***Official*** Washington Redskins 2014 Thread (In-Season) (1 Viewer)

John Keim @john_keim · 23m 23 minutes ago

Redskins have Santana moss active today. No perry Riley or Aldrick Robinson
Will Compton's starting in place of Riley. Who knows? Compton might win the starting job with an adequate performance. Riley's been awful this year.

Come to think of it, what has Aldrick Robinson done this year? He's always big in preseason, but I don't recall him doing much this regular season. Moss might be active more often.

The coach felt the need to name a new captain after the previous captain's were laughing and yucking it up in the locker room after a loss? Seems pretty clear cut unless I am missing something.
That's the way I see it also.

From John Keim

The Cardinals have blitzed 47.3 percent of the time on quarterback dropbacks, with twice as many five-man pressures (54) as six or more. Having two corners who can play man coverage such as Patrick Peterson and Antonio Cromartie enable the Cards to be aggressive.

Here’s another factor: When the Cardinals only send four rushers (83 times), opposing quarterbacks have feasted. They’re completing 71.1 pecent of their throws with five touchdowns and two interceptions in those situations for a 103.8 passer rating. Only two teams -- Oakland and St. Louis -- have used fewer four-man rushes than the Cardinals.

But it’s not as if the blitz is always successful. When they send five rushers, quarterbacks have completed 66 percent of their throws for 334 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions (and only two sacks). When they have sent six or more (27 times), quarterbacks have completed 16-of-27 passes for 262 yards, one touchdown and one interception. The Cardinals have no sacks out of this look.

Their best success comes when they blitz at least one defensive back. In that situation, opposing quarterbacks have completed 9-of-26 passes and average only 4.69 yards per attempt for a 31.2 passer rating. The Cardinals have intercepted two passes out of this look, with one sack.

Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins has completed 27-of-49 passes for 323 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions for a 72.1 passer rating against a blitz. Three of his four sacks have come vs. the blitz.

This is potentially a pretty big 2nd half coming up. I mean, I don't really think this team is headed for the playoffs, but a win here at least helps keep things respectable. Next 4 weeks are Titans, Cowboys, Vikings, and Buccaneers, with Griffin possible returning for Tampa. Tennessee, Minnesota, and Tampa are pretty awful. (Yeah, I realize we can be pretty close to awful, too.)

A win today could conceivably lead to a 5-5 record after the Buccaneers game. Of course, not going to be surprised if they are 3-7, even with a W today.

I like dreaming. It's more fun than just assuming we'll have a top 5 pick next year.

Oh well. Big 2nd half and this is what we get.

This is Moral Victory #3, right? Philly, Seattle, and now on the road in Arizona. Where's that column in the standings?

"felt rushed"

"kind of a congested area" "a tough deal"

"didn't see the defender"

Cousin's reasons for the 3 INT's

Gruden sounded completely disgusted postgame. Talked only about making plays and about turnovers. Talked about one INT and said the ball was to come out when the WR took his first step "and I don't know, for whatever reason, it took way too long".

Hey fatness - how many more weeks do you think Cousins has? Does he have any chance of finishing out the season? Or has the damage already been done?

I think he'll start until Griffin is back and healthy and has practiced some I don't know when that will be. dgreen mentioned week 11, which seems like a decent guess.

I don't know if there's any thought of starting McCoy or not. They can't let Cousins keep doing this though. He's taking away their chances to win competitive games, single-handedly. Gruden sounded totally disgusted by the INT's. The players were more muted about it but the "we just can't turn it over this much" is out in the open in the locker room now.

whoa

There were a lot of positives written about coach Jay Gruden during the summer and the new vibe/energy he brought. That’s not to be confused with changing the culture, however. To do so you must win. He now faces a legitimate test of leadership and his abilities as a coach. The Redskins have now lost 13 of their past 14 games dating to 2013. Yes, it's a new coach and a new season. But it doesn't feel that way.

The guy had a nice game going the 3rd quarter. It's like he just implodes all of a sudden. When the interceptions come, they come in bunches.

Hopefully he can clean up his act and eliminate the mistakes. I mean, he still threw for 354 against a very good defense on the road. The potential is there.

Did you hear Rick “Doc” Walker on ESPN 980 just after Cousins’ 2nd interception? He was DEFINITELY screaming. His voice was audibly trembling. Veins were probably popping out of his head.

“ABSOLUTELY PATHETIC”, Walker sneered, the disgust clearly evident in his voice.

