Inge is 4 for his last 57. He has been hitless in 15 of his last 19 games and in the other 4, he has one in each. His average is down to .177. His fielding has been average at best and he clearly does not have the range he used to.

It is ridiculous to see Inge in the lineup right now.

He is useless, he has no business being on the roster right now. Cannot believe he is signed thru next year too, PLUS a 500k buyout assuming they dont want him on the roster for 2013. Right now I would prefer Aurelio Rodriguez at 3B.Useless baseball trivia (according to wikipedia)....there have been three players in MLB history named Aurelio and all three were killed in automobile related incidents between the ages of 44 and 53.

That's a tough part of the park to go yard on. Deep. :excited: Liked the laid back, fun mood I was witnessing in the dugout last night. Hoping it's a good sign.ETA: I'm sending my kid to Victor Martinez "Art of the Slide" Baseball Camp in the offseason. That was humorous and stupid at the same time. Gene Lamont is a bit of a buffoon.

A bit? A BIT!?!I can't imagine there is a worse 3b coach in baseball than Gene LaMont. I can't believe he's still coaching. He's absolutely, positively ####### horrible.

Just saw this for the first time last night.

I know it's just sports and they're just athletes playing a game, but it literally pains me to see him in pinstripes because imho, he's too good for that team full of overpaid prima donnas. NY fans don't care about Granderson beyond what he does on the field, it's just box scores to them. The guy is so much more than that, but even on the field he's classy beyond any of his teammates. Okay, I'll get off my soapbox now.

No matter where he plays he'll remain my favorite though.

Betemit is a huge upgrade over Brandon Inge, but so is the kid hitting .310 in Connie Mack ball.

Betemit is good as a left-handed hitter but he isn't very good righthanded so that takes away a good platoon opportunity with Kelly. He has some power but is a back of the order guy and he walks some also. He's not that great at 3B in the field, but he's not Mark Reynolds bad and is better than a guy like Kevin Youkilis. He is not an upgrade over even a bad Brandon Inge in the field though, just a warning.

One thing is he's cheap, Tigers will only owe him around 400k the rest of the year and he's probably gonna be arbitration eligible at a very decent price if he plays well.

The players the Tigers traded are a mixed bag. Rodriguez is a guy I'm familiar with and he's really got a tremendous arm as a catcher and a big body. But he can't hit too much and at best he's probably a back-up guy down the road. Cruz I don't know much about but he's not highly regarded as far as I know.

It's a great day for Greco though, Inge has probably played his last game in a Tigers uniform. I don't see how they can keep and they don't have the roster space anyway unless they send Raburn packing which I doubt because he still has value. I think someone will pick Inge up as a defensive replacement, who knows. Never really liked or hated Inge but he certainly had some clutch hits in his stay and he made things exciting at times with his athleticism. I almost felt sorry for him the past few weeks because he has just lost it, and he's been a pretty good guy for the franchise the past decade. I can stand him if he can hit .240 and provide some power, but he can't even do that and his fielding has been suspect this year also.

Nice job by Below, can't really ask for a whole lot more. He cost himself a run with his fielding error and that Matsui HR that knocked him out was barely fair, just a couple of bad breaks.

Magglio starting to heat up also. Now they need to find a starting pitcher and word around the campfire is the Rockies really want Turner. I'd guess it will cost a lot more than Turner, but they need to give ubaldo a long look. With him they win the division and have a nasty playoff rotation with Verlander, Ubaldo and Scherzer. I don't see that happening, Tigers more likely to get a middling guy but Kuroda and Jimenez are obviously the two guys that are most interesting.

VMART!!!!!!! :excited:

Before I forget, I think trading Scott Sizemore was a mistake. He has hit at every level and just needed more time. That is all.
I agree. At least Pauley has looked good though. He's definitely helped the bullpen.
He has been pretty awful lately, he's a walk machine and doesn't strike guys out. This was a dumb trade especially with all the quality arms we have in the farm system. Tigers score three runs to take the lead and Purcey walks the bases loaded, awesome.ETA: I understand putting Purcey in to see what he has in these situations, but let's go Furbush next time Jimmy. TIA.

