Only Black Students Allowed on Field Trips (1 Viewer)

An Indiana school is giving third graders an inspiring early look at higher education with a series of field trips to local colleges — but the excursions are for black students only, which has angered some district parents.

“I just think it breeds intolerance and creates misunderstandings,” said parent Kelley Garing, speaking to KTRK regarding the field trips at the South Bend Community School Corporation. “It creates a divide.”

The series of trips — for black third graders in seven district primary schools — began Thursday with a visit to Ivy Tech, a community college. They’re the brainchild of David Moss, director for African-American student-parent services with the district, who tells KTRK that the trips aim to set a much-needed good example for the students.

Neither Moss nor a district spokesperson returned a phone call seeking comment from Yahoo Parenting. But, Moss told the local TV station, “I want these third graders to have the opportunity to think of themselves as college students. Our black kids are struggling academically.” The idea here, he said, is to “take them to a college campus, and have them meet with African-American college students, once again modeling the idea that, as a black person, college is a great place.”

Moss added, “It was not meant to be exclusionary, it was only meant to support and give these kids what they need to be positive about themselves and about their future. I was hired to look at the issues that are facing African-American kids in the South Bend Community School Corporation.”

In the U.S., blacks are catching up to whites when it comes to going to college, but there’s still a wide racial gap. “By definition, race-based admissions are only an issue at selective schools, which account for about a quarter of undergraduate enrollment,” notes a recent FiveThirtyEight blog. “But the racial gap in higher education goes far beyond those elite schools. Indeed, blacks and Latinos lose ground at every step of the educational process. They are less likely to finish high school, less likely to attend college and less likely to graduate when they get there. All of that adds up to a big gap in the number that ultimately matters most: ‘educational attainment,’ or the amount of school a person completes.” In 2013, it notes, about 40 percent of whites between the ages of 25 and 29 had a bachelor’s degree or more, compared to about 20 percent of blacks, 15 percent of Hispanics and 58 percent of Asians.

The South Bend Community School Corporation’s student population of 20,000 is 34.5 percent African-American, 37.1 percent white, and 17.7 percent Hispanic. And according to KTRK, parents of various racial backgrounds objected to Moss’s field trip plans this week.

“We should be able to do everything together and not separate,” noted parent Charles Yost. “We’re all supposed to have equal opportunity, right? We’re all supposed to have equal rights.” Deirdra Mullings, who has a son going on one of the field trips, said, “I feel like all kids should be going.”

But mom Erika Herron told the TV station that she understood Moss’s point. “I don’t think it’s a race issue, I think it’s giving black students a chance, letting them know that there’s something else out there besides being out here in these streets,” she said.

The part that jumped out to me (besides the obvious racism) is that Hispanics have even a lower percentage with a bachelor’s degree, yet they werent invited.

It was meant to benefit black students. The guy who set it up was dealing with black students issues, which is what he was hired to do. If you want to be mad at anyone be mad at the district which didn't hire anyone to help the Hispanic community. Pretty sure whites don't really need to go see white college kids to know college is something they can aspire to.

This reminds me of when white students complain that they can't join the black student clubs. Of course the director of African-American Student Services is going to design a program for African-American students. The question for me is whether any white kids made a sincere effort to go along, and were refused. I don't see that answered in the article and can't really be bothered to look further.

How would one make a 'sincere effort to go along'? Try to sneak in with black face? I am confused.

I dunno, they could just ask to go,no?

I think the school had their hearts in the right place, but it sends a bad message (to all the students, especially the black ones). I think when schools put in special programs they shouldn't target groups based on qualities (race, gender, disability) but instead on results (poor test scores, low attendance, lack of engagement).

I don't disagree with you. But when the program for kids with those results is all black kids, how quickly will people scream racism?

It's so silly for white people to get upset about this stuff.
It's also so silly for non-white people to get upset when events have a predominantly white audience, yet many people do just that and they often have the media support. That's really what white people are "upset" about. It's not so much about black people being explicitly allowed to have black only events (knock yourself out), it's more about white people being endlessly criticized for events or shows that are predominantly white not being diverse enough. If there wasn't that constant criticism from the other side, I'm guessing whites wouldn't feel the need to point out the hypocrisy.

It is easier argue racism when you say all black kids than all kids X number of failed classes. Plus, it won't be all black kids because there is a broad spectrum of kids that struggle in school, lack role models, lack motivation, etc.

I just can't sum up any energy to get upset about this. A few kids got to see colleges. A bunch of others didn't.

I can't really, either. But those that had to stay away from the trip have an eminently logical point, and dismissing the complaint seems sillier. The action (of taking only one race to see colleges) feels punitive and weirdly exclusionary. I just think we've come to a societal agreement where we don't hold kids responsible for racial politics and sentiments, and this seems to cross a line.

Regardless, this is pretty much a non-goer. I just understand parental complaints

There is nothing wrong with his idea - the mistake was doing it through the school. Do it privately on a Saturday and no one bats an eye.

Not silly at all. A lot of people want to live in a colorblind society, and stupid policies like this, though well intentioned, reinforce the notion that different rules apply to different people, based solely on the color of their skin. Ilov80's nailed it above. Make it about non-racial factors like test scores, family income levels, etc.

Agreed.

I think it is great giving kids goals to aspire to be better regardless of the skin color. However, saying only this group or that group can go sends a bad message. Just offer it up to all and get a second bus if a whole bunch of kids of all colors want to go.

IMO and this is only my opinion, if my kid was part of this, I think the bigger lesson would be attending this with all different races because that is the best life lesson.

when will the libtards get that reversing centuries of slavery, segregation, and institutional racism is an OVERNIGHT process. Hellooo...wake up sheeple.

Now imagine if white kids got their own field trip. :P

Edit: I don't understand why the entire 3rd grade couldn't go on the trip. Should we start encouraging white kids that they can be professional athletes?

Let's start forcing the NFL and NBA to field more white players for equality.

This.

I think they should have just planned something for the white students too.

Send the black kids to check out a college and throw a square dance for the rest of the kids at the school.

Everyones happy.

Some of you will go to any length to pretend like life is the same for everyone as it is for white folks in this country. What a joke that is.

Would you rather live in a world where life was the same for everyone?
Don't argue with them. They don't want equal opportunity and a colorblind society. They want to show the world how morally superior and enlightened they are.

And some of you would go to any length to isolate black folks for the population.

They only way you can support a program like this is if you believe that some people are inferior based on the the color of their skin and need an advantage. The son of the black lawyer is going to be going to college at just about the same rate as the son of the white lawyer. Would have been much easier to base this trip on test scores or free school lunch participation.

Exactly. And nobody said that conditions in society were at all the same for different races. That was simply projection.

This is how white folks from the left beat the "nuance" drum and signal to other white people how enlightened they are. Never mind that we just had a field trip of children and only one race was invited. :lmao:

Bottom line...regardless of backlash or current PC or whatever...

Schools should know better.

You do something like this and you are going to catch hell.
