***OFFICIAL WIS XIV DRAFT THREAD*** (2 Viewers)

5.14 - Ted Wilks, SP

The 28-year-old rookie, who was classified 4-F because of stomach ulcers, was a key factor in the team's winning a third straight National League pennant in 1944. In his role as a part-time starter and reliever, he had an eleven-game winning streak and finished with a record of 17-4, including four shutouts and an ERA of 2.65.

Wilks was the starter and the 6-2 loser in game three of the 1944 World Series to the cross-town Browns, but entered the sixth game in relief of starter Max Lanier with one out in the sixth inning and retired eleven in a row in preserving the 3-1 Series clincher.

After his playing career ended, Wilks spent time as a coach for the Cleveland Indians (1960) and Kansas City Athletics (1961). He was later a court bailiff in Houston, TX, where he died August 21, 1989, at age 73.

.#46 on the list of the greatest Rangers of all time is a player that I imagine everyone here is familiar with. In a lot of ways, he's an example of the opposite XXXX XXXX and the syndrome he represents. While XXXX was a heavily hyped first round pick, this player was an undrafted free agent, plucked out of the independent leagues. While XXXX was 22 when he broke in, this player was 26 years old when he made the majors, and didn't even play in pro ball until age 24. While XXXX was a guy on the top of all the prospect lists, this player barely cracked the Rangers' top 10 prospects list in BA the one year he made the list, and that was more a testament to the weakness of the Rangers system (those ahead of him included Kelly Dransfeldt, Ryan Glynn, Shawn Gallagher, and Mike Zywica). While XXXX was a player for whom stardom was expected, for #46, just making a major league roster was something of an upset.

We might have a new SammyTRE replacement. Can you guess who?

Anyone want to trade out of an upcoming slot? Looking at one player in particular. Let me know.
Where's larry_boy when you need him?
There would have been 12 trades by now with Larry around. Can offer my 6th and 7th rounders, let's do this!
The traditional rule is no trades allowed until the end of round 5
Traditional? Only because you almost fell out of your wheelchair over WIS IV.

I thought it was no trades allowed until the start of round 5.

Eephus is ramping up the annoying levels since the New York Giants won the World Series. It's like Hoos First and Mr P made a 90 year-old baby.

Why poor me? You should be proud to have such a fine upstanding individual on your team.Interesting Jeff Zimmerman fact: paid $757,500 while playing for the Texas Rangers. Paid $10 million after that by the Rangers and never threw another major league pitch for them. Tough break for the club.

Needed to get caught up.

Jerry Koosman, SP

Random Kooz story:

Jerry's intellect and ability to perceive things others might not see helped him greatly when he was on the mound. It also helped in "real" life.

When the Mets offered Koosman $9,000 for the 1967 season, he pointed out that the minimum salary of $7,000 was being raised to $10,000.

Since the Mets were offering $2,000 above the minimum, Kooz pointed out that he should be paid $12,000.

The Mets agreed that his logic was as sharp as his curve ball. Jerry got the money.

Trying to figure out what pitcher to take is hurting my head. So I might as well take another crappy defensive outfielder.

Tim Raines, OF

Should get on base a lot for Carbo and Carty. And with the cheese cannons most of these catchers will have for arms I predict 130 sbs.

Overheard at Irish dive bar just now:

Drunk Girl: I'll have a bottle of water.

Irish bartendress: I don't have a bottle of water. I can give you a glass of water.

Drunk Girl: I'll take a Corona
