Leonard Hankerson activated, with Chase Minnifield cut and then signed to PS.
Rostering 7 WRs seems like a lot.

No harm, though, since they were able to get back the guy they cut.
I honestly don't understand the need for 7 WRs. How often do we even have 4 out there at a time? And why is Santana Moss even on this team? Don't get me wrong, I like Moss, but he offers nothing to this team and that spot could be used for an OL, DB or DL spot.

Don't you wish we had a coach who could say this, wasn't lying, and knew what to do with personnel?

"I know this, I know I control the roster. And I think you guys can say first-hand, I don’t talk to anybody. So whoever says they have a source in terms of what’s gonna go on with roster maneuvers or people going up and people going down, they never talked to the right person because that comes from me"

All Kelly was doing, was standing up for his QB. That's all Gruden did, as well. Not sure why a skewed comparison needs to be attempted.

Serious question regarding the ramped up negativity towards Gruden: are you simply projecting disdain for ownership/management down to Gruden or do you believe that Gruden has already proved he can't be a successful NFL head coach (which is what your post implies) or, "other"?

Personally, I'm willing to forgive mistakes/missteps by a new coach for at least a calendar year. If he doesn't learn/improve from his mistakes, so be it. But I can't see how that has possibly been established yet.

Or, if your issues are with the personnel decisions being made, can we at least aim those at the correct parties? It's no secret that Gruden wasn't hired to be the personnel guy, so there's no reason to expect he has any responsibility for personnel moves.

I'm stating what mistakes I think Gruden's making --- like too much public criticism of players, too little control over the locker room behavior, too much passing and Helu on the field, bad playcalling at times (Houston game and second half of Minnesota game come to mind), sticking too long with a QB who was actively losing games (Cousins) when there was a satisfactory backup (McCoy), and public praise for a defensive coordinator who's doing a bad job at the same time that the HC is criticizing a good defensive player (Hatcher).

I think it's realistic to give a coach a year to learn the ropes and learn from his mistakes. I think it would be silly not to talk about mistakes we think he makes during the course of that year, though.

Back to my question. Kelly apparently is pretty good with personnel, and apparently has control of personnel. Wouldn't it be nice if we had that in Washington?

 Would it be nice to have Kelly? Probably. But that has little to do (for me) with how many hats he wears, and everything to do with his NFL resume, to date. For all I know, fans of other teams will be looking at Gruden next season and wishing they had someone like him as their teams coach.

Having control of the personnel and being good with it once it's acquired doesn't only work as either a one-person or a two-person job. There are plenty of examples of it being successful, and failing, both ways.

Remaining schedule

at Indianapolis

St. Louis

Feel free to make predictions.

Keim predicted before the season they'd end up 7-9. Now he's saying 6-10 (or 5-11, depending on how you read his column). It's a pretty good column.

http://espn.go.com/blog/washington-redskins/post/_/id/12708/revised-prediction-washington-redskins

The drop from my preseason prediction to the revised one is not steep. But it also means the season is not going in the direction the Redskins hoped it would. It's tough to see a repeat of 2012, going from 3-6 to 10-6. There's a reason it was noteworthy that year -- it doesn't happen often.

But really, this is about establishing who they are as an organization and how they want to define themselves on the field. There's just been too much inconsistency: in the run game, defensively, at quarterback. They don't make enough winning plays, seem to be too loose and have young players enduring growing pains. Their turnover margin of minus-9 would have to be reversed to make a run. In 2012, it was at plus-7 before they went on the run.
I'll be honest: I should have downgraded by two wins. But for some reason, I dropped them only to 6-10. Must be in a good mood.

And he did expand on what he meant by "too loose".

in an article this week u said team need 1-2 "take charge" leaders next yr. What do u see this yr that leads to that
Just a team that is ultra-loose and keeps losing. It’s one thing to be that way when you win; it’s part of your success, no doubt. But when a team is losing you examine all reasons why. It’s not like they have horrible leaders. But they lack a London Fletcher, a guy so respected in the overall defensive meeting room that his voice was listened above all, including coaches. They were more boisterous than necessary after losing to the Seattle Seahawks. It’s not everyone, mind you. But enough guys that it makes you wonder. Last week, they were very loose in the locker room and during practice, with music blaring during individual drills, some players would do a little dancing. Again, it's fine if you win. I also see the defense having young guys in key spots who aren’t ready to lead or older vets in key spots who are wise and lead by example, but who no longer play to a certain level. It adds up.

