So they blow another big lead today and now have to use up a bunch of arms in the bullpen before the series against Minn starts tomorrow. Fantastic.
No kidding. Not sure about pulling Bondo with 74 pitches and a spent bullpen. It was an important game being the last game of a brutal trip, and Leyland wanted Zumaya to squash the inning, but it wasted an opportunity to give the relievers a rest.I don't want to hear moaning from Tigers fans about the pen when they start to wear out and give up some runs. The starters have given this team nothing so far and are gradually driving the only guys who are pitching well into the ground.

Zumaya was as good as I've ever seen him when he pitched on Saturday. Not good tonight, but if he stays healthy (unlikely) he's gonna be a key part in this team's chances. They are finding ways to score runs by putting guys on and moving them over and in. I don't understand why teams continue to pitch to Cabrera with no protection, but they do.

Leyland has already said Zumaya is not available for the next two games v Minn. Verlander needs to come through today with some innings. I don't understand why MLB scheduled a day game on Sunday and a night game on Monday so the Tigers now have to travel back from an 11-game trip to play Minn tonight. Poor scheduling by MLB.

"That's the best arm I've seen since I don't know when,'' said strikeout king Nolan Ryan, who watched Zumaya strike out five in two innings on Sunday in Texas. "His fastball was electric.''

Thats some high praise for Zumaya, it be fun to see him pitch to the M & M Boys this week.

Your only hope will be if he gets into the game on Thursday. He will not pitch the next 2 games for the Tigers.

Nice win today. I turned it on when they were down 6-5, and then boom!

Starting pitching is really worrying me at this point, but the season is still young. Twins haven't lost a series this year, until tomorrow....

:lmao: Nice win today. First time this year the Twins have lost a series, lost back to back games, and been shut out. Great to see Willis pitch a great 6 innings.

:lmao: Willis. Against a weakened Twins line-up, but his biggest problem in the past has been control more than getting knocked around. Seems like now he's getting the ball over the plate consistently. I didn't think he could be this productive through a month of the season. He and Bonderman have been better than Verlander and Porcello.

The only pitcher the Twins got to this series was Scherzer. Pretty encouraging.

Unfortunately we have to face Pavano again next series. No Liriano though.

I'm really having a fun time watching these guys play. :drive:

Still not sure if they can hang with the Twins all year, especially if Liriano keeps pitching like he is, but so far so good.

Brennan Boesch what can the baseball elite tell me about him? looks good so far
K's too much and doesn't walk enough, whether he sticks or not depends on if he's mashing. 2009 still could be the outlier, but what he's done early this season is reason for optimism. I hope we don't lean on him too heavily because he's the type of bat that could hit a big midseason slump once pitcher's get a book on him.

Good to see 2 of the biggest question marks throwing decent for the 4th & 5th guys in the rotation + Verlander looks on the improve. But Porco seems to be going through the well known sophomore slump.

Dontrelle Willis' comeback is a key for the Tigers

USA TODAY

The Twins, leaders in the American League Central, have a strong rotation, keyed by what looks to be a healthy comeback by lefty Francisco Liriano.

But, the Tigers, the team the Twins beat in a one-game playoff to win the division last season, have a lefty making a comeback as well, and that could be a huge boost to the Tigers' chances in the AL Central this season.

Dontrelle Willis is 1-1 with a 3.75 ERA for the Tigers after beating the Twins this week. His next start is Tuesday in Minnesota, giving him a chance to win consecutive games for the first time in more than three years.

Willis was 1-6 with an 8.27 ERA in his first two seasons with the Tigers, who acquired him from the Marlins in 2007 and then gave him a three-year, $29 million contract.

"The sun shines on anybody," he said to the Associated Press. "If you work hard and humble yourself, I like your chances. It's a good feeling, but I'm not content. I think I can put together a nice season."

By Mel Antonen

I hope Willis leaves a little sunshine for the Twins. Great start for Willis, I hope this kid does well, after all he has been through ;)

This Jackson kid all he does is hit singles or K. Hes pretty good.
He made a play on a ball in Texas that only a handful of CFers would have made and his arm is a serious upgrade over Granderson. He's also scored 20 runs this season and even though he has 32 Ks, he does have a .422 OBP as he is working in some walks. Very pleased with the rook so far. :goodposting:

Yeah if he develops some power Yanks may have gotten robbed.

I am interested to see how he does when pitchers find his weakness at the plate, but he looks solid. Brings much needed defense to that outfield to boot. Nice trade by the TIgers.

Nice job by Bonderman today.

6IP

1ER

2R

10 hits (8 singles and 2 doubles)

0 walks

His 4 seam fastball was hitting 93 with consistency today and he was throwing the slider for swinging strikes. Most importantly he was throwing his change for looking strikes. Not super, but Bondo is getting into the groove and is a good option at the back of the rotation right now.

Could we the Tigs try not falling behind by 3 runs early tonight?

Also, Austin Jackson is sitting on the fence right now. He is striking out a ton and if he is not able to make an adjustment pretty soon he could be in for a major slump. Would love to see this kid adjust to how he is being pitched. This is an important stretch for him.
Do not like his approach at the plate at all.
This guy should just stop posting altogther.

No doubt he has been impressive, but his BABIP is tops in the major leagues by 100+ points.
When you hit as many line drives as he has that's what will happen, his k rate concerns me (as it should anyone) but when he makes contact it's hard and on a line. Balls in play hit hard and on a line are going to find ground a lot more often than any other hit.

