***OFFICIAL*** Washington Commanders Thread (2 Viewers)

There's a good long article in the Athletic about Ron Rivera:
https://theathletic.com/5185070/202...vera-fired/?access_token=7916765&redirected=1

Here it is archived if you don't have access to the Athletic:

“Nice guy,” a former Washington staffer said, “but it was clear he (made choices) based on, ‘What’s the narrative out there, and how can I change it?'”
Most personnel moves fell flat. Of the seven players who garnered Pro Bowl honors under Rivera, six were inherited by the new staff, including defensive tackles Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne and wide receiver Terry McLaurin. Four years later, those three remain the best players on the roster.

I saw that stat during the game this weekend. Good for him. I always felt like he was a stand-up guy who just played hard. I think he had some degree of loyalty to us for drafting him after his health issues caused him to slide. While I think we got fair compensation for him, I also wonder why they felt the need to trade both him and Young. My guess is it comes down to draft flexibility and maybe questions around being able to re-sign him, but it also made a hole that we then need to fill in the off-season...presumably with one of the picks we have.

KC assistant GM Mike Borgonzi is interviewing as I Tweet. More names from Monday who are interviewing today.
Per sources, Browns asst. GM Glenn Cook is expected to interview today and Eagles asst. GM Alec Halaby is scheduled to interview Wednesday. The team is holding these interviews at Josh Harris's home in Miami.Cunningham is NOT today. Still TBD.
49ers assistant GM Adam Peters will also interview with the Commanders in Miami this evening, per source.

Josh isn't playing around. I love how wide and thorough the net has been so far. Much different than Dan getting a hard on for one player or coach, whoever he thinks would make the biggest splash, and jump without doing due diligence and exploring all the available options...

Or when Dan was unable to even get people interested in interviewing.

Suddenly the GM and HC jobs in Washington are seen as desirable. New owner with a decent track record in other sports, plenty of cap money, high draft picks.

Great point. We have been treated/viewed like a franchise who's headquarters was built on a burial ground. What a difference getting the son of Satan out and a respectable owner in with a great track record. Also helps to have the draft capitol and cap space we have right now.

Harris is a dream owner. He won't be perfect, but he's done this before. His group has the liquid assets necessary to pay well, fix stadiums, improve weight lifting rooms, etc. And experience running a sports team. That doesn't add up to a Super Bowl without a lot of things falling into place (see his 76ers which haven't won a title). He will however do things as professionally as possible. Including hiring coaches, etc.

Dan was out of money (and a really, really bad person). Much like a normal person that has too much of their net worth in their house, Dan had too much in the value of the team. He was poor from a liquidity perspective. The only way for him to get to get liquid was by selling the team (or by stealing from the NFL through financial shenanigans).

It's nice having an owner that isn't a bad person nor cash poor.

I’m to the point I’ve convinced myself we are landing both Peters and Johnson and will be really disappointed if either fail to happen. Add in Drake Maye and hooboy…that’s how you launch a rebuild.

Interesting combo of names, btw lol

Chiefs assistant G.M. Mike Borgonzi, Browns assistant G.M. Glenn Cook, and 49ers assistant G.M. Adam Peters are slated to meet with Harris on Tuesday. Eagles assistant G.M. Alec Halaby and Bears assistant G.M. Ian Cunningham are set for interviews on Wednesday.

FWIW, I think Cunningham has a good shot at this job. I've thought he was the favorite for a while, though no media outlets I've seen have had him in the top 3 candidates.. The Ozzie Newsome association being the biggest plus. With Roseman too.

PFT and some national media people are talking "Belichik to Washington." Meanwhile all the local beat reporters are reporting that there's no interest in him from the front office.

I think maybe this is a big change, and now local team ownership is talking once again to local media.

Its official, The Commanders have hired a new general manager: The San Francisco 49ers assistant GM Adam Peters. :drive:
So what do we know about this guy?