Four good posts at http://hail22.com of both the good and bad from Griffin last Sunday.
Those are good, thanks. Interesting stuff.

I had to chuckle (instead of cry) when I read these:

"But Helu fails to maintain his block,"

"Chris Chester is beaten off the snap but Helu picks up the block, at least initially. Chester leaves the block to Helu, who also gets beaten and allows the pressure to reach the backfield"

"Running back Roy Helu has to pick up the blitz off the edge. Just before Roberts breaks to the sideline, Helu losses control of his block."

"By that time, left guard Shawn Lauvao gets driven back into Griffin."
I did notice during the game that Morris was playing in more of the obvious passing downs. It looked like they were not happy with Helu's pass blocking.

They really have some bad blockers on offense. No TE who blocks well --- Paulsen is known as the blocking TE but if you watch him he isn't so good. They pull their best blocking RB in passing situations and Helu, a bad blocker, goes in. Chester gets pushed around, Lauvao gets pushed around even more, and Polumbus was so bad he's benched. The only way for this to be an effective O-line is to keep them on the move a lot.

As for their record from here out they should win 2. I think they'll pull one more out, so I'll say 3-4. The Colts game should be pretty ugly.

Another thought: Polumbus has been inactive the past two weeks. So not only is Compton now the starter, but Morgan Moses, who looked completely lost earlier in the year, has passed Polumbus on the depth chart. Of course Moses may have improved, but it is clear they don't want to see Polumbus on the field.

Thank god. I don't want to see him either. If Compton and Moses aren't growing or worthy of starting, I want to know or at least have an idea by the end of the season, so that we inevitably know what to do when we're sitting there at 6th overall or something and a great OT prospect is there.

griffin has been sacked 9 times with 68 pass attempts

Cousins was sacked 8 times with over 160 pass attempts.

Not sure how to read this. Maybe that's why cousins had so many interceptions. But rg3 number seems very, very high. Even if the blocking stinks.

What a great weekend of football, no headache or toying with my emotions. Beware, we usually lose the games we are supposed to win and win the games we are supposed to lose. We should beat TB and for some reason that scares the crap out of me.

Glennon is pretty bad, but we'll totally forget to cover Jackson or Evans on a few plays and he'll post some good numbers. Opposing teams have 18 pass TDs and only 3 INT against the Redskins.

The offense should be able to sniff 30 against a bad TB defense, but something will happen to keep us closer to 20.

Football Outsiders has the offense ranked 15th and the defense 17th. TB is 31st on O and 28th on D.

Of course special teams always has a chance to derail something.

So, while I'd like to think a comfortable win is possible, I'll go with a 21-17 W.

It's actually McCown now.

RG3 does hold onto the ball too long, but sometimes that results in a big play off a scramble and sometimes it results in a sack.

You're right on Cousins though, everyone praised him for getting rid of the ball quickly, yet when he did it usually resulted in an INT.

If you look at some of the "scrambling" QBs, they all have pretty high sack totals:

1. Kaepernick

2. Newton

5. Roethlisberger

9. Rodgers

9. Tannehill

12. Wilson

Yeah, not sure if some of the other guys are criticized for their sacks, but Griffin has historically been sacked less than others who are considered to be really good QBs. Also, his inflated sack numbers this season could be more of a small sample size, mostly against Houston and Minnesota. Minnesota is one of the top teams in the league at sacking opposing QBs. I was surprised that Houston is fairly average, but I think we all agree they have at least one guy who can give any OL/QB problems.

I thought in the last game, Griffin was staying in the pocket more and not taking off as much. That is an encouraging sign. In the past, we would take off, almost always to the right or back, at the first sign of any pressure.

Now if the Redskins want to minimize the number of hits on Griffin, they may want an OL that pass blocks better.

