Much better take...
Keri on Jeter
Top 5 SS. Top 6 Yankee. Top 50 player. Sounds right.
"Derek Jeter is great because he played a long time and had a lot of highlights," might be true but it sort of ignores the arguments against him.
He's a very good offensive shortstop whose defense was suspect and he's only a slam dunk HOFer because he played for the Yankees during a dynasty.
There are five Shortstops who retired after 1970 (i.e. that I have at least some memory of) that are obviously ahead of Jeter:
ARod (* half his career)
Ripken
Yount
Banks
Ozzie
Then you get to a cluster of three IMO:
Trammel
Jeter
Larkin
Trammel's not in, but Larkin is. And the problem for Jeter is that both of those guys were much better fielders who probably helped their teams win more games overall.
I'm not saying he doesn't belong (I think Trammel should get in too), just that the praise of the guy is over the top.
Is he a borderline HOFer? Yes. Is he a lock on the non-Yankee merits? No. And there's NO way he's a top-5 SS or a top-50 player of all-time. He's not even a top-5 shortstop of the last ~40 years.