“THEY REGROUP EVERY WEEK!”, Sonny Jurgenson wailed in utter frustration, in response to to idea that there is something the Redskins can do to fix this during the coming days.

“I bet you don’t hear a peep in that locker room”, Chris Cooley added to complete the trifecta of dismal dismissal.

To me he seems like David Carr.

In the fourth quarter alone, the Redskins lost a fumble (on what appeared to be a bad call that wasnt overturned; more on that later), threw three interceptions and dropped a potential pick.

Ryan Clark absolutely devastating Jason Reid on Twitter. Just killing him. The whole thing is awkward but damn he's taking it to him.
Part of that back-and-forth included Clark saying Reid had to be restrained in some kind of altercation. Today, this tweet:

TKextremeskins@TKextremeskins

Most entertaining part of today's game happened in the press box. Mike Jones of the WP tried to go at Tony Wylie & was held back by JReid. Something about them (the WP guys) getting injury updates off of Redskins.com or the team twitter before they're announced in the press box ten seconds later.

While I would have no issue at someone going after that stooge butt sniffer Wylie, you should already know if you are the Washington Post that the Skins want no business with you. Between Mike Wise and the Jason Reid columns, I am surprised they haven't tried to out right ban the WP

But all week it has been "blame the media" by Ryan Clark and others and well as you long as you stink on the field then just shut up and take it

Props to my guy @MikeJonesWaPo. He called the current quarterback situation the day Griffin went down.
Way to go, Mike Jones. And props to my guy @fatness. He also called it. And so did several other Average Joe Fans. You know who didn't call it? Over-excited fantasy football players who badly wanted Cousins to be awesome. And my mom. She, too, failed to call this one.

"I said all preseason that Cousins was better."

"OK, great, coach mom. You've got an eye for talent."

Griffin has always been visibly better than Cousins on the NFL field. 2 years ago Cousins became a sudden darling due to a couple good performances. But people who pimped those performances into "see, he's a better starter" did so while never mentioning Griffin's performances that same year, when he set rookie records. It was a good offense, that worked.

Last year Griffin had no business starting but he did, and effectively had his training camp and preseason during the NFL season. It was a noticeable step back from his performance the year before, naturally. Cousins then got his chance, starting the last 3 games. And at the end of the year it was clear, for the second straight year, that Griffin was better on an NFL field.

This year Cousins has an even bigger chance to show he's an NFL starter, that he's Griffin's equal or better. And he's made a god-awful mess of it with his incessant turnovers and his "start OK then get worse" performances that always result in losses.

This year the team is ####ed. They need to run the offense from 2 years ago (for the most part), but that offense is no longer available to them because no other team believes the Redskin passing game can beat them, and their game plan is always to stop the Redskin running game. Which leaves it in the hands of Cousins. Which leaves the team ####ed.

Today in the 4th quarter I actually wondered if Tim Tebow could do better.

I do not think McCoy can be worse than Cousins right now. I think the team desperately needs a win, and the Titans are coming up. They have already lost 3 winnable games this year --- Houston because of the ultra-conservative game plan, the Eagles because of bad defense and a Cousins turnover, and the Cardinals due directly to Cousins turnovers. How long can Gruden stick with Cousins without losing the team?

So the Redskins are upset because the big local newspaper's reporters...............report.

Yeah Dan, that's a big problem, you're right. Sic the Navajos on them.

It matters that there are still 10 games left and the season is over.

We know what we have: Another season of despair over the NFL team in Washington that will surely not lead to the postseason. Frustrated young guns (“Last year, being able to win the division, and now being on the opposite end on a different team,” DeSean Jackson said), peeved old heads (“We can’t talk about not making the playoffs right now; we need to win a damn game,” Kedric Golston said), and the reality they’re already off the rails.

But when the extension of Gruden on the field keeps combusting like Cousins does in these second halves when the pressure is turned up, when the quarterback he has often praised for being able to implement his philosophy and game plan as if Gruden was never talking about a backup, well, there are lack-of-execution issues (2 of 10 on third-down conversions, 72 scant rushing yards) that go right back to the man preparing the team.

Funny thing about making the call on Cousins. Everyone except Redskins fans said he's the better QB. He's better for the system, etc. He's better at nothing except turning the ball over and maybe sliding, lol.

As bad as the offense looks....can you imagine what a healthy RG3 MIGHT be able to do with Reed, DeSean, and Garçon in the passing game? And Roberts flat out KILLED the team yesterday....

Yes.

And I can give Roberts some slack for yesterday. He's played quite well this year.

