Yeah, my main gripe with the in-the-pocket Griffin is that he doesn't buy time within the pocket very well. When pressure is coming, it seems like he thinks he needs to buy himself several more seconds rather than 0.5 more seconds. Sometimes, all you need is another half second to make a play.

As for him running, I think I've been pretty clear that I think it's ridiculous for him NOT to run some. It's such a good weapon and he's so good at the zone read. They ran zone read once against Houston. It was the 3rd and 1 on the first drive and Watt stuffed Morris. I thought the HOU end had clearly commited to Morris early enough for Griffin to pull it back and easily pick up the first down, but he let Morris have the ball and he was stuffed. As an aside, it also seemed like a poorly designed blocking scheme there. One idea with the zone read is to leave the end unblocked to give you an extra blocker for the RB, yet they didn't use an extra blocker on Watt and he, of course, whipped Chester.

I think RGIIIs bigger problem than not sliding left and right to buy time (which I do agree is a problem) is that he's not just going back, making a decisive choice, and getting the ball out of his hands. Offenses now a days do not have to be designed so QB has a ton of time in the pocket. He's throwing the darn thing less than 10 yards in the air most of the time. So, go back, make the read, get rid of it QUICKLY and move to the next play. After you are successful with that and the run game for a while, and you bring the defense up, then perhaps roll him out and try to hit a long one. I really don't buy the fact that he needs to sit back there a long time and buy a bunch of time. Most of the time, you see good QBs going back and QUICKLY getting rid of it.

I think I saw Hatcher in that spot during the HOU game a few times too. Regardless, Baker is the best bet to fill that and if Jenkins is motivated and is anything close two the 2 yrs ago guy...we might alright for the time being. Not ideal, but disaster either.

Here's Keim with some more details about Baker. I don't think I'm all that worried about him being the starting NT. What I'm most worried about now is the depth, or extreme lack thereof. Baker can't/won't play every snap, so who fills in on the interior when he's out?

He prefers nose tackle: At 6-foot-2, 335 pounds, Baker is well suited to playing inside. But it's also his more natural position, the one he was playing before moving to end. They put him out there because he was starting to play well and they wanted him on the field. Now he returns inside.

The transition will be easier than at end: Because Baker has played this spot in the past, there isn't as much to learn. Cofield, for example, had never played nose before joining the Washington Redskins in 2011 so he had to learn new blocking angles and read the offense from a new spot. That's not the case with Baker.

if tony romo or Eli manning was our QB this year we'd be winning at least 10 games. And that to me seems unarguable. The rg3 experiment is close to over if he can't get it together soon.

That's pretty much what he did most of the game vs Houston. Dropped back and fired one out to Garcon, DJax, etc. Lots of short and decisive throws mixed in with some others. Gruden needs to get more creative with moving his launch point as clearly the roll out/playaction stuff is being sat on by the weakside defenders.

On this play, if Griffin had kept the ball, he would have had a decent gain. I thought they lined up in the pistol, but it was a designed run for Morris and that there was no zone read option for Griffin.

Last year and during the off season, Cooley actually thought the Redskins should move Baker to NT and Cofield to DE. Obviously the previous and current coaching staffs don't see it that way.

...don't get me wrong, this really, really sucks for Griff, and I have a great deal of compassion for him.

But from a technical standpoint, and in terms of moving forward and winning games, there are reasons for optimism.

Depth is quickly evaporating. Once the depth become starters, you lose your depth. It works well in a game, but is tough when that depth has to carry you for several weeks.

It's my fault guys, I'm sorry. I drafted RG3 in two redrafts this year.

Bobby is done. Cousins is capable but does not have the upside. Time will tell though.

But again, I'm sorry.

 
You know, when I heard RGIII was hurt, a vision of the "Welcome to Virginia" sign flashed in my mind. Now it all makes sense.

While happy for the win just feel sick about RG3. He started off looking so good, was sliding, had the deep ball working, and then bam, possible season ending injury. :(

tough injury for rg3. backups saved the day. paul, kirk, even roberts. home team rebounded well today.

I feel the same way. But it's a team game, and I'm more than happy with the way they responded. They were already without their starting TE. They lost their starting QB and a starting WR early this game. Those 3 guys were supposed to be a huge part of the hoped-for resurgence of their offense, and they're all gone 6 quarters into the season. Yet the team didn't blip when Griffin and Jackson went out today, and so far Reed hasn't been missed much either. The backups stepped in and played pretty well. Anyone here glad Ryan Grant and Andre Roberts are on the team? I sure as hell am. Anyone else surprised and happy that Niles Paul is doing more at TE than dropping balls? I sure as hell am. I don't know who went in for Lauvao or how he played but maybe someone could fill us in on that. But with 3 critical players out on offense the Skins kept clicking. And there are 4 reasons why:

1. Cousins didn't turn the ball over, as he's prone to do.

2. The Skins ran the ball 38 times if I counted correctly. They need over 30 runs every game to have chances to win.

3. The Jaguars kept giving the ball back due to their inept offense.

4. The replacements played pretty well in place of the starters.

I liked this game. I think we all know that against a high-caliber team the Skins might have gotten beat, even beat solidly. So this was a good game in which to have the injuries, and get the backups a lot of game time.

Rambo can't tackle worth ####, still. Their safeties are horrible and the Eagles know it. Really, really liked the push from the middle of the d-line. It opened up opportunities for sacks. I think Baker may be better than Cofield, even if less skilled. Keenan Robinson already looks like a good linebacker. Not average --- good. Amerson looks good. Roberts looks good. No blocks or turnovers or awful mistakes from the special teams was nice -- enjoy this moment.

They won. Broke a long losing streak. Do you realize how long it's been since they won?

Every coach likes him. Shanahan said he was the next Shannon Sharpe. He just never actually lives up to that reputation because he generally has hands issues and consistency issues. Great ST's player and a hard worker, but not a true receiving threat until the past couple weeks (and even last week he made himself fumble in the red zone). Hence the "wtf".

 
According to Rotoworld Skins are "hoping" for a RG3 return in 4-5 weeks.

I'll believe it when I see it. I will be shocked if he plays again this year. And even if he's not out for the year, if Cousins plays well then the tired QB controversy narrative will actually be legit at that point.

Aw well, can only take it a week at a time at this point and hope Cousins continues to play well and the O-line protects. The defense has really played pretty well the first 2 weeks but we have to remember its come against Fitzpatrick and Henne.

And not that anyone cares but this is why I hate mixing my real NFL feelings with fantasy. Skins win in a blowout and I'm bummed all day b/c I started Bobby in 2 leagues. I have no doubt that he was about to put up a monster FF game today. Now I'll likely be forced to start Cousins in at least one. My apologies in advance.

I'm sure they are hoping that, but not sure that hope is based on anything until there's an MRI. Then again, I know nothing and did not sleep at a Holiday Inn last night.

Yeah, it's like when Bradford went down in pre-season and they were hoping/thinking it wasnt serious. And then he was done. Only this had all the feel of a season ender from the time he laid on the sideline.

No point in speculating until the MRI but figured I would share.
