Valverde is gonna suck this year. Knew he was gonna blow this first one, ruined Verlander's day.
I think last year was a lot of luck. No way can you pitch yourself into so many jams and get out of it without blowing a save. His luck is just catching up to him. He will be a decent closer.

That's what I told my buddy and he said he hopes he gets lucky 49 times this year. Of course, but Valverde will be more like 37 for 44 this year and ten of those saves are gonna be roller coaster rides.

Which isn't too far off what Todd Jones typically did. My guess is about 45 saves with about 5 blown ones.

Yes, those who follow The Big Potato know he can put in some Todd Jones like performances. Last year he just blew a few innings instead of saves.

Now that Fielder is looming behind Cabrera, his walks will go...up?
Against lefties for sure. Another note..Inge was greeted with a heartfelt round of boos on opening day.
I heartily booed him and am glad others did as well. I have no idea why they even announced him anyway. Sure, he's on the DL but Marte and V-Mart are as well and they didn't get announced.Verlander's pitch count was 110 yesterday. I think he had 105 heading into the 9th. I have no problem with Valverde coming in under those circumstances, but with Pedroia leading off and the heart of the lineup coming up I thought going into the 9th he'd give up at least one run and it was a coin flip whether he'd give up a 2nd run. If Cabrera doesn't make that error at 3B Verlander probably has another 10-12 pitches to use for the 9th and maybe he stays in then. My main fear of Cabrera's poor defense is that it is going to lead to extended innings and up the pitch count for the starters. I know it's a trade off so I guess it is what it is. I am just glad the team got the W. Boston pen is weak without Papelbon or Bard in it. They should have kept Bard in the pen. Oh well, not my problem.

For the files of 'how in the hell does that happen?'...,..

After 1,000 MLB games played, Prince Fielder now has 232 career HRs

That's the same amount of HRs his old man hit in his first 1,000 MLB games

Yeah I saw that today, Daddy had about 20 more RBIs but that is pretty amazing. That really sucks for Fister, 15 day DL for a pitcher means a month and these obliques are hard to gage.

Who moves into the rotation, Below?

Yeah, I'd say Below. They can put him on normal rest now and he'll have a starter bullpen session.

Below looked decent enough. Shutting out the Red Sox for a few innings is the kind of confidence boost he needed after wilting a little in spring training. Losing Fister for a few weeks will put more pressure on Scherzer and Porcello to pitch well enough to eat some innings and save the bullpen.Another good take-away from the game was Miggy making plays at third. He also needed to have a game with some nice plays and no mistakes to boost his confidence. It goes without saying but Jackson getting on base is such a key for the offense. He bothered Beckett quite a bit and contributed to him losing his rhythm. A nice year from Jackson and the offense will be damn near unstoppable.

:goodposting: Jackson looks like a completely different player at the plate without the old leg kick.

We were eating dinner at Fishbones last night and who walks in...The Prince. In street clothes he looks like a fat ###! Seemed shorter in person than he looks on TV. There is no way you would think he is a MLB player if you did not know him. Maybe a nose tackle.

Nice enough guy though....almost everybody he walked by said Hey Price and he would say Hi and smile..but nobody really bothered him while he was eating asking for autographs.

Hoping Max can really throw that new two-seamer for strikes in hitter's counts this year. His four-seam is among the better ones in the game with good velocity and movement but hitters just sit on it in 2-0 and 3-1 counts. I think Porcello is the key to this team reaching their potential but Max is going to need to show he can stop losing streaks and get several consecutive quality starts to keep the pen fresh.

I'm going to start the Delmon Young complaining now, it will last throughout the season. Guy is going to get so many opportunities to hit with runners on base and he's gonna crash and burn a lot. One bad at bat here in the first, it belonged to Delmon. I think Avila should be hitting 2nd vs RHP and Boesch 5th, move Delmon to the bench.

Scherzer stepping up huge today.

These next few weeks are going to be painful without Fister.

Talk about run production it is amazing to think the Tigers replaced Inge with Cabrera at third, and did not lose any production at first base. Miggy and The Prince are way better than A-rod and Tex. Who else comes close at the corners?

I can't remember handing out a more deflating sweep than that in a series like that in a long time. Two multi-run comebacks in their last at bats, two walkoffs and a blow out in-between. It being the Red Sux made it that much more gratifying.

:goodposting: Couldn't have been more satisfying. No team I'd like to see the Tigers to send into a tailspin more than Boston. New York and Boston sitting at 0-3 is an early season treat.

Is KC the second best team in the division?
Too early to tell but Vegas had them a little better than Cleveland on win total. Minnesota is categorically terrible, White Sux rebuilding and the Tribe still a bit young. I would say probably, and I think they could win north of 85 games if they get good pitching. That was the first Tigers walkoff HR in extra innings when they were trailing since 1998? Damn. People really have to remember what is was like between 1992 and 2005, this franchise was a disaster. That is why I have trouble with fans like Comer, you have to remember where you were to appreciate where you are now. This team is very good and I think the pitching after Fister is going to be just fine, if not excel (I think Porcello is gonna bust out this year).

:pickle: And if Kansas City is the 2nd best team in the division then we should clinch by Labor Day. The only team that can compete with us is Cleveland. KC is a team on the rise, but their good pitching is still too young. Hochevar is forever a wildcard, Sanchez could be a decent middle/back end guy if he could ever get his BB/9 under 4, Paulino too, and Chen is a veteran swing man being forced to start. Just not enough there right now, but...give it 2 years. Cleveland has the pitching to keep pace, they just need to find some semblance of offense.

Great start to the year! Home games notwithstanding, nice to sweep Boston with some ..interesting ..wins. Really hoping Porcello starts the year strong, given Fister's injury and Max's first outing.

I saw a quote over the weekend, something about Prince saying "when I grow up, I want to be like him (Cabrera)." The relationship between them should be extremely positive for both. Cabrera is something of a role model for the younger stud (so: stay classy, MC), while Prince is challenged to perform as well as (or better than) Cabrera ...Prince can't relax as the sole star of the team.

It seems like Cabrera just keeps getting better every year, still hard to believe the Tigers were able to get one of the premier run producers in MLB for a bum and a prospect that still can`t stay healthy.

This will go down as one of the most lopsided trades in MLB history.

Miggy and Prince are BFF's. Almost inseperable. I've never seen Miggy laughing and smiling so much....has anyone else noticed this?

Yesterday, after Miggy tied it up with his 3 run bomb, they showed him in the dugout. I took notice that even though he was smiling and laughing with the others after a huge tying ding dong, he stopped and watche Prince at the plate.

So far the chemistry on this team is unbelievable. This may be the most fun season to watch in years. They're never out of a game....even though Maxmillion tries hard to ruin it.

I think Cabrera has been the best hitter in the game for a few years. We saw what he can do with a professional hitter behind him last year, without the benefit of many guys getting on base before him. Now we'll see what he does with a slugger behind him and maybe, hopefully, guys getting on base in front of him. He looks fit, he looks happy, and he's already pulverizing the ball. His OPS is going to be ridiculous this year, I don't see why he won't have a career year. Everything is lined up for a run-away MVP season.

At the time there were a few "never give up prospects" naysayers but even with his off field problems this may be end up being true.

BTW kudos for Leyland's lineups so far, not many offensive weak spots in the first 3 games.

Of course that will change when Inge come back.
