(Over)Reading into Gruden's remarks, 9/26 Edition

“Sometimes you need to play through some of these ruts,” coach Jay Gruden told reporters after the game. “As a quarterback, he’s the guy that is going to have to lead us in these next few weeks. We need him to pull himself out of it, and keep his head up and move forward to the Seattle Seahawks when we get back.”

Sounds like a coach willing to let his QB get destroyed.....this should be interesting next week.

John Keim wondering about the direction of the team.

John Keim @john_keim · 1m

have seen some horrendous games here under other coaches. But, in marty's year for example, track record suggested things could change.
John Keim @john_keim · 2m
Redskins now being run by people with no track record in their current roles. love. so tougher to know what to expect in future.
John Keim's not known for over-reacting. Questioning what's going wrong and whether the current people have the ability to fix it is legitimate right now.

Good analysis by Keim

In six career starts, he's put up good numbers in three games and not-so-good numbers in the other three. He's a fourth-round pick who is either a young quarterback still developing or a guy who is what he is. Cousins needs to do a lot of things right to play well. When he doesn't, he can't rely on a cannon arm to avoid danger or his legs to bail him out. He knows that; the NFL world knows that.

Cousins can't stare down receivers and get away with it, as the New York Giants, who entered the game feeling they could pressure him into mistakes, said he was doing. Cousins turns the ball over a lot (four interceptions and a lost fumble against the Giants) for a guy who is said to be someone who can manage games well. He gets rid of the ball fast; he also takes chances on throws, and if he's off, it's a pick. "On certain routes, he was staring down his targets," Giants safety Antrel Rolle said.
The Redskins have done a poor job building their secondary. Blame some of it on the salary-cap mess of the past, but that doesn't explain it all. Losing cornerback DeAngelo Hall to a ruptured Achilles tendon hurt quite a bit. Rookie Bashaud Breeland might be a quality starter in the future, but he's not there yet, nor was he expected to be. He'll compete and he'll probably get better -- and he was far from the problem, too.

Here's the problem. A team that wasn't extremely deep to begin with has had its depth tested too much already this season. The Redskins have a defense that provided reasons for hope in the first two games. But it, too, needs a lot of help and can't support a team that turns it over six times. No defense can. But the Redskins allowed 11 out of 16 third downs to be converted Thursday. Nobody made plays. Defenders in coverage consistently lost leverage. The pass rush did not do nearly enough. There are always excuses, but the coverage didn't help the rush and vice versa.

Here's what I don't understand. If you are getting destroyed and want to leave your QB out there for experience, help him out. The defense is pinning it's ears back and are expecting pass. Run the ball. Don't keep doing what the defense is expecting. You are going to lose the game anyway, so at least be productive. Or, if you want to keep throwing the ball, put your back-up in. Don't subject your QB, who is obviously having a bad night, to more adversity.

I don't know if either Cousins or Griffin is a long term solution. But I do know it's tough to evaluate them when the defense and special teams are this bad.

Really, does it even matter when the D and ST are this awful? Once you are behind that much in the NFL that much your QB is going to get annihilated and their DBs are going to sit on routes all night. The problem is the same it's been for a while...the D and ST suck. Other than Hatcher and Kerrigan, we don't have another D player even capable of starting for the Giants. Orakpo has checked out for the season. Others like Baker and Jackson show flashes but can't sustain a high level of play. Riley, Clark and Merriweather wouldn't have jobs if the Skins cut them.

Running the ball is the only hope to keep our D off the field. Morris averages 4.5 yards per rush. Helu average 5.3. Redd average 5.1. But Gruden is not going to call games that way, and part of me isn't that mad at him for it. The best teams in the league are pass happy. But given how bad the D is I think a run first offense would probably result in closer games. Unfortunately he's called 151 passes to 110 rushes, so only 42% runs...and several of those runs were QB scrambles. Plus the number is actually MORE lopsided in the first half. Add to that the poor pass blocking of the right side of the OL and it's a recipe for poor QB play.

Eli interview postgame. He said that the defensive packages they saw were "basic" and they knew what to expect. No surprises. smh
This is not unusual for the Thursday night games. Everyone says they use a pretty vanilla package on offense and defense due to a lack of preparation time. That is one reason the NFL has been trying to put mostly games between teams in the same division, since they are more familiar with each other and can just try to modify previous game plans.

It seems like there are plenty of good teams that lean run heavy (Seattle, SF past few years, Philly, SD, New England, etc.) but it also looks like you need a good defense (other than Philly) to do so, which is a huge problem.

I think Kirk has been labeled a "game manager" by many (in general, not in here) due to him seeming so bland and vanilla compared to RG3's skillset, but he actually looks like way more of a "gunslinger" type passer than RG3 to me - for better or worse, he will take riskier throws and will throw to a spot instead of needing to see the receiver get open the way RG3 seems to need at times.

Couldn't agree more that they looked completely out of it pretty early on, and that's very disheartening to see after the terrible end to last season. Also agree that Haslett can GTFO.

Also, just posting this because I didn't see it in here yet -

Part that jumped out to me -

It all depends on how Cousins plays over the next five or six weeks, and NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport says the Redskins' eyes are "wide open" to Cousins taking the job.