I posted a link earlier that had a blog post by Mark Bullock analyzing each of Griffin's sacks against Minnesota. I think on pretty much every one, Mark says something like "While he didn't get good protection, he could have avoided the sack by quickly hitting so-and-so in the flat." My main problem with that analysis is that we don't know what the goal of those particular plays was. Maybe all week they talked about waiting for a certain person to break open? If Griffin makes a read that he thinks will lead to Jackson being open downfield, then he's going to wait for it. If he can't get an extra second of protection, I'm not sure the sack is his fault. Of course, maybe they worked on getting the ball out quickly to the guy in the flat on these plays if they faced a blitz. Also, I think Gruden did say some of the sacks were on Griffin, so that indicates he probably should not have waited for a particular route on some of those.

I think it's hard to say what should and shouldn't happen even with access to the All 22. Either way, though, he needs to do better. I'll gladly take a few sacks in exchange for some huge plays, but you have to pick your moments I guess.

Good points. We don't know what Griffin's progressions are on each throw. Sure, they could be someone out open in the flat, but maybe he's Griffin's 3rd or 4th read and he just didn't get time to look that way. It's really hard to tell without knowing what the playcall is and who the primary, secondary, etc reads are on each play.

I do agree that he holds onto the ball too long. But again, that's what you get with those scrambling type QBs. We love when he holds onto the ball for that extra second and make a huge play downfield or a big run. But then we complain when he hold onto the ball for that extra second and it leads to a sack. Though I do wonder if a better OL would give him that extra second most times.

I think part of it is Griff doesn't throw guys open at times. He needs to see them open. Plodders like Brady and Manning don't get sacked as they can anticipate better and trust their receivers will be open in the spot they're throwing it to.

This is what it seems like to me as well. Kirk looked better about anticipating and leading guys, he just happened to also be better (worse?) about throwing to the other team as well.

I can just feel the excitement.
I think we're about as pumped as we can be as a 3-6 team facing off against a 1-8 team lol
We really should be mapping out our playoff scenarios! OK, so if we win out...
7 in a row or we don't go!!

But seriously, what I want to see these final 7 games is improvement from RG3, Morris, younger guys like Breeland, Moses (if he plays), Long (if he plays), Garcon, Hatcher, Riley. If those guys play the way they have/can, we could play pretty well down the stretch. Ideally, I'm holding out hope for a 7-9 season. That would mean after a bad 1-5 start, we'd finish the season winning 6 of 10. Not a bad way to finish uder a rookie HC.

This is a huge game for me. We need to completely destroy Tampa to keep my homer glasses on. If it is a squeaker or a loss the team has no hope this year. A Tampa destruction and I'll keep with my 8-8 or better hope, which would be awesome.

I think there is only one weapon the Bucs can hurt the 'Skins with...Mike Evans. Big question will be can McCown get him the ball on a regular basis, since Bucs OL is horrible and we rush/blitz aggressively?

Depends if we rush/blitz. We didn't do it at all against the Vikings.

Yeah it is a big "IF," right? In some ways I hope Haz screws it up so he can ceremonially find himself with a lot of free time before X-Mas. :pickle:

There's a possibility that they lay another egg today. They should be better than Tampa Bay, but none of us knows if they really are. A win today, even a bad one, will turn the horses around and head them back towards the corral a bit. A loss today, and the horses are gone for the rest of the season. It'll become like the end of Zorn's last season and the end of last season - disarray, drama.

I think Griffin, Morris, and the WR's will do enough to win today.

The team will be helped by Lauvao's replacement --- Sam --- a lifelike rubber bag with Lauvao's face painted on it, 6'3", filled with 315 pounds of sand. In practice it has been holding its position in pass blocking far better than Lauvao. Other O-linemen complained a bit in practice about carrying it to the line on every play, but overall they're happy about the change. On stretch running plays they know where Sam will be in their way, whereas Lauvao was all over the place getting blocked back into them.

Inactive today

QB Kirk Cousins, WR Aldrick Robinson, WR Santana Moss, T Tyler Polumbus, G Spencer Long, DE Stephen Bowen, CB Greg Ducre

Skins better score 30 something points or I'm going to punch Dan Snyder in the face. After I ask him for a loan. :boxing:
