***Officialish Detroit Tigers Thread*** (1 Viewer)

Second straight terrible start by Scherzer. This is not good. No time to panic yet - but it certainly is worrisome.Leyland: "In the history of my career I don't think I've ever taken a starter out of the game in the 1st inning two games in a row."
Oh please no............I don't want Dontrelle 2.0. ;)

Got my Opening Day tickets on Saturday. :lmao: Any other FBGs heading down?
I'd like to, if I can score some off Craigslist at a livable markup.I tried for like 4 hours on Saturday...I cannot stand Tickets.com and their crappy "virtual waiting room" that, even when you make it thru to the purchase page, the server still cannot accomodate you. You get sent back to the order page and are told to try again. When you do, you either get the same situation or you somehow get pushed back into the waiting room, to further wait for an ordering page that isn't going to work.I actually pulled a set of tickets one time during my ordeal and when I hit "checkout", it again threw me back into the waiting room :goodposting: Looks like plenty of tickets were sold during the process, just not any to me. Not sure where I went wrong...or maybe just a luck of the draw type thing. Ticketmaster has loads of well-publicized issues but they walk on water compared to Tickets.com. Not sure why the concept of first in line, first to be served and on from there is so foreign. Who else sells merchandise by "randomly" pulling people from a mob scene? Who else, if they can't serve you in a timely manner, sends you back out into the street to try to fight your way back in again?

Reminder about 2011...

Detroit's 2011 Payroll SituationBy Mike Axisa [March 13 at 11:29am CST]Once the Tigers traded Curtis Granderson and Edwin Jackson for four pre-arbitration eligible players, the thought was that owner Mike Ilitch was trimming payroll after the recession hit Detroit especially hard. However, he then approved a massive extension for ace Justin Verlander as well as the signing of Johnny Damon, and now his team's Opening Day payroll is expected to be somewhere around $130MM, up from $115MM last year.Lynn Henning of The Detroit News wrote about the payroll savings GM Dave Dombrowski will enjoy after the season, which are pretty significant. Here's a look at the money the Tigers have coming off the books after the 2010 season...Jeremy Bonderman, $12.5MM salary in 2010 Dontrelle Willis, $12MM Nate Robertson, $10MM Johnny Damon, $8MM Brandon Inge, $6.6MM Gerald Laird, $3.95MM Bobby Seay, $2.475MM Adam Everett, $1.5MM That's $57.025MM in savings right there, and the team would be wise to avoid letting Magglio Ordonez reach the 540 plate appearances needed for his $15MM option to vest.Ilitch isn't shy about spending big on the free agent market, and he'll have the money available to add a big bat to complement Miguel Cabrera (Jayson Werth, Aramis Ramirez if he declines his option?) as well as another elite starter to a rotation that already includes Verlander, Rick Porcello, and Max Scherzer (Josh Beckett, Cliff Lee?) after the season. Keep in mind that I was just throwing some names out there off our 2011 free agents list, and that the Tigers have not been linked to any of those players in any rumors we've seen. The Tigers are already in a position to compete in the AL Central, and once they shed some dead money after the season, they'll have a chance to jump ahead of the pack if they spend wisely.
This team will be competitive this year and will have big cash to spend after the season. Detroit could be set up for years to come.

There is no way Maggs will come close to 540 ABs. With Maggs off the books that is close to 70 million trimmed from the payroll. And none of those guys are impact players.

I like the Damon signing..I wished we would have inked him for two years instead of one. I love Maggs too but right now Mags is a DH type without a whole lot of power. Maggs at 5-8 million..yes. At 15-18 Hell no!

I'm okay with just the one year, but Damon is definitely the only guy on that list who isn't overpaid in 2010. I just hope there are some decent guys willing to come here in 2011. Let's start with Werth and Cliff Lee and go from there.

Galaragga to Toledo. No surprise there.

I still say Nate gets first crack at No. 5 to start the season.