Glad they got it done quickly. Now I hope they can land one of the top HC candidates. I'm hoping for Ben Johnson, but I admit I don't really know which of these guys will make a good HC

By all accounts, he was the best GM candidate in the entire league. Many quotes saying this was a grand slam hire for Washington. He's been a success everywhere he's been, won Super Bowls with the Patriots and Broncos and was a huge part of building the Niners current stacked roster. HUGE get for Washington, just read the 49ers forums, they are really pissed they didn't promote him to head GM.

And many are speculating Ben Johnson will be our new coach. If that happens, I'd say its all but a given Maye is our pick at 1.2.

Absolutely amazing! I cannot believe how everything has fallen in place over the last 12 months. It’s like hitting the powerball. We went from a truly garbage franchise that had to beg people to work here to the most desirable spot in the league in record time.

A few months from now we will be talking about Peters/Johnson/Maye and the exciting group of draft picks and free agents we snagged to build the roster. We will probably be considered the hottest up and comer next year and are going to get tons of press. There’s no reason this can’t be a playoff team next year- it’s not that hard to get to 9 wins and that usually does it.

I’m calling it now.

2024- early round playoff exit.
2025- deep playoff contender
2026- Super Bowl window is wide open

https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/...ve-for-the-new-ownership-source-says/3514767/

"He spent seven years with the Niners, first as VP of player personnel and then the past three as assistant GM working under John Lynch.

A Super Bowl champion with Denver from his eight years with the Broncos that followed a stint in New England, Peters was one of two finalists for the job along with Chicago AGM Ian Cunningham."

Look at the 49'ers roster. It's one of the best in the league. A lot of that is due to Peters.

Graduate assistant in fball ops at UCLA
Scouting assistant in NE

Area scout in NE
Regional scout in DEN
National scout in DEN
Asst. dir. of college scouting in DEN
Director of college scouting in DEN
VP of player personnel in SF
Asst. GM in SF
GM in WAS

Howell was sacked 65 times, most in the league. He looked good earlier in the season, so why pivot to another QB? Instead, how about building that OL?

That's what I've been hoping all along. Trade back, get a top 3 OL player, and address the many needs we have with all these draft picks.

I'm soured on Howell. The reason he looked worse over the year is more than just the OL. It's that the opponents learn a QB's tendencies after watching game film. They figured out that they could disguise the pre-snap read and Howell could not adjust. There were guys open as has been shown on some film. Can he learn it? Maybe. Our position coaches super sucked but you'd think Bienemy could have gotten more from Howell by year end. He couldn't. And history shows that QBs with slow progression reads don't ever get out of that.

That doesn't mean we don't trade down if the right offer is there. They can get a solid QB in round 2, and let them compete with Howell. It;s a deep QB draft. Problem with that is we may never draft this high again. If Maye Williams or Daniels are the real deal you really have to take them and fill holes with $90M in cap space.

That's why they hired a real GM with talent evaluation background. I feel confident he will do the right thing regarding Howell, which is 1000x more than any of us know. Its pretty telling SF passed over Howell and they took Purdy even later in the same draft. To me it means they didn't think Howell was worthy of drafting in round 1-4. It's also telling that prior to that they loved Trey Lance and wasted picks to get him. So even the best make mistakes. There is a lot that goes in to a QBs success. or failure. You can actually mess up at QB and have a good enough other 21 players it can get hidden. SF also has a stud LT, which helps. I'd be fine with a LT at like 8th pick and getting an extra pick this year and next.

I think his first issue is fixing this defense. It's bad. It's one of the lowest paid in the NFL, which often means least talented. The CBs are slow. There are no LBs. There is no edge rush. It's hard to win football games when the opponent is dragging the D up and down the field 10 times a game. They need playmakers. They won't use a 1st on the problem, but they gotta find some playmakers later in the draft. And this GM has proven he can find those.

It's official now. Adam Peters is GM of the Washington Commanders.

