One reason Derek Anderson remains starter

September, 28, 2010

by Mike SandoArizona Cardinals quarterback Derek Anderson has completed only 52 percent of his passes overall this season, but his fourth-quarter numbers put him among the NFL leaders through three games.

The way Anderson has played late in games makes it easier for the Cardinals to keep him in their lineup even though coach Ken Whisenhunt has said the quarterback must improve.

The chart shows the five quarterbacks with the highest fourth-quarter ratings this season (minimum 15 attempts), according to ESPN Stats & Information. I've also included numbers for NFC West starters Alex Smith, Matt Hasselbeck and Sam Bradford.

Only a matter of time IMO. Would be surprised if Hall's not playing by Week 6. 2-1 & people locally are already calling for Hall. No reason to continue to trot him out there if he's not any sort of a field stretcher & continuing to air mail out routes as he's done all year long. It's pretty embarrassing how badly he's consistently off target. He doesn't look at all on the same page as Fitzgerald (when passes aren't 5 yards off target).

Cards aren't going anywhere unless Beanie has an All-Pro type season (no matter the QB).

I like to think he is a starter because the Cardinals cast the die with DA for 2010. The data behind the author's article just doesn't support his hypothesis. Number 3 on that list is Garrard and he has a whopping 74 yards, compared to Number one in Manning with 369 and number 5 in Romo with roughly 320. I see where he is getting at, but we are literally talking about a 30 minute time frame here...

Those 4th quarter numbers are ludicrously misleading. Derek Anderson was 7/9 for 110 and a score against St. Louis in the 4th quarter (disclaimer: against St. Louis). In week 2, despite being down by 34 points, Derek Anderson only mustered 3/4 for 25 yards against Atlanta. In week 3, Derek Anderson (aka Captain Clutch) was 0/3 for 0 yards in the 4th quarter. If the Cardinals are keeping Anderson in because of how great he is in the fourth quarter, then why haven't they given him more than four 4th quarter pass attempts in either of the past two weeks? How come over the last two weeks he's averaged 12.5 passing yards per game in the 4th (note: that pro-rates to 50 passing yards per game!)?

It just goes to show that you can prove anything you want if you've got a large enough pool of statistics and no scruples about how you use them.

Aaron J. Fentress of the Oregonian reports former Oregon State quarterback Derek Anderson signed with the Carolina Panthers, according to source.
Not sure this is done yet.@daringanttDarin Gantt

Panthers are bringing Anderson in for a workout, but no offer made much less accepted, per Hurney.

And honestly it doesn't mean a whole lot other than Newton might have to start game 1. In FF terms its not a big deal and that's why I bumped one of DA's old threads instead of a new thread, also picked ID because he has bringing the news right now in the SP.

Translated:

We'd rather let someone else take the hits this year instead of our shiny new toy.

Id assume cam will not be ready. . . And the smart move is to let him sit and learn

Anderson is one of the few QBs in the league that is less mobile than Cam Newton. If the Panthers have any issues with the O-line this year.....it will be nothing less than a complete disaster for that offense.

Not sure what the logic is here. If anything they need a tutor type vet QB to help Newton navigate his first season. Not someone like Anderson.

double  Didn't Cam have a bunch of rushing yds at Auburn?
That doesn't mean he's mobile from an NFL perspective. Newton won't be a runner in the NFL.
I can't believe you doubled down on this. He ran for over 100 yards a game. That's in the NCAA where they counts sack yardage against your rushing total. He was the 12th leading rusher in D1 last year - 7th among BCS conference players. He ran for more yards last year than Mike Vick ran for in his college career.

Lol this may take the lead for dumbest thing i have seen posted on this site... How u come to this is beyond me as this is so dumb i cant even comprehend...if this guy is not meant to be mobile then idk who is he has poor mechanics at best to throw the ball

But Anderson is certainly more mobile than say Jake Delhomme who is also one of the few QBs less mobile than Cam Newton. I'd rather have a Trent Dilfer back there personally. He's what comes to mind when I think of a mobile QB.

The only reason I can think of to bring in Anderson is to avoid a QB controversy.

After seeing what Anderson is capable of the fans will be screaming for Newton. And no matter how poorly Newton does no one will be wanting Anderson back in there.

If they brought in someone halfway decent it could cause headaches down the road.

Smart PR move considering they are pretty much all-in on Newton anyway.

They brought in Anderson to tutor Newton and Clausen on the west coast style offense that they will be using this year. Anderson played in that system and would be helpful in teaching it to the young QBs. The Panthers offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski knows Anderson due to being Anderson's OC in Cleveland when Anderson had his best year. Anderson is not coming in to takeover as starting QB.

Because of the lockout and Chudzinski I think Anderson starts the season at QB for the Panthers . Newton will get special plays to get his feet wet.
