11/20 Cubs & Blue Jays talk re: Halladay

The Cubs are one of the teams the Blue Jays have contacted regarding pitcher Roy Halladay. However, before Cubs fans start salivating at the prospect of the former Cy Young winner in the rotation with Ted Lilly, Carlos Zambrano, and Ryan Dempster, there's a catch. He's owed $15.75 million in 2010, and the Blue Jays want some of the Cubs' top prospects. No. 1, the team can't take on Halladay's salary. The Blue Jays apparently have a wish list and Milton Bradley is not on it. A player like highly regarded shortstop Starlin Castro most likely is, and the Cubs don't want to part with him, especially since they might only have Halladay for one year. The right-hander was 17-10 with a 2.79 ERA this season, and is a free agent after 2010. One thing the Blue Jays did make clear to the Cubs is they want to move Halladay this offseason.

I think this team is closer to repeating last year than competing for the playoffs. I don't think renting Halladay for a year (resigning him will be difficult) and emptying a farm system that finally seems to be producing some good talent is the best way to go. Castro is looking every bit like an All Star shortstop who might be starting for the Cubs by the end of this year. Cashner, Jackson, and Carpenter could all be fighting for positions in the starting rotation in 2011. The way Brett Jackson is described by scouts, he is looking like a solid defensive centerfielder whose potential offensively is somewhere between Mike Cameron and Jim Edmonds. Gaub, Parker, and Stevens could bolster the bullpen this year. Players like Hak-Ju Lee, Junior Lake, Logan Watkins, Ryan Flaherty, DJ LeMahieu, Kyler Burke, Dan Eun Rhee, Chris Huseby, Josh Vitters, Rafael Deolis, etc... all have legit major league potential.

On one hand you could say that with so many players, the Cubs should cash in and try to win now. But with the contracts already on the books, I think the Cubs should concentrate on the period of time when they need to replenish the major league roster and allow the prospects to emerge whenever they prove capable. The Cubs system is probably in the middle of the pack right now but the draft picks and signings over the last couple years have been a significant upgrade and the Cubs should concentrate on continuing on that path. Of course, not all of these players will make it but it seems like the future foundation is solid.

The Jays are idiots. They could have traded him for a king's ransom this past July but they tried holding teams hostage for a kings ransom plus. I'm not sure he'll get moved unless Toronto comes down on their demands.

Yup. He's already said, he isn't signing an extension and is waiting for Free Agency. You know he's gonna command 20-25M per year. There are maybe 4 or 5 teams that can pay that. As a Phillies fan, I can only hope he stays in the American League.

TRADE WINDS: According to an industry source, the Rangers and White Sox have shown interest in CF B.J. Upton, and the Mets and Braves have inquired about All-Star LF Carl Crawford. The Rays have said they're interested in discussing a long-term deal with Crawford, who is eligible to be a free agent after the 2010 season.

mets looking at sheets

Ben Sheets hasn't pitched in the majors in more than a year, but that will not keep the Mets from keeping an eye on the former All-Star right-hander this winter.

The oft-injured Sheets, who last pitched with the Brewers in 2008, has been sidelined since February because of surgery to repair the flexor tendon in his forearm, but he expects to be healthy by spring training.

METS BLOG

A major-league source confirmed that Sheets, 31, would be among a group of second-tier, relatively low-cost starting pitchers the Mets will consider this offseason while continuing their pursuit of top free-agent starter John Lackey.

Free-agent Joel Pineiro heads that group of middle-of-the-rotation starters being looked at by the Mets after Lackey. Jason Marquis and Randy Wolf also are in that group.
