***OFFICIAL*** Washington Commanders Thread (3 Viewers)

Weird, it's been to Washington 2nd and New England 3rd
NFL.com is showing Washington 2nd and NE 3rd right now. Are they incorrect??
That’s currently correct.
Is there a concern if both Washington and NE lose next week that the order would flip based on SOS? Does NE have to win for us to keep the 1.2?
Since the SOS bounced around some today just a few games, I assume it can change quite a bit next week.

If I'm doing the math right, and assuming Washington and NE both lose, only 5 games matter in Week 18:
Atl vs NO
Den vs LV
Ten vs Indy
Pitts vs Balt
Chi vs GB

For Week 18:
Washington needs Chicago and Atlanta to lose to clinch the #2 seed.

If Chicago wins and Atlanta loses, then Washington needs 1 of Indy, Pittsburgh, and Las Vegas to win next week to clinch the #2 seed.
If Chicago loses and Atlanta wins, then Washington needs 2 of Indy, Pittsburgh, and Las Vegas to win next week to clinch the #2 seed.
If Chicago wins and Atlanta wins, then Washington needs all 3 of Indy, Pittsburgh, and Las Vegas to win next week to clinch the #2 seed.

They are going to have a top 3 pick. I don't think you can go into 2024 with only Howell. Now when they take that QB is the question. Someone will trade up for them. And maybe you could grab Nix, Penix, or McCarthy in round 2. Or maybe one of those top 3 is a SB winning QB and they staay put. That's something none of us are smart enough to know. I love Caleb. I really really like Drake Maye. And I like Daniels. All of them would be great to me. But Harris has to get the right GM to evaluate these QBs so we don't waste a pick or miss the chance to trade down for a haul.

My guess is this team has more talent than we can see. Ron is not a good coach. He has hired position coaches that are horrible. Most of his positions coaches were friends/family. And EB couldn't steal the best coaches from KC when he came. Nor would a good position coach have come to this org given it's disarray the last 10 years.

For instance ....
  • The QB coach is in his first NFL gig. He has NEVER coached nor played in the NFL The website credits him with developing awesome QBs such as David Mills and Kevin Hogan. Someone will have to provide me their NFL resumes that would make that a resume builder for a coach.
  • The WR coach is in his first NFL coaching job. He did play WR in the NFL and well. But shouldn't he start as an assistant role?
  • The LB coach is a friend of his and Ron's nephew is the assistant LB coach. (this is normal, but he alsio was the head DB coach despite playing RB in college). The kid never played D and he is coaching LBs/CBs. He is like 26 years old.
  • The interim DB coach (since the other left) is in his 3rd season and never played DB. He is like 24 years old. I believe he coached HS last year.
  • The TE coach played DL in college at Mich Tech.
  • etc
You literally can't make up how much Ron tries to turn people into something they are not. You know who is supposed to coach DBs? Someone that has played DB. You know who is supposed to coach LBs? Someone that wasn't a RB in college. Would you hire an accountant to train your IT guy? Or a HR person to train your salesforce in how to sell? I hope not. That's essentailly what he has done. The players had 10x better coaches in coilege.

This team likely isn't that far away from being good for no reason other than having a quality coaching staff. And we know that will be new in 2024. Then a GM adding the right personnel to the mix at pretty much any position is only going to make it better.

My first step as a GM would be interviewing the current players. McLaurin, Allen, Payne, Fuller, etc, etc, etc. Find out what they think behind closed doors. Because I think that's how you determine if Howell, Forbes, J Davis, St Juste, and many young players are talented and simply being mis-coached, or if they simply don't have what it takes for the NFL. players know. They always know.

Saw this stat, literally makes me sick...
The NFL when the Commanders hired Ron Rivera:
Lions had 3 wins
Dolphins had 5 wins
Jaguars had 6 wins
Bengals had 2 wins
Pitiful that after 4 years and we are just now restarting tbe rebuild. Ron did NOTHING for this organization.

I just want to quote some things I agree with, and leave it at that for now.

@Brunell4MVP

I'm in the opposite camp regarding Caleb Williams. Very concerned about the red flags being mentioned by credible NFL prospect analysts, but I'm willing to listen.

I want nothing to do with another Griffin or Haskins. No cult of personality, head case, or entitlement, please.

Hoping Harris gets us off on the right foot by bringing in the best GM he possibly can, and that GM hires the best Coach he possibly can, and the collective brain trust has a great 2024 Draft.

I don't want the wrong kind of QB mucking things up right out of the gate. Everything I'm reading gives me plenty of concern about Williams, but again, I'm willing to listen.

McLauren said in the 4th quarter all the players were telling him he was going to get 1000 yards and they were all going to block like hell for him.

Logan Thomas' comments about Bienemy aren't exactly what you would say when you like a coach. Got a feeling this is gonna be a clean sweep of coaches out the door

It probably should be a clean sweep. Rivera, Jason Wright, Hurney, the rest of the front office, the coaching staff. They can all get interviewed on the way out and are free to reapply with the new guy in charge.

Says here that Josh Harris is more interested in hiring someone to run the team (nobody says general manager any more) first, and then do the other hirings. I hope that's true.

After Washington's finale against the Dallas Cowboys (4:25 p.m. ET, Fox), Harris is expected to make sweeping changes with coach Ron Rivera and his staff as well as the front office.
Harris, who also owns the Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Devils, said in 2015, "Your most important hire as an owner is your general manager and then your coach."

Rivera fired, and from @rapsheet and many others:

“Sources: The #Commanders are hiring one of the best in sports, luring 2-time NBA Executive of the Year Bob Myers to the NFL to help run their franchise. Bombshell.

A 4-time NBA champ, Myers built the #Warriors dynasty before stepping down to work in TV. Now he lands in the NFL.”