Tigers acquire Wilson Betemit from Royals, designate Brandon Inge for assignment

The Detroit Tigers today traded for Kansas City Royals third baseman Wilson Betemit.

After tonight's 7-5 loss to the Athletics, Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski announced that the team will officially designate Brandon Inge for assignment tomorrow. The plan is for Inge to clear waivers by Monday and for Inge to be send to Triple-A Toledo.

“It’s a tough situation,” general manager Dave Dombrowski said. “Brandon has done a lot for this organization … (but) he’s been scuffling.”

Inge is 4-for-54 since returning from mononucleosis June 24. Dombrowski wouldn’t reveal who will be removed from the 25-man roster to make room for Betemit. He said the club will make the announcement Thursday, when Betemit, 29, joins the team in Minneapolis.

After the game, Inge said he accepted the assignment, in part, because of the roots he and his family had set in Detroit. He also expressed gratitude to Tigers owner Mike Ilitch, who, according to Inge, said he did not want to release the third baseman.

Inge has full no-trade rights. He would have to sign off on a trade to another team. Inge is signed through next season at $5.75 million per year.

The Tigers gave up two prospects to get Betemit: Julio Rodriguez, a catcher for Class A Lakeland, and Antonio Cruz, left-handed pitcher for Class A West Michigan. Rodriguez was hitting .283, and Cruz was 2-6 with a 3.11 ERA.

Dombrowski said he had been looking for a third baseman recently. He also continues to look for a starting pitcher.

Betemit broke into the majors as a shortstop in Atlanta. He played part-time third base for the Royals the past two seasons, hitting .297 in 84 games last season and .281 in 57 games this year. He lost playing time when the Royals promoted rookie third baseman Mike Moustakas from Triple-A Omaha on June 10. Betemit started only five games and had 23 at-bats after Moustakas’ arrival.

He will be a free agent this off-season.

“Wilson’s a great guy, a kid who has got power and hits well from both sides of the plate,” Royals managers Ned Yost said. “He’s a good offensive player, who wore down at the end of last year. When Moose got here, he needed to play. Wilson is going to a club with a chance to play more.”

Dombrowski said the move was an offensive upgrade designed to help the team win “right now” by putting more pop in the bottom of the lineup.

He said the team didn’t want to get caught lacking at the trading deadline July 31. He said when he re-signed Inge in the off-season, he expected a .240 hitter with home run power and around 70 RBIs. Instead, Inge has managed only one home run and 17 RBIs while batting .177.

“I would not have thought that,” Dombrowski said. “We thought it would be a little better.”

Betemit also has played for the Atlanta Braves, Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox in a career that dates to 2001. He's a .268 career hitter.

That type of player is hard to find so now I understand why Dombrowski gave him $5.5 mil.
$5.5 for this year, next year AND a club option for 2013. I love the BS Inge spewed about accepted the assignment because of his roots, etc. The fact of the matter is no one else in the league would take him and he knows it.The big question is what overrated schlub will become the new fan favorite of the stupid portion of the Tiger fan base>

I think the decision to give Inge a contract like this...especially having a 2nd year...came from Ilitch. It is well known that Ilitch is a big fan of Inge.

I have been of the opinion that just about everything runs thru Ilitch first, DD is pretty much tied to his approval.

Tough spot for DD then, for sure. But I gotta believe he at least got his .02 in. Good to know that Ilitch is the baseball version of Jerry Jones, minus the plastic surgery, the year-round tan and the really awesome hair.

Well, that would explain why DD is still around after the Willis extension, the Robertson contract, the Magglio re-signing, Sheffield, the Inge contract(s), Jurrjens/Hernandez for Renteria, Moscoso for Laird, etc etc.

Right, hard to fire a guy for doing stuff you had a hand in.

