Hate that deal. Campbell was worth more. Would rather have kept him as a backup for the games McNabb will miss when he is hurt. I'll feel better if we end up with Pike or LeFevour though. Still can't believe Dwyer is still out there. Like to take him too.
He was worth more but nobody was going to pay it unfortunately. The market for vets is really depressed right now. I'd like to snag one of those QB's as well, and Dwyer, and a RT. I'd be content with that. I'm guessing that with multiple picks from the Raiders the Skins still have 4 picks left?
I think a 4th in 2012 is a pretty good deal. I'm happy with that.

SchefterRaiders have added a year to Campbells' contract.

#Redskins yet to confirm but Jason Campbell bound for Oakland. Not buying 2012 draft pick -- no such draft exists yet due to labor issues
Larry Weisman, who works for the SkinsSkins gave up their 5th for Miami's 6th. I wonder what else they got?edit:
The Dolphins gave up picks No. 174 (a sixth) and No. 219 (the pick from the Redskins in JT trade) for No. 163.

Yeah my post was when we thought it was for a 6th. I can stomach a 4th next year. I'm sure ShannAllen would be happy to know that....

Great. We trade down and then use the pick to take a receiving TE. Cooley, Davis, now this guy. A real ####### position of need.

Is he a receiving TE? I just found a highlight reel of him on Youtube and the first several minutes are all of him blocking.
I watch a lot of college football, but I honestly know nothing about this guy. I will say that even though we do have a lot of TE's, you really shouldn't draft for need this late.

from nfl.com:Morris is a tight end that the Redskins will play at fullback. He's a blocking tight end that will be their lead blocker in the zone running scheme that Mike Shanahan implements. He figures to compete with Mike Sellers for playing time.

One thing Shanahan has be very clear about: he want competition at every position. Sellers has had very little competition the last few years and frequently was the only FB on the roster.

I was looking at the graphic on the NFL Network which said he caught 12 TD's last year. Either that number was wrong or he sure seems like a receiving TE?

Yeah, I agree, and from what I read from players and writers his play is not nearly what it used to be. He's been one of those unchallenged guys for a bit too long.As for drafting for need vs. drafting the best player --- at this point in the draft every choice is a crapshoot. If Morris was the best player they saw available, fine, if he's a blocking TE. But if the best player they saw available was a receiving TE, then no, you don't take him at this point in the draft because he'll sit on the bench for the next 5 years and it's a waste of a roster spot.

2 offensive linemen with their last 2 picks:

Cook, Erik C 6'6" 318 New Mexico

Capers, Selvish OT 6'4" 308 West Virginia

Glad to see they listened to me on that last pick.

I am very impressed that your scouting and Shanahan's scouts came to the same conclusions (I hope they saw more than just a cool name).

Gotta love the Capers pick. He came WV as a TE, very athletic. Not overly powerful, but very agile. Sounds more like a LT backup candidate than a RT imo. Watching him play, I'd be surprised if he does not make this team.

Cook is listed at 6-foot-6, 318 pounds and could also find himself playing guard in the NFL. He was a three-year starter for New Mexico and was named first-team All-Mountain West as a senior. Capers is 6-4, 304 pounds and was a three-year starter for the Mountaineers. Capers arrived at West Virginia as a tight end but began lining up as a lineman during his sophomore season. As a senior, he was a second-team All-Big East selection, starting 13 games at right tackle.

At the NFL Scouting Combine in February, Capers ran the 40-yard dash in 5.12 seconds. His arms measured 34 inches long and he bench-pressed 225 pounds a total of 18 times.
LinkCook is probably going to be tried at guard. Capers fell so far in the draft due to a low number of reps in the bench press.

REDSKINS 2010 Draft

1- Trent Williams (OT - Oklahoma)

2- Donovan McNabb (QB - Syracuse)

3- Jeremy Jarmon (DE - Kentucky)

4- Perry Riley (ILB - LSU)

5- Adam Carriker (NT - Nebraska)

6- Dennis Morris (TE/FB - Louisiana Tech)

7- Terrence Austin (WR/KR - UCLA)

7- Erik Cook (OG - New Mexico)

7- Selvish Capers (OT - West Virginia)

We may be down a 3rd/4th for next year based on McNabb's production, but we got a 4th back in 2012 for Campbell. Overall, I love what we've done with this years picks.

