Detroit – The fourth member of Brad Ausmus’ coaching staff is in place.
Wally Joyner, a sweet-swinging left-handed hitter in the 1980s and 1990s, will become the team’s new hitting coach, Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal reported Sunday night.
The Tigers have yet to confirm the hire.
Joyner joins third-base coach Dave Clark as new additions to the Tigers’ coaching staff, while pitching coach Jeff Jones and bench coach Gene Lamont are the holdovers.
Joyner replaces Lloyd McClendon, the Tigers’ hitting coach since 2007. Earlier this month, McClendon was named manager of the Seattle Mariners.
This would be the second hitting-coach job for Joyner, 51, who also served in that role with the San Diego Padres from 2007-08. He was the assistant hitting coach for the Philadelphia Phillies in 2013, before being moved over to first-base coach after the hiring of new manager Ryne Sandberg.
The Tigers also hired Mick Billmeyer as bullpen coach; he was with the Phillies in the same role in 2013.
Joyner played 16 years in the major leagues, mostly with the then-California Angels. He played mostly first base, and was an All-Star his rookie year, in 1986. His best season was 1987, when he hit. 285 with 34 home runs and 117 RBIs. For his career, he was a .289 hitter with 204 homers and 1,106 RBIs in 2,033
games
, including time with the Padres, Kansas City Royals and Atlanta Braves.
He does have some history with the Tigers, by the way. As a rookie, in August 1986, he broke up Walt Terrell’s no-hit bid with a double with two out in the ninth. Earlier in the season, against the Texas Rangers, he foiled a Charlie Hough bid, with one out in the ninth.
Following his career, he admitted to briefly using steroids, after consulting with Padres teammate Ken Caminiti.
The Tigers have yet to hire a first-base coach, bullpen coach and – if they choose to – an assistant hitting coach.