He's hitting great but man does he look terrible going after ground balls. I don't even think he bends at the waist - he simply reaches his glove hand down and tries to scoop the ball up. I wanted to throw my remote through the TV after Purcey walked the bases loaded. Make 'em hit the ball at least. It's the #######' A's. I think the highest batting average in their lineup yesterday was .265. Unbelievable. We really need at least a split in Minnesota so they don't start gaining ground - especially with Chicago right after.

That's how latin players field ground balls. Obviously this is a generalization but we criticize guys because they don't get in front of the ball, like we were taught in little league. But they are great, great athletes. They don't field like us - they don't need to. They go to the side and scoop the ball up.

It's true and I hate that part about watching it with my 7 year old son. He recognizes it, especially when errors happen. "Dad, he's not moving his feet and getting in front of the ball." It may be how they do it but I don't like it at all. It's begging for errors or allowing runs that could be stopped. Get your lazy butt in front of the ball!

Why on earth are there Tiger's Scouts watching James Shields pitch? What does Detroit have to offer Tampa in their farm system that Tampa doesn't already have?

I'm not getting all this talk of Shields or Jimenez. The Tigers don't have the minor leaguers to do those trades.

But its not laziness. Its how they were taught. Its how they did it growing up and how they are most comfortable doing it now.The most common explanation is that the fields they grew up playing on were so terrible that they had to expect a bad hop.

Common sense says get your body in front of it. Practice gloving bad hops until your arms fall off, it won't help as much as getting in front of it. You have no idea which route it takes or how high a "bad hop" will be. I disagree with the style.

Yes they do, they have a lot of pitching. Probably the most pitching we've had in the system since the mid to late 70s.

The lineup is lethal now with Guillen hitting 7 and Inge no longer in it. Not even Lloyd could screw that up, right?

Gotta give Dombrowski credit on the Peralta signing. Guy has been clutch all season. Magglio has really looked good as well since coming off the DL.

Nice to see Scherzer pitch a good game as well tonight.

Will be interesting to see what other piece(s) they add before the trade deadline.

If Ulbaldo or Shields comes our way I've heard Oliver is the centerpiece for either of those deals. Turner could go too for Ulbaldo, didn't hear his name for Shields but that doesn't mean it couldn't happen. I think for either one of those guys its worth it. Shields has taken it to the Yankees this year despite losing twice to them.

OliverFurbushCrosbyTurnerRuffinSeriously, our farm system is loaded with high quality arms and I didn't even mention Below or Smyly. Oliver, Crosby and Turner are all considered very good to elite prospects and Furbush seems to be a guy some scouts under projected. Crosby has some injury concerns and he walks too many right now, but he was the #1 prospect in the organization going into last year and a lot of teams love him. Turner is the #1 prospect right now, he has all the tools. Oliver is going to be a good #3 guy, I think he is actually the guy we can project now. Furbush looks like a middle reliever with bite but we'll see them try to put him in the rotation again in the coming years. Ruffin has a huge arm, definite chance at closer or set-up guy in the coming years and I'd guess he'll make the roster next year. Problem is position players, only Castellanos and Fields are even worth mentioning.

Whoa - Max has two different colored eyes
You never knew that? Saw him interviewed last year and kept thinking what is up with his eyes. Now it is the first thing I notice. On another note..does the camera angle seem funky from the Twins new stadium?

I like Brad Penny, he has been pretty solid overall as a back of the rotation guy.

At Comerica he is well above average 4-2/3.15/1.27 and a 2.6 K/BB ratio. Now he's had a few clunkers on the road but he seems to have the White Sux number (3-0 vs them) and he has gone 6+ innings six straight games now and has done that in 14 of his 20 starts. Really can't complain about that, he was brought in as the #5 starter and he's been worth the $3 mm and then some.

Great camera angle. It's a straight on look so you get a much better view of what's inside or outside. A few stadiums do it now and I wish they all would.