"You know, we got a little work to do before we play Dallas, but I guarantee you one thing: I'm looking forward to it just like you are. Again, thanks for being here, thanks for supporting us, and hail to the Redskins."
ShanahanI realize he addressed the fans today, and I know he heard the "We want Dallas" chants, but I don't think he's really going to know what that means, and what "hail to the Redskins" means, until the first home game against Dallas.

Not trading Haynesworth for a second-rounder wasn't surprising. Other teams don't want a malcontent, either. The great part for Washington is they didn't swap an impact lineman for a player with potential. The key now is making peace with Haynesworth. The Redskins were publicly polite, but everyone in the game knew they were trying to peddle a problem and the lineman will arrive for a mandatory minicamp next month more than perturbed. A good coach succeeds through diplomacy, so Shanahan's next move will be scrutinized.

Meanwhile, trading quarterback Jason Campbell to Oakland -- essentially for that bag of balls -- shows just how desperate the Redskins were to avoid any quarterback distractions. Team will surely say a future fourth-rounder beats releasing him for nothing, but that's because they blew any value when they declared they were unwilling to keep him.

That Washington didn't do much else in the draft hurts somewhat. While NFC East rivals added second and third contributors, the Redskins countered that their missing picks were really Donovan McNabb (second round) and Jeremy Jarmon (third). That's really an apples and oranges accounting system. Jarmon appears ill fit for the 3-4 scheme, so that's not a positive comparison anyway.

Another person who thinks Morris is a receiving TE, John Keim.

The Redskins didn't exactly need another pass-catching tight end. But that's what they took in the sixth round. Washington selected tight end/fullback Dennis Morris out of Louisiana Tech, with a pick obtained when they traded their fifth-round choice to Miami. The 6-foot-2, 255-pound Morris caught 38 passes for 623 yards and 12 touchdowns this past season. He also made some good highlight blocks.

Morris said coach Mike Shanahan told him he would play a little tight end, fullback and H-back -- a role he filled in college as well. "I can play all of them," Morris said. "Any of them I'm good at...I'm pretty fast for my size and I can catch a lot. I'm pretty aggressive and I like to block."

How he fits in remains to be seen. The Redskins do not need another pass-catching tight end, but they only have one fullback in Mike Sellers. His size and speed would make him a good special teams player. But Morris could end up on the practice squad.

Put me in the boat that is very happy with the way this draft turned out. As that fan comment shows, Shanallenhan turned 4 picks into 6 and acquired McNabb and Carriker with 2 other picks. I think getting a 2012 pick for Campbell was a little curious, but if that's the best they could do then it's better than nothing. And, out of curiosity, I looked up the last time the 'Skins selected 3 OL in one draft. It was 1992. The last year of Gibbs I. That makes me simultaneously happy and sad. :banned:

Updated list of UDFAs. So far for the 'Skins (as of Saturday night):

Redskins

Logan Paulsen, TE, UCLA

Anderson Russell, FS, Ohio State

Marques Slocum, DT, Eastern Arizona
Another TE. At the moment, I'm guessing Dennis Morris is competition for Sellers, while Paulsen, Sean Ryan and Lee Vickers will be vying for that #3 "Yoder-like" TE spot.Yoder had been making nearly as much as Davis. I'm guessing (again) that Shanallenhan figures they can find a #3 TE who is just as serviceable yet can be paid about 1/3 of what Yoder was getting.

I won't get too carried away on the draft. If it's a typical draft, 1/2 of the lower round draft picks won't be with the team in 3 years. But the Redskins need bodies and they managed to trade down some and pick up more picks in the later rounds. If a couple of gems come out of the lower rounds and Trent Williams delivers, it will be an excellent draft.

