’m talking about. Hopefully, I can do that. And if not, I’ll be gone in a year.”

Future quarterback production and promise are logical tipping points.

Wow, kinda surprised. I expected to come in here and see this thread had exploded with the news of the sale. Shocked at the lack of reaction.
Some discussion in the Snyder thread, but I’ve been through enough of Snyder’s shenanigans to sort of expect that he’s going to do something to try to extract more, and potentially blow up the deal. So, I won’t celebrate until it is officially closed.

Trust me its a happy day for this fanbase. I've been a fan since the late 70s, I could not be happier!! The wicked witchhead is dead!!! Can we please get our proper name back? Washington Redskins please!!!

Sadly that is not coming back. No new owner is going to set themselves up to deal with a PR nightmare out of the gate. I do think a new owner will re-brand with something with a native american name so we can bring back traditions. Like the spear, the fight song, etc. If not, just go back to the Football Team. In any case, I'm willing to give up the name for a new owner.

There's also no promise this team will be good anytime soon. Which is fine. Work on a new stadium, find a new GM in the next 6 months, and take 2-3 years to turn it back into a team that is consistently in the playoffs. Whether Ron is a part of that is up to the new GM.

That being said, until this is 100% sold I'm still scared Snyder will pull the plug on a deal.

I never thought I'd see the day...so, so happy! I'm not expecting us to go 12-4 next year or anything, but I'm looking forward to dare I say at least a "normally run team!"

I'm normally a member of the "be careful what you wish for" crowd. Not here. I was never a fan of the WFT (I rooted for the Baltimore teams), but no fan base deserves what that dude did to it. Good riddance to an awful person.

I'd imagine Harris will clear the owners vote easily.

It'll be interesting to see how management of the team is changed/handled from a front office perspective.

The new stadium has to be at the RFK site, right?
