***Officialish Detroit Tigers Thread*** (3 Viewers)

ok its official, Im worried about JV
The good news would be if he doesn't make the all-star team and can get some extra rest ...maybe that'll help.
It's his approach, nothing physical. Last night he was throwing 89 mph fastballs and 94 mph fastballs in the same at bat with the change-up trying to change speeds in the first. It's either a brilliant plan to make himself unhitable when he has his pinpoint control, or he's gone rouge. In the 4th he was throwing 98 but the thing that worries me is all his arguing with the umps. He is going out of his way to ask for stuff that is borderline (but balls in the end) which makes me think he's lost some of his control.

Jim Palmer does color for the Orioles and was commenting how Verlander is expecting to get the calls because of who he is, and it doesn't always work that way. Palmer is the same guy who would walk a hot hitter with the bases loaded and he seemed to think Verlander had a gameplan, nothing wrong with stuff of mechanics.

Whatever his issue it's fixable, he demonstrated that with some fine outings after he was roughed up a few times. We don't need him to be perfect every time he goes out and I think the expectations are a bit ridiculous with him sometimes. He's gonna make the All-Star game also, and I don't think time off is what he needs. I think he needs to be reigned in some and he needs to maintain his composure a little better.

so you are saying its mental? well that could b the worst kind of issue.

Just tread along, no worries at all. Might as well let these average teams in Cleveland and KC stay in it, makes it interesting. Home field? Who cares. Consistency? Why do we need that?

Baltimore is good and all but once again it looks like they don't prepare for these teams at all. Why even pitch to Chris Davis? Stupid, stupid team.

Pitching to Machado, Markakis, Jones and Davis might not have been the best way for Leyland to help Valverde got his confidence back. I just hope he doesn't drill a batter here.

DD, thanks for the comments on JV ...helps to get that perspective.

Nice insult to Valverde - mop-up duty in a 9-3 pasting. Maybe they're getting the result they wanted ...a demonstration of his inability to simply get some outs.

Chris Davis = MVP
Joe Mauer = worst contract in baseball (yes I considered John Lackey)
good posting DD I would of never paid Mauer what he got, I don't think I would paid JV what he got either, but you and me don't cut the checks, we just pay for tickets. Davis is having good year, not to slight miggy
Davis is awesome but why didn't you post that in the Orioles thread?

Davis is hitting well above his historical pay grade ...have things truly clicked for him, or will he slump as the summer goes on? I guess we'll find out.

Since the start of the 2012 season Cabrera is...

1st in Avg

2nd in Hrs

1st in RBIs

1st in Runs

2nd in OBP

1st in Slugging

1st in OPS

Source: Bob Costas

Call Al Al and Rondon back up please. I think they need to make a trade though, Dotel is likely gone for the year so basically it's Smyly and Benoit and a lot of crap. Downs is fine as a mop-up guy I guess.

Jimmy should have brought in Smyly to face Pedroia, he's losing the close games with regularity.

JHONNY!!!!!! I didn't think they were capable of a walkoff.

Sa-weet!!!

But why go with Coke in the 8th? Smyly's pitching well and could go the two innings or hand it over to Benoit. Goofy.

Chicago Trib talking about the White Sox maybe trading Crain - even within the division for some talent (they specifically mentioned Detroit and Garcia, Smyly, and others). With a divisional lead, Detroit has to see how Al Al and Rondon can do before they think about trading talent for someone else. Smyly + Benoit + another decent reliever should suffice.

Yeah, they aren't getting Garcia or Smyly for Crain. That's hilarious.

I can see the Tigers trading some minor league pitching to include Crosby to bring in a closer though. I think Papeldoosh will be cheaper than you think, basically a couple of decent pitching prospects (which the tigers have) and take the contract. Not saying they should do it but I'm not against it either. I personally don't think they have what it takes in house even if Rondon and Al Al are good. They need a vet back there at minimum, so I think they pick up someone regardless whether they are a closer or not.

DFA Coke also please, especially if Jimmy is going to continue to NOT use him exclusively as a LOOGY.

So the Tigers want Valverde to accept a minor league deal to work on his stuff and maybe come back? GTFO. Just let that potato roll away, it's just not healthy for anyone. I even hope he comes back with someone else and is good, don;t care...I just cant take any more.

Hopefully the offer of a minor league contract is just to let Valverde save (no pun intended) face instead of being dumped outright. Detroit needs to give innings to their better prospects, not waste them on Valverde.

Good to see a big game for Cabrera. By his standards, he's been a bit quiet lately.

I've said nasty things about Coke, especially when they tried him out as a starter, but his improvement (yes, I said it) over what he was makes me want to keep him around, even as a LOOGY. Somebody mentioned bringing up Rondon as a set-up man and having Benoit as closer, and I think that's a good idea.

I would rotate the closing role between letting Smyly do 2-3 inning saves and Rondon/Benoit.

I would use Smyly like Willie Hernandez.

Fielder is awful.
He was tonight and he's probably worse than I thought he'd be, but I think he'll have a nice second half. He's 11th in the AL in OBP, 16th in OPS, 5th in RBIs and he's hit much better vs lefties. The homers aren't there (12) but I think he'll have a shot to lead the team once the humidity rolls in, we'll see. I'm guessing you have him in fantasy, I think he's a hold not a sell/trade. Smart guys are trying to buy him low right now IMO.

speakin of old willie, why don't more pitchers throw a screwball the thing was unhittable
It is kind of like the split-finger fastball. If you can master it, it is a deadly pitch. It is just a tough pitch to master. When Bruce Sutter had his split-finger going, it was the one of the most difficult pitches to hit ever.

Max has gotten 5 or more runs in 11 of his 15 starts. He is leading the league with an average of nearly 8 runs of support per game (7,84 per nine innings).