Attended the game today. Damon was in the zone. Brilliant throw home stopping the go ahead run and then the walk off. Simply awesome. Great day at the park.

"He's doing fine," manager Jim Leyland said. "But let's just take it easy. He's a young player, and that's the way it is. They're going to have their ups and downs."

He'll regress to the mean, that's all I was pointing out.

Verlander doing his thing today... 1 hit through 7. And he hasn't even hit the century mark yet!
Retired 23 straight at one point, now to get more out of Scherzer and Porcello. Great series though, tons of runs on Friday, walk-off on Saturday and Verlander dealing on Sunday.

EJAX just blowing up in Arizona, didn't see that coming. I have him on my bench in fantasy right now, but I'm surprised because he usually starts the season fast.

Looks like we owne Dumbrowski some props. All the guys we dumped are struggling. The Jackson deal is looking like a steal right now..I know it is early. The Damon signing was the best move the team made. The guys love him in the clubhouse and he is a professional hitter at the plate.Damon is loving playing the leader role here something he could not do in NY.

I always liked the offseason moves DD made - he sold high on Jackson and I've always been a fan of Scherzer. We'll see how that plays out. I never in my wildest dreams thought Austin Jackson would be this good so early on - I was more concerned he'd put too much pressure on himself to replace Granderson and start slow. Guess not. My buddy who is a die hard Yankees fan was pissing and moaning yesterday about Javy Vasquez and Grandy getting hurt and I told him they could have had Austin Jackson and Ian Kennedy instead. The Damon signing has been huge and he pretty much fell into our lap since no one else gave him a serious offer. He has really filled in well for Polanco at the #2 slot which was a huge void for the team to fill - Damon has had lots of clutch hits and with Jackson being a true lead off hitter the top 2 hitters have been able to set the table for Maggs and Cabrera. Porcello is the one that concerns me the most right now. I've also finally concluded that Raburn is hopeless in the field.

Yes to both of these. The only two surprising disappointments for me this year. Well, I never considered Raburn a good fielder, but geez, he is horrendous. Not hitting a lick either. Send him down instead of Bosch. Just because he's supposed to be able to play infield doesn't mean he does. Let Santiago be the sole infield fill-in.

I saw this thing on MLb network about porcello. they said that the tigers dont want him throwing his 4 seam fastball and the talkhead thought that was limiting his effectivenessWhy would the tigers not let him throw an effective pitch? arm wear n tea?

I heard the very end of Rick Knapp on First Pitch on mlb channel and when Dibble was reviewing the interview he said that Rick was taking all the blame for Porcello's problems. Did anyone catch what he said?

DETROIT -- Rick Porcello isn't completely over his sophomore slump, but nearly everyone from the Tigers, from his catcher to his coaches to Porcello himself, agree that he's getting there. Porcello got the victory on Friday night over the Angels after giving up five runs on eight hits over 5 1/3 innings. Three of those runs came home when Torii Hunter jumped on a first-pitch slider for a home run in the third inning. His sinker, however, had good results, and that was the focus of Porcello and Tigers coaches who worked with him between starts. After comparing video of Porcello's recent outings to footage of him from last year, they spotted a slightly lower arm angle and a more forward release point in his delivery this season. Correspondingly, Porcello's sinker either flattened out or stayed too high in the strike zone, allowing opposing hitters to get more of it. Porcello's sinker on Friday helped him get back to the groundball pitcher he was for so long last year. He induced nine ground-ball outs compared with only one popout. "The sinker definitely felt better," Porcello said. "I got some foul balls underneath the bat, got a lot of ground balls, so I think that's starting to come back. Felt a lot better. It's not quite where it was last year, but it's getting better." Porcello and catcher Gerald Laird tried to help him find a rhythm by going with one fastball after another early to let him get a feel for the pitch. The better feeling for Porcello was the sizable lead he had from the Tigers offense in the fifth inning."After that, I was able to just go out there and try to throw fastballs at the knees and get ground balls," Porcello said, "and not worry about a run here or a run there. Other than that pitch to Torii, I felt a lot better than I did the two previous starts. I had a couple ground balls that found some holes."
With Porcello just turning 21 and his success late last season in particular, I was expecting him to be inconsistent this year. The 4-seam fastball isn't really hard on the arm at all but I think he has had trouble throwing it for strikes. The 2-seam is his best pitch, it has a lot of sinking action and he can throw it in any count for strikes. The 4 seam is a pitch he uses to set up his change-up and he can bring it 2-3 mph faster. It's a set-up pitch for him and something he can throw early in the count or before or after the change up. He is also throwing a slider this year which I really don't understand that much. His 2-seam is so good, there really isn't any need for a slider as an out pitch and it just puts more wear and tear on the elbow and shoulder. A traditional curve seems like a much better idea for Porcello going forward and it he can throw the 4-seam for strikes, then I would stick to three pitches for now. With his live arm and his control if he can master three pitches and mix in a traditional curve, there is really no reason for a slider. I'm kind of surprised they are adding a slider with him if he can't locate the 4-seam. Looks like Knapp had some film sessions over the past two starts so I would imagine we'll see a better Porcello soon. I still think he's gonna be a bit unpredictable and inconsistent but that’s ok, he’s 21 years old in his second full season.

Looking forward to watching the Tigers play a road game against the Twins that is not in the Metrodome :blackdot:

Looks like Mauer may not play the entire series.