Seasons end so early.................................
Not even the end of October and we are already stuck with only our fantasy teams to root for. Sounds like the last 18/20 years of my life. Being a fan of this team has become long trip into the Inferno. My kids ask me why I continue to watch. I can't even make up a reason anymore.

I use the excuse "what if I don't watch and they get it right?". That only happens a few times a year, don't want to miss 'em

@john_keim: Griffin will start individual drills next week. Will try to get him some team reps possibly next week

It's easy to forget with how bad they've been that Garcon/D Jax/Roberts has to be one of the better groups of receivers in the league. Hopefully the Skins get a chance to take advantage of that before they are all retired/moved on.

@JGWhiteAP: Yesterday was 1st game in his career that Alfred Morris didn't rush for a 1st down. #Redskins

@JGWhiteAP: Yesterday was also 1st game in Alfred Morris' career w/o a double-digit-yard run. (Longest was 9 yds). #Redskins

I hope they don't panic and rush RG3 back. The season is already a lost cause. Yes, I want RG3 to get some work. But at this point, there is absolutely zero reason to rush him back and risk further injury. Let him fully heal, then play a few games at the end of the year just to get some work.

On a depressing rainy day after another depressing loss, let's have some fun. Let's look at what "experts" were saying about Cousins when he replaced Griffin in the Jacksonville game.

“His touch on the ball — he took a little bit off of a few balls, he squeezed it into some really tight spots, [and] you could see him throw the fastball yesterday,” Joe Theismann said on 106.7 The Fan Monday morning, when asked about Kirk Cousins. “What was on display yesterday from Kirk Cousins was the variety of type of throws, [and] he can make every one of them very accurate. And it’s almost like Kirk played so well against Jacksonville when he went in, he played so well through this football game, when he misses a throw it’s almost like LeBron missing a jump shot. It’s like oh, ‘How did that happen?’“I mean, he’s been so good I thought, and so accurate, and moves the ballclub [so well], that when a throw does get away from him a little bit, and it is a little high or a little outside or a little behind, you’re somewhat surprised, because he sets the table so high."
:lmao:

Expert #2

“This isn’t Kirk Cousins’s job to win,” former Steelers coach Bill Cowher said before the Redskins faced the Giants in late September. “Right now, this is Kirk Cousins’s job to lose. He isn’t a backup like he talked about. Right now, he is the starter.

“He’s putting together a profile right now, a résumé of these next seven weeks that will make the decision easy for the Redskins: either they sign him to a contract or they’re still looking for the quarterback of the future. We’re seeing it unfold before our eyes — the future of Kirk Cousins and the Redskins.”
Cousins finished the night with with four interceptions as the Redskins lost, 45-14.

Back to Expert #1

“Let’s stop beating around the bush,” Theismann said in happier times, by which we mean August. “Kirk Cousins has played much better at the quarterback position than Robert Griffin III has. Now, Robert is learning to work out of a pocket. He doesn’t look as smooth or as comfortable throwing the football. I mean, your eyes will tell you everything you need to know.”
:lmao:

Expert #3

In his weekly appearance on my show, the Sports Reporters on Sportstalk 570, Mel Kiper suggested that the Robert Griffin III era may have already ended. Mel said that if Kirk Cousins is good, maybe comparable to the level that Andy Dalton has played at in Cincinnati, that Griffin may never regain the starting quarterback job.
Stick to the draft, Mel. :lmao:

Rather than washing his hands of a uniquely talented quarterback who just two years ago authored the best rookie quarterback season in NFL history, Gruden was resigned to taking a few early-season lumps as he transformed Griffin into a legitimate pocket passer. Now that Cousins is doing his best Andy Dalton impression in Griffin's stead, Gruden can concentrate on winning games as opposed to holding his quarterback's hand through an arduous developmental phase.

"I feel like we can win any game with Kirk Cousins," Gruden said after Sunday's win over the Jags. "Kirk is a special guy. He started four games last year and didn't have great success, but obviously has a skill set that I feel like is very much suited for what we do. He can handle it mentally, and obviously, physically. I feel that he can make every throw in the book and we are going to move forward with Kirk."
There's one expert I can't laugh at. He got it wrong, and he has more say than any of the other experts.

Gruden's looking at changing the lineup, but not changing the starting QB.

That might be the most depressing things I've heard in awhile. "Mr. Johnson, you have cancer. Here's an antibiotic for your infected cut, and let's clean out that ear wax while you're here."