Right. I'm not judging the players, as of yet. Just how the picks were used, essentially. Before the draft, 2 of the picks were used to acquire a franchise QB and much needed help on the DL. During the draft, the 4 remaining picks were turned in to 6 players, and an extra/unwanted QB was turned into a future draft pick. Before the draft, things looked bleak from a "preparing for the future" standpoint, especially with everyone reminding us that the 'Skins had "the fewest picks of any team in this draft" and that "100+ players will be gone before the 'Skins can make their second pick". Looking back at what was done with those "4 picks", I think they did about as well as could be reasonably expected. Hence, my current optimism. :)

I've got some "April optimism" going now for Perry Riley, too. Between the "Pick Analysis" at NFL.com and Jene Bramel's first thoughts on his selection, it looks like Riley has the potential to be a Karlos Dansby-type ILB in a 3-4.

Pick Analysis: The Redskins pick up a stout linebacker in Perry Riley to add depth to their linebacker corps. As an instinctive player with good awareness, Riley gives Jim Haslett a versatile player to line at one of the inside linebacker spots in their new 3-4.
LB Perry Riley might be interesting. He's not a great fit in coverage and more of a thumper than his size would suggest. May never project to an every-down role and he's in the mix with HB Blades and Rocky McIntosh for snaps. But there have been indications that McIntosh is on his way out and the new coaches may not see a lot in Blades. There could be more value here than first appears.
He obviously will need some developing, but if he can eventually play inside next to Fletcher, it may mean McIntosh could move outside and be the OLB with coverage duties.

Pete Prisco of CBSSports.com gives the 'Skins draft a B-:

Washington Redskins

Best pick: They landed a franchise tackle in Trent Williams in the first round. He will protect the blind side for a long time.

Questionable move: Passing on taking a quarterback for the future at some point. Donovan McNabb can't play forever.

Third-day gem: Fourth-round pick Perry Riley is a linebacker who could be in the mix inside in the new 3-4 scheme. Riley was an active player at LSU.

Analysis: I like the pick of Williams in the first round and getting McNabb for the second-round pick is stealing. If you factor in the McNabb trade, they had a nice draft.

Grade: B-

No QB is kind of surprising. Very relieved they made that run on o-linemen at the end.
Makes me think Shanny is part of the Cult of Colt.
:blackdot: Or that he believes McNabb has a legitimate 3-5 years left in him. There really wasn't any need to draft an heir apparent this year.
No one they would have picked late would compete for McNabb's spot any time soon. If they took a Pike or LeFevour type of guy he would be directly competing with Colt like Chase Daniels last year. Not taking a QB is an endorsement of Colt in my eyes.

RE: Morris:

Shanahan tells Morris he'll be used at fullback and H-back as well

If you heard about the Redskins' sixth-round pick of Dennis Morris and wondered why the team needed another tight end, you probably weren't alone. But we can provide a bit more clarification.

Morris, a Louisiana Tech product, said on a conference call with reporters this afternoon that Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan told him he can expect to line up as a tight end, fullback and H-back.

"I feel like I can play all of them," Morris said. "I've been playing all of them since I've been in college, so it wouldn't be a change."

Morris said he'd been in contact with the Redskins the past several weeks and though he did not have a pre-draft visit to Redskins Park, he had been talking regularly with the team's tight ends coach, Jon Embree.

Morris was a surprise pick to many because the Redskins didn't have noticeable need at the tight end position and because Morris was somewhat of an unknown entity. He was not invited to the NFL Scouting Combine in February.

"I was disappointed that I didn't get invited, but some of the great tight ends and fullbacks in the league right now, some of them didn't get invited," Morris said. "So I just kept my head up, kept working."

Morris said he's 6-foot-2-inches tall and weighs 255 pounds and feels he can contribute on offense for Washington.

"I'm pretty fast for my size and I can catch a lot. i'm pretty aggressive. I like to block. So I feel like I can help the team out a lot by playing the role of a true tight end, a true fullback, H-back, something like that."

exactly. By the time McNabb is reasonably done, Colt will be what...30, 31? How many QB of the futures do u know kick start their career at that time? The Redskins QB of the future isn't on the roster yet. Sorry Cult of Colt fans
