Detroit Tigers' Alex Avila passes Russell Martin for AL starting spot in All-Star Game
DETROIT -- Detroit Tigers catcher Alex Avila isn't just an All-Star selection.
He'll get the start behind the plate for the American League in the 82nd annual Major League Baseball mid-summer classic July 12 at Chase Field in Phoenix, according to final fan balloting results released this afternoon.
Avila surpassed Russell Martin of the New York Yankees in a late push from fans.
Avila, 24, leads all A.L. catchers with a .299 batting average, 16 doubles, 46 RBIs and a .531 slugging percentage. He also ranks among the league leaders at his position with 10 home runs and 67 hits.
He has thrown out 38 percent of base stealers this season.
The Tigers had three additional players named to the A.L. roster as reserves.
Starting pitcher Justin Verlander, first baseman Miguel Cabrera and closer Jose Valverde all made the All-Star team for the second consecutive season.
It is the third straight selection and fourth overall for Verlander, who is 11-3 with a 2.32 ERA, sixth for Cabrera, who is hitting .329 with 17 home runs and 56 RBIs, and third for Valverde, who is 2-3 with 19 saves.
Detroit Tigers fire pitching coach Rick Knapp after week of blowout losses
DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers announced the dismissal of pitching coach Rick Knapp following a come-from-behind 6-3 win against the San Francisco Giants on Sunday afternoon at Comerica Park.
Tigers president, CEO and general manager Dave Dombrowski informed Knapp of the coaching change immediately after the game.
"I talked to him after the game," Dombrowski said. "We're very thankful for what Rick has done for the organization. We just have not pitched as well as we're capable of. I'm not putting it all on him, but I just feel we can be better.
"It's just something we felt needed to be done."
Jeff Jones, who had been serving as the team's bullpen coach, replaces Knapp.
"It's a joint decision between Dave and myself," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "It's a bittersweet (thing). I think it's the first time I've ever lost a coach during the season like that. It's difficult, but that's what it is."
The Tigers have a staff ERA of 4.39, but starting pitchers Rick Porcello, who earned the win Sunday thanks to a late rally, Max Scherzer and Phil Coke have been struggling. So has the team's bullpen of late.
Mike Rojas, the organization's Director of Player Development, has been added to the major-league coaching staff and is set to join the Tigers on Monday in Anaheim, Calif., for the beginning of a seven-game road trip.
Porcello was all over the place yesyerday, very surprised he lasted as long as he did. Not only hitting guys but bouncing the ball in front of the plate as well. Did not look comfortable at all.One thing I noticed sitting that close is that Papa Grande looks in horrible shape! When he ran in from the bullpen he was gassed and breathing hard. The guy needs to drop some LBs.So they fire Knapp after a bad run but they've kept Lloyd on through years of struggle at the plate? Ok, that makes sense.ETA: Firing Knapp could be the right call but he was never Leyland's guy so that makes me wonder. Tigers were top 4 in starting pitching cats up to interleague play but obviously so much rests with Porcello and Scherzer that a change now might be the right move. I'm just surprised they kept McClendon through all the struggles and were quick to can Knapp. When fans are talking about giving up on Porcello that is a bad sign, Porcello is the one guy you don't want to give up on but he's regressed since that playoff game in Minnesota.
Porcello was wild because they had him open up his delivery. So with that came better bite on his pitches, strikeouts and the wild pitches. This was them going away from Knapp coaching techniques to see what happened.Porcello was all over the place yesyerday, very surprised he lasted as long as he did. Is he even going to be able to pitch more than 5 or 6 innings at this point even if he does well. He's been in the pen for so long that I assume his arm isn't stretched out enough yet to go longer than that. It would be ironic to see him pitch well only to see Coke still screw the game up and lose by blowing a lead late.Kind of anxious to see what Furbush can do tonight. Is a critical piece if the Tigers want to win their division. Unfortunately, even if Furbush has a solid start, not sure the bullpen can hold for him.
