***OFFICIAL WIS XIV DRAFT THREAD*** (1 Viewer)

1.21 Bernie Carbo, OF

Welcome to the team...

On April 1, 2010, in an interview with the Boston Globe, Carbo admitted to doing drugs during the 1975 World Series. He states, "I probably smoked two joints, drank about three or four beers, got to the ballpark, took some [amphetamines], took a pain pill, drank a cup of coffee, chewed some tobacco, had a cigarette, and got up to the plate and hit." It was not just a one-time binge, however. In the same article, Carbo states, "I played every game high. I was addicted to anything you could possibly be addicted to. I played the outfield sometimes where it looked like the stars were falling from the sky."
After retiring, he spent time as a hairdresser

Never mind.

Man I wish I had time to do this. Just reading through the thread is giving me the itch.

1.22 - Doug B - Paul Waner (OF)

Famous for his ability to hit while hung over, when Waner gave up drinking in 1938 at management's request, he hit only .280—the first of only two times that he failed to hit .300 as a Pirate. As an opposing manager once said in complimenting his base-running skills, "He had to be a very graceful player, because he could slide without breaking the bottle on his hip."

Waner was also nearsighted, a fact that Pirate management only learned late in his career when he remarked that he had difficulty reading the ads posted on the outfield walls. Fitting him with glasses, however, only interfered with his hitting, as Waner now had to contend with a small spinning projectile rather than the fuzzy grapefruit-sized object he had been hitting before.

I changed my mind. I'll play.
If you can talk Doug out of his 2nd team, you'd be OTC.
Wow, you guys are quick. I already edited that out. I really don't have time, and I'd be holding things up all the time. I'll be in the next one.
:hijacked:
Excellent schtick potential here.
he's just jockeying for position 1.03 in the all-time Sim owners draft

could knock off three quick picks right chere

Arsenal of Doom said:
Gerald Dempsey Posey III, C

Key facts:

Has won a Championship in 100% of his Major League seasons

Winner of many college awards, including the #### Howser and Golden Spikes award

Famously had Florida St. locker semi-retired by the team in homage

Best "Buster" available

ETA - PM sent to HT
one more thought on this pick: preparing for this draft made it abundantly clear to me that Posey should be ROY this year. You can make a really good case that it was the 2nd best rookie season all-time by a catcher.

2.03 - Doug B - Johnny Mize (1B)

Might not be the VBD pick, and might be light on the PA, but bats like his will be uncommon in this thing.

2.4 Addie Joss, SP

No where near as cool as Carbo, but I would hate to see what pitching is left by the time it gets back to me.

Joss was additionally a popular columnist for the Toledo News-Bee during the off seasons and served as their Sunday sports editor. His writings proved so popular that sales of the paper increased and a special phone line was installed in his office to field the large volume of calls he received from fans.
Stadium - Shibe Park

2.05 Richie Ashburn, OF - 1948 Phillies

During an August 17, 1957 game, Ashburn hit a foul ball into the stands that struck spectator Alice Roth, wife of Philadelphia Bulletin sports editor Earl Roth, breaking her nose. When play resumed, Ashburn fouled off another ball that struck Roth while she was being carried off in a stretcher.[3] Ashburn and Roth would maintain a friendship for many years and her son later served as a Phillies batboy.
One of my favorite random baseball stories

Doug B - Fenway Park (Boston)

Super Nintendo Chalmers - Shibe Park (Philadelphia)

I'll take Target Field

GORGEOUS ballpark BTW

Glad I had a chance to check it out this year (Tre > :bye: )
It is a nice park. They really crammed it in there. I heard that it has the smallest footprint of any stadium in the country.
No way it's smaller than Fenway'sThat doesn't seem possible
Found it. Link
Target Field’s footprint is only 8.5 acres large – the smallest in Major League Baseball

Nice, looks like we are already about to implode this draft.

:lmao:

Will make my evening in Addison, Texas go by a bit quicker. Well, that and some porn.