"Throughout my career in the NFL, I’ve learned that successful organizations begin with a strong ownership group willing to commit the resources needed to foster a culture of winning. We have that here in Washington and it’s my responsibility and privilege to carry out the mission of delivering a team that will ultimately compete for Super Bowls. I know how much the Commanders mean to our fans, our owners, the legends who paved the way for this franchise, and the NFL. The work starts now.”

Peters replaces Martin Mayhew as General Manager."

Press conference tomorrow at 2 pm in Ashburn with Adam Peters.

In about seven months, the Josh Harris ownership group has turned Washington from NFL pariah to NFL destination. That’s remarkable.

Honestly, and not just a homer take, but the way Dallas and the Eagles have imploded, I think Washington might be in the best position to take control of this division in the next few years. Obviously, we need to get the right head coach (I'm very confident we will) and then hit some home runs in this draft (also confident we will with Peters running the show) I'm excited for the future!

Two key take aways from the Adam Peters press conference...
  1. "what I can tell you is that you're going to see great competitors, you're going to see a physical team" .... in other words, the current team isn't physical
  2. "We are going to build through the draft here and supplement through free agency." ... the draft really matters to this guy unlike the last guy
I assume we are gonna finally get some big nasties on the OL. Guys with more attitude and fight. Love this.

Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Benjamin Johnson is scheduled to have a virtual interview with the Washington Commanders on Friday, Jan. 19.

Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris has a busy schedule this week as he interviews for three head coaching jobs. He will interview with the Panthers on Wednesday, the Commanders on Thursday and the Seahawks on Friday, according to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN. All three interviews are virtual.

Bobby Slowik interviews on Sunday. Big fan of this guy mostly because he reminds me of a less casual Mike McDaniel. Young. Success with QBs. Not a re-tread. Aggressive scheme. Worked for 49ers from 2017-2022 so has the GM connection. Johnson is probably a better hire, but I'm very much OK with this guy too.

Regardless of whether the Lions win or lose on Sunday, Washington will get their second interview with Ben Johnson within the next 2 weeks. I'm pretty sure he is their first choice for HV.

Dan Quinn was wrongly reported to be coming for his third interview. He rescheduled his second interview and that's what is coming up.

It must be a done deal. Contract terms agreed and only waiting until DET season is over. Otherwise they would have hired Quinn, Morris or Slowik already.

Dan Sndyer gone? check
Hired great new GM? check
Getting ready to hire one of the most coveted coaches in the league? check
Plenty of draft capitol and salary cap room to improve roster? check

There are LOTS of reasons for optimism and excitement for us lifelong Washington fans. I do wish we could rebrand as this Commanders name and mascot is so dumb, but outside of that, everything most of us have wished for is coming to fruition. Oh, and Dallas and the Eagles chocking down the stretch was pretty sweet too. :pickle: :drive:

Ben Standig
@BenStandig

Busy 48 hours ahead for the Commanders. The in person interview schedule:

Today [Monday] - Anthony Weaver, Mike Macdonald
Tue - Dan Quinn; Aaron Glenn, Ben Johnson in DET
(Previous - Slowik, Bieniemy)

I think we'll have a HC this week.

As someone who has spent my whole life as a football bigamist rooting for both Detroit and Washington, I'm honestly not sure how to process this news.

Obviously the Detroit side of me is happy. As for the Commanders, will be interesting to see who they go after. Most of the remaining top candidates seem to be defensive guys (McDonald, Quinn, Glenn, hell even Vrabel and Belichick), which would mean their choice of OC would be almost as important, especially since job #1 will be to develop the No. 2 pick into a franchise QB

Most would agree that Johnson is one of the better OCs in the league. We have no idea how good of a HC he will be. It's still possible that Washington gets the better HC out of all this.

Good point. You're talking to a guy who wanted the Lions to hire Whisenhunt over Caldwell and Bienemy over Campbell, and was also excited about the Jay Gruden hire for DC. I know nothing.