I think the success Granderson is having is another indictment on Lloyd. His swing was broken after he left Detroit and he couldn't hit lefties. The NY hitting coach fixed his mechanics and suddenly he's putting up huge numbers (granted playing at Yankee stadium plays a role but there's no way Lloyd would have turned Grandy around like NY has). You know what we need?Bobby ####### Seay. When the hell is that guy coming back? Can't find any current info on him. I can't believe it took this long to bring up Granderson. Took 18 months to hear that, no one was complaining when AJAX was winning ROY (he really won) and Scherzer was wrapping up the season with the sub 3 post all-star break ERA and a whip of around 1. Good for Granderson, he deserves this kind of season and I'm glad for him after watching him slip into oblivion these last few years. He finally figured out how to hit lefthanders, I figured that would come at some point.![]()
That's always the thing about trades. I thought of this and I agree to a point as it relates to confidence and being a major league hitter. Granderson probably was going to figure it out regardless but obviously he has better coaching in New York, he would have better coaching at Erie to be honest. I don't mind them canning Knapp for the reasons they gave, but how they continue to employ Lloyd is beyond me. Boesch, Miggy, VMART and Peralta are the only guys who can hit and only Boesch might be able to give some credit to Lloyd.I think the success Granderson is having is another indictment on Lloyd. It's just ####ty. I can live with the Granderson deal and, ya, its probably just a reactionary response to Knapp being fired but this #### is old. Leyland puts out lineups that are not geared to win. He literally puts the team in a position to lose. How many managers continue to do this and keep their job? Hell he STILL has Avila hitting 7th and rotating in and out of the lineup. The guy has a better WARP than Miggy. That's ######ed!!! Instead Magglio switches back and forth between the 3 and 5 and can't hit more than a single and is a liability on the basepaths. And not that it needs to be mentioned but the day Ryan Raburn leaves Detroit they should throw a parade like the Lions won the damn Superbowl.I thought of this and I agree to a point as it relates to confidence and being a major league hitter. Grade A rant here, nice. Yeah if there is one thing I really hate about Leyland are his line-ups. They never make any sense and why Peralta or Avila isn't hitting in the top three is ridiculous.
When Carlos Guillen is brought back from the land of the crippled RR might still be Toledo bound. Not sure who else they could send.RABURN!LOL
Dirks or Wells. Doesn't make sense if that happens but Raburn is playing more than them so I could see one of them sent down instead of him. The guy is like gum on the bottom of your shoe - can't get rid of him. When Carlos Guillen is brought back from the land of the crippled RR might still be Toledo bound. With Jackson iffy right now I wouldn't send an outfielder, I figured more of a 2nd base switch that would be a decent offensive upgrade.Dirks or Wells. I hear ya. Problem is you are using common sense and that doesn't coincide with how the personnel and lineup decisions are being made for the team. With Jackson iffy right now I wouldn't send an outfielder, I figured more of a 2nd base switch that would be a decent offensive upgrade.Dirks or Wells. Tigers shortstop Jhonny Peralta named to American League All-Star team
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Detroit Tigers missed their opportunity to have five All-Stars when Victor Martinez finished second Thursday to Chicago White Sox first baseman Paul Konerko in the All-Star Final Vote.
A day later, they got to five anyway.
Jhonny Peralta was named to the All-Star team late Friday night as a replacement for Derek Jeter, who pulled out of the game to rest an injured calf. It will be the first All-Star appearance for Peralta, who finished fourth in the fan voting.
Indians shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera, the only other shortstop on the All-Star roster, suffered an ankle injury Tuesday but has played in all three games since.
Peralta was hitting .310 with 14 home runs and 49 RBIs heading into the game Friday night against Kansas City.
agreed AND Coke has helped the bullpen in late innings too.Valverde with his Todd Jones-esque saves lately has been giving me a heart attack. Hopefully he can keep it going and not fall off the map like he did the second half of last season.I am liking the starting rotation a lot better with Furbush in there. A solid start today should translate into a win.
Yea I'd be surprised if DD doesn't make a trade for a starter. Not sure who is available. So they sent Furbush down so he could continue to start in Toledo over the all star break and recalled Worth. Next time the 5th starter has to pitch is July 20 and Leyland isn't committing to using Furbush for that start. Looks like we may see Andy Oliver again, who knows. Looks more and more like we will need to get another starter for the rotation at the trade deadline.
Verlander today so it would be nice to get 3 of 4 from KC and maybe jump into first place at the break.
Even though he was batting against a righty Leyland elects to not bat Don Kelly but does decide to put Kelly in on defense for the bottom of the 8th