Jacob Turner optioned to West Michigan which is great for me since I will get to watch him pitch firsthand

Looking forward to watching the Sunday afternoon game vs. the Yankees on TV.

Bonderman and Nate will be 4 and 5. Either could slip into an abyss at any moment, but of those two and Willis, Willis is the most likely to. Miner is probably next on the chopping block.

No way. I live in Grand Haven. Where you from? We go to Whitecaps games a lot. We're cheap, buy the lawn seats and sit on the grass. Can't beat $5 apiece for a baseball game.

Live in Rockford about 15 minutes from the stadium, and work in downtown GR as well. I try to hit 1 or 2 games per month depending on my work/personal schedule. Can't beat going to a baseball game for $5 :sadbanana:

Yeah, I think the last two spots of the rotation are going to be a revolving door this year. I'm not sold on any of those 3 being a reliable option all season - guys like Bonine and Figaro will be getting shots as the season goes on. I am still surprised Washburn never signed anywhere. Tigers should try to get him on a cheap, one year deal than go with Nate or Dontrelle IMO.

Might as well try to give the high paid guys a shot first than bring one more POS to throw at the wall. Plus there is no such thing as cheap. If Tigers begin to show interest another team will as well and Washburn like all baseball players will be paid.

Twins offered Washburn one deal for 5M, he turned it down, I bet he take less now

So how many AB's will Sizemore get this year?
I could see Sizemore playing about 120 games this season with Santiago playing 2B when he's not. The big issues will be whether his ankle is fully healthy once the season starts and whether he is up to the task of becoming an everyday 2B.

RHP Dontrelle Willis continues to pitch effectively in his bid to put two very bad years behind him. He gave up one run in four innings in his most recent outing, overcoming his control troubles in the first inning. "His overall stuff was good," manager Jim Leyland said. "The ball was darting around. But his command wasn't quite as good as it's been. Did he do great? No, but he sure as heck didn't do bad. I don't think anything Dontrelle has been through is an issue anymore. I didn't worry one bit about him not bouncing back with his command or that he would blow up. I was pretty sure he'd throw strikes. Last year I would have worried. But he's different this spring."

"It's a huge advantage to be able to adjust," Willis said, "but only if what you adjust to you throw for strikes. If I start over-analyzing, that's when I get in trouble."

He is competing with LHP Nate Robertson and RHP Jeremy Bonderman for two spots in the rotation.

Here's to Willis making the team and having a comeback season

Tiger reliever Seay out with torn rotator cuff

By JOHN LOWE

FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER

LAKELAND, Fla. — Tigers left-handed reliever Bobby Seay said today that he has a major shoulder injury — a tear in his rotator cuff — and will try to heal it through rehab work so that he can avoid what could be career-threatening surgery.

“I’ve got to keep a positive outlook,” Seay said. “I’ve got a pretty major injury that needs to be dealt with.

“I have a Grade 2 tear in the rotator cuff bordering on Grade 3, which is a full tear. If I have the surgery, there’s a chance I might never pitch again.”

Seay, 31, made it to the majors to stay with the Tigers in 2007. In the three seasons since then, he’s been a late-inning cornerstone for Leyland, especially against left-handed hitters in tough situations.

The shoulder has kept Seay sidelined throughout the exhibition season. Famed sports orthopedist James Andrews examined Seay on Thursday and confirmed the torn rotator cuff.

“Dr. Andrews told me I’m the only one who can decide on surgery,” Seay said. “He said there were no guarantees of anything if there’s surgery. He said it’s a surgery that hasn’t been mastered and that a lot of times it has ended people’s careers.

“I am confident going into rehab that I’ll get it back into form. My mantra is to play for the Detroit Tigers again. To come in and get big left-handed hitters out in crucial games and to be part of the team again. That’s what drives me as a pitcher to get back and play.”

Tigers' Jim Leyland reveals his cards -- well, some

USA TODAY

1 Recommend LAKELAND, Fla. – Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland will only parse out information under his own terms, at the time and place he deems right. He still won't shed any light on who will make up the back of the rotation behind Justin Verlander, Rick Porcello and Max Scherzer.