Some smart guys I follow on Twitter love this move. You guys might need to prepare for a non-retread coach.

Today is the start of something special for our franchise. Going from Snyder to Harris is like going from Rosie O'Donnell to Jessica Biel. I have no doubt Harris is going to hire the best people possible to make critical decisions moving forward. And other than the Cardinals, we do have the best draft capitol in the entire league to start our rebuild, as well as a huge cap number to play with. I really hope we can trade down in the first as this 1.2 pick is worth a ton to QB needy teams. And I'd be fine with taking Daniels, Penix, or Nix later in the draft by trading down while still addressing a lot of other needs (OL, TE, LB for starters) And I'd love for Sam to get a chance to compete with whatever QB will draft or bring in as a FA. He was put in a tough spot this year and I still think has a bright future ahead of him. At worst, he's one heck of a backup, but I still think with better coaching, a real offensive line, and a good TE he could be MUCH better than what we saw this year.

Myers, the architect of four championships with the Warriors and a current ESPN NBA analyst, and Spielman, a 30-year NFL front office executive, will work with Harris and limited partners Mitch Rales, Magic Johnson and David Blitzer as part of an advisory committee designed to reshape the Commanders' front office and coaching staff, team officials told ESPN.

In a search that will commence immediately, Myers will take a lead role in identifying and coordinating interviews with candidates for the top football operations and head-coaching jobs, with Spielman set to work closely with him, officials said.

The Commanders' current front office, including GM Martin Mayhew and executive VP of football/player personnel Marty Hurney, will remain on staff through the search process, officials said. The new head of football operations and head coach will determine their long-term futures with the Commanders, team officials told ESPN.

Hearing that they've asked to interview both Lions coordinators (Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn) as well as Rams DC Raheem Morris, who was part of the legendary Shanahan staff in the early Teens

49ers’ assistant GM Adam Peters
Chiefs’ assistant GM Mike Borgonzi
Eagles assistant GM Alec Halaby

For head coaching job
Ravens assoc HC and DL coach Anthony Weaver
Rams’ DC Raheem Morris

Sam Cosmi: “I wanted to run the ball more…We needed more balance…please let’s run the rock.”
And was this Ron's fault or EB's fault? Or both?

Mostly Bienemy's fault.

Good article here:
https://heavy.com/sports/washington-commanders/eric-bieniemy-logan-thomas-ron-rivera/
I put it on both of them. Clearly EB had control of the offense and tried to implement a philosophy that didn't work with this roster. But, Rivera is the head coach. He could have said, "Run more." That's a big enough detail to step in and exercise your authority. In 2006, Gibbs brought in Al Saunders to modernize the offense. In the second half of the season, Gibbs declared their offensive identity was going to be to run the ball; he exercised his authority as the head coach and told Saunders what to do.

I can't think of any way to absolve Ron of a lot of fault here (not saying you are doing that).

I'm not absolving Ron at all. But this year he was more hands-off with his coordinators and I don't know if that was his choice or because he knew or felt Birnemy was here to take over his job. In any event, the players could see they didn't run enough so everyone above them should have been able to see it as well.

I have no idea what this means.

Josh Harris on Eric Bieniemy: "I've enjoyed working with Eric. Obviously he's had success over the years. I spoke to Eric today ... I look forward to, hopefully, having our senior football operations executive in place and then approaching the search with Eric and others."

Is Rivera the only one who has been fired so far?

Yes

DTs Abdullah Anderson and Benning Potoa’e and CB Nick Whiteside were signed to Reserve/Future contracts.

It seems to pretty clearly mean EB will have a chance to interview for the HC job once they hire a GM

My wild-*** guess: It’s highly unlikely EB gets the promotion, Abe there’s no way he stays as OC if they hire an offense-minded coach like Johnson. Only way he stays is if a defense guy like Morris or McDonald wants to keep him on, and he takes it because he thinks molding a young QB gives him his best opportunity to showcase his talents.

Still think the most likely scenario by far is that he walks

The problem with hiring a DC for a HC job is the OC will leave if we win. It's almost a given. That being said still get the best coach possible and worry about that issue later.

EB has not interviewed well or he would have already been a HC. I think he's their ticket to saying they met the Rooney rule. And then he is gone no matter who gets hired. They need a clean slate. He stands in the way of that. Especially if they draft a QB. I'm not overly impressed with Howell's progress late in the year. Which might not be on EB. But are you gonna trust him with Caleb or Drake. I wouldn't.

ETA ... Commanders name is prominent in the press release. Along with 'Take Command' and "Hail to the Commanders" at the end. The name isn't changing. Which honestly I don't care about. Just make us better

I think the point Harris was making when asked about Bienemy. He’s basically saying he’s firing Ron as HC and conducting a search for someone to head up football ops. That person will then make all the decisions regarding the rest of the coaching staff. It’s really all I’ve ever wanted for this team.

Never in my dreams though did I imagine we would get a new owner, GM, HC, and a top QB prospect all at once. It’s breathtaking. And the names being thrown around so far are just incredibly exciting. Peters as GM with Ben Johnson as HC? Talk about improvement. It would be like going from black and white to color T.V.

How do Washington fans feel about Howell? What would the appetite be to trade the #2 to Chicago for Fields and the #9 overall. Washington gets an upgrade at QB and still retain a first rounder.

None. A drop of 7 spots from 1:02 to 1:09 requires a lot more than that.

0% chance I want Fields. ZERO. Actually, that would be a negative trade value for WAS. Statistically he's not much different than Howell. And Howell had a worse OL. while Fields is likely a touch better, who wants someone else's trash?

All of my excitement about this team would instantly evaporate if this happened.