"They do concede that Robert Griffin III is the better overall player and certainly more talented," Rapoport said on NFL Total Access Kickoff Thursday. "The thought is that Cousins might be a better fit for this system."
Obviously some more games like last night and it's irrelevant, but I just thought it was interesting. Not to say Griffin lacks room for improvement, but I personally think it's sub-par coaching to know that one player is better than the other and not try to adjust your system, but that seems pretty common in the NFL.

Cousins is what he is...he's not a savior riding in on a white horse to save the day. There is a reason dropped to 4th round. Upstanding individual with the right attitude, but limited on the field.

We will be picking high in the draft...there will be a game or two that we will be fooled into thinking we are better than we are (re: Jax), but overall we are not there.

Great coaches can design different game plans for different talents. To wit: John Fox went to the playoffs and won a playoff game with Tim Tebow, then turned around and went to the Super Bowl with Peyton Manning. There are other examples, but your point is well taken...you need to design your offense and defense to the talent that you have.

How do you let another player just take the ball away from you? Especially as a TE. There were many plays that you could say started the downward spiral, but this one stuck out to me.

Yeah, that's pretty much the football equivalent of "I palmed your face, pushed you down, and took your lunch money" on the playground.

Not good.

Don't forget that apparently the Keenan Robinson was hit by a drunk driver as he was leaving for Fed Ex Field. Not certain if it was the drunk was from the game but it wouldn't surprise me.

The good thing about richie rich selling skunky beer is that most of the Skin fans are so wasted beforehand they wouldn't know the difference

Without looking it up, do you know the last divisional win the Redskins have had?

Sorry if already posted.....

That is dumb IMO. If Gruden is this offensive guru, he should be able to make a system that gets the better overall and more talented player in the position to succeed. Why should we have to deal with Cousins just because he's a better fit despite being a turnover fountain.

* since I'm responding in order of reading, it looks like several have echoed my opinion. Dumb!

During film sessions on Wednesday, and during the early defensive stands of Thursday's blowout win over the Redskins, there was one player repeatedly pulling his teammates aside to inform them of Kirk Cousins' penchant to telegraph passes.

Jason Pierre-Paul was not previously viewed by his teammates as a mainstay in the film room. But over the last week, he began picking up on some of Cousins' mannerisms and couldn't help himself.

"JPP even saw it, he told us that (Cousins) was staring down his receivers," Prince Amukamara said on Thursday night, delivering a bittersweet complement.

And Eli said nothing the Skins defense did surprised the Giants.

Can't anyone on this team coach?

Shanny must still be holding Haslett back again...

So on the plus side this is one sunday that we cant lose! We also get plenty of time to prep for Seattle.

Whats Reeds status? Is he close to coming back at all?

Sean Taylor A Football Life is Friday night at 9. And I don't have the NFL Network. :(
DC Sports Bog has a nice write up on the program, tho some stuff at the following link could be considered a spoiler for the show.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/dc-sports-bog/wp/2014/09/24/nfl-networks-sean-taylor-film-attempts-to-provide-a-full-picture-of-seans-life/
I was able to catch this episode and it was a very good production, IMO. Keim also shares some thoughts on the program. Here a couple of things he mentioned that stood out to me, from the on-field perspective (my emphasis added):

  • As someone who loves the strategy of the game and how players are deployed, watching Taylor was amazing -- and it would have been even more fun to watch now that the All-22 film is available. "The time and distance he could cover was amazing," Williams said in the show. Yes, it was. The Skins would align him in the slot on one side and have him drop to the deep half on the other side -- nobody does that.
  • All the talk about Taylor's passion for the game, from then-Redskins coach Joe Gibbs in particular, is exactly what people said before his death. Some guys were just born to play football. The way Taylor practiced set him apart, though I didn’t realize how much extra effort he put into working out -- running home from the facility, 100-yard sprints before practice. He was even more about football than I realized.

Forget the on field stuff, that beer story is huge. He should be forced to sell the team for that, imo.

I still don't understand what happened Thursday night. What an awful performance all the way around. I can't even imagine the carnage we'll see next Monday night against Seattle.

Surprise surprise L. Landry pop'd for PEDs...4 game suspension. I'm sure everything 'Skins fan is shocked with this news...LOL

It's absolutely crazy that he's gotten away with it this long...
So is there a list of approved substances players can take, or can they take anything that isnt specifically banned?
I'm pretty sure there is a list of banned substances and you can take anything else...can anyone else confirm?

I guess they are changing it now though...not sure how.

Yet these same people will protect the rights of the Westboro Baptists nutsoids to yell vulgar things at funerals. This country is seriousy ####ed up.

Various things from PFT.

The Redskins saw their pass defense torn apart by the Giants last week and they’ve made a move in hopes of shoring up their secondary on Monday.

PFT has learned, via a league source, that the team has signed safety Jamarca Sanford. Sanford started 41 games in Minnesota over the past three seasons, recording 216 tackles, two interceptions and seven forced fumbles for the Vikings. He was placed on injured reserve by the Vikings at the end of the preseason and then released off of IR early in September.
Washington has given up nine touchdown passes in the first four games, so there’s room for improvement and likely a chance for Sanford to move into a prominent position if the team believes he can provide it.
The Redskins announced that they have signed Sanford and added that cornerback Richard Crawford will also be added to the roster.
Crawford looked totally lost this preseason.

This is 2013 pass defense all over again.

Just a matter of time now.
Makes no sense to me. And where does it stop?

If we're going to change everything in this country that a small minority are offended by, we're screwed.