But Leyland did acknowledge the lineup the Tigers started against the New York Yankees in today's exhibition will probably be the same he'll send out for the season opener, April 5 in Kansas City.

The batting order looked like this:

1. Austin Jackson, CF

2. Johnny Damon, LF

3. Magglio Ordonez, RF

4. Miguel Cabrera, 1B

5. Carlos Guillen, DH

6. Brandon Inge, 3B

7. Gerald Laird, C

8. Scott Sizemore, 2B

9. Adam Everett, SS

"I'm still thinking about Sizemore and Laird (possibly flip-flopping them),'' Leyland said, "but that's probably the Opening Day lineup you see there today.''

Leyland said lefty reliever Bobby Seay was "down in the dumps'' after learning he has a rotator cuff tear. Seay, who went 6-3 with a 4.25 ERA for the Tigers last season, will try to rehab the shoulder in a six-week program rather than undergo surgery.

"He's kind of a special guy for me because he kind of floundered around, never really did much,'' Leyland said, "then all of a sudden … He did a hell of a job for us the last couple of years for us. Those are always good stories. My heart aches for him right now.''

By Jorge L. Ortiz

No shocks on this line up, I hope Everett can give Tiger fans more to cheer about with his bat. I know Everett will save you a few runs in the field.

So it looks like Dontrelle is the 5th starter. I think that means they keep both Bonine and Thomas also.

The only roster position left is Don Kelly or Clete.

Tigers traded NateRob and cash to FLA for LHP Jay Voss.
JUPITER -- The last southpaw the Florida Marlins obtained from the Detroit Tigers ended up in the minors. The Marlins are hoping lefty Nate Robertson provides more immediate dividends than Andrew Miller has so far.

On Tuesday, the Marlins added a lefty to their starting rotation by trading minor-league pitcher Jay Voss to the Tigers for Robertson and cash.

The Tigers are expected to pick up most of Robertson's $10 million salary.

Robertson, who began his major-league career with the Marlins in 2002, owns a career record of 51-69 and 4.92 earned-run average.

Voss was the Marlins' eight-round pick in 2007.

Sounds like a LOOGY. Maybe a replacement for Bobby Seay in a year or two.

I thought that was Phil Coke? Or Daniel Schlereth?I just don't understand why they got a mid-level prospect who's stuck behind quite a few young guys AND paid most of Nate's salary. No team can make it through the season with just five starters, especially with the Tigers four and five. Beyond Bonine who else is going to fill-in when needed? I hope some of the young guys heading to Toledo are ready.

I think that's a fair critique. I mean, they would have had to put him through waivers but NOBODY would claim him. If they did - awesome. So what's the point?

I think what it boils down to is that they like Bonine better than Robertson and they are stuck with Willis. I think they had two options, trade Robertson for a future LOOGY or dump Willis altogether. If the Marlins picked up 3 million on the contract, it probably was a decent deal for the Tigers. They now have five starters and Bonine. If Willis falters, Bonine is in and when Miner comes back they have a pretty solid BP. Schlereth is off to Toledo to learn how to throw more strikes.

Leyland mentioned Robertson would likely be unhappy not starting and that was a factor in trading him. I also think Bonine is a better fit as a long reliever/spot starter. I have no problem at all with the trade.

OPENING DAY! Awesome.

Tough matchup today versus Greinke. But it may be the best pitching matchup of the day in MLB.

Not sure if y'all watched the Yankee game last night. Curtis jacked a HR in the top of the 2nd and then got a terrible jump on a line drive in the bottom. That's our Curtis!

Austin Jackson is your key this year. If he does his thing, Detroit will be in the thick of it throughout the season.

If he's a dud, you go back to being a team of base cloggers waiting for a 3 run homer.

Nice baserunning by Sizemore not even drawing a throw from Pods. Jackson with the double, rooks coming up big here in the 7th.
