need cam newton news. whatever insight you guys have. injury popping up like it did yesterday combined with him getting an mri is very sketchy to me.

about to make a big trade to acquire him and am wondering how safe that is to do at this point. thanks

Stevie Johnson is listed as probable, but after this tweet last night I'm concerned about his ability to contribute this week even if he plays:

Can't even lie man I'm not feeling good at all... Feel like I've been kicked in the stomach by Big Foot wit Polo boots on!

from Tristan Cockcroft - ESPN

Updates/analysis (most recent first)

Nate Washington active (11:38 a.m. ET): The Tennessee Titans' official Twitter feed reports that WR Nate Washington (hip, questionable) is active. Consider him a No. 3 fantasy wide receiver in what's one of his tougher matchups against the Panthers.

Jared Cook active (11:37 a.m. ET): The Tennessee Titans' official Twitter feed reports that TE Jared Cook (knee, questionable) is active. His injury, like Jermaine Gresham's, could have the Titans easing up on Cook in terms of targets this week. Consider him a No. 2 tight end as well, and a less attractive one even than Gresham.

Jason Avant to start? (11:34 a.m. ET): Both ESPN's Adam Schefter and Dan Graziano of the NFC East Blog report that Jason Avant is expected to start for the Eagles. Remember, the Eagles could merely start in a three-wide receiver set. Again, "starter" status means little. It's Avant you should target as a sneaky No. 3 fantasy option.

Donald Lee inactive (11:31 a.m. ET): The Cincinnati Bengals' official Twitter feed reports that TE Donald Lee (foot, out) is inactive.

Jermaine Gresham active (11:31 a.m. ET): The Cincinnati Bengals' official Twitter feed reports that TE Jermaine Gresham (hamstring, questionable) is active. He's only a No. 2 fantasy option; the Bengals, accounting for his injury, might merely lean more on their wide receivers.

Steve Smith (PHI) to start (11:27 a.m. ET): Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports that Steve Smith will start for the Eagles. Go figure. All this does is show that, beyond Jeremy Maclin, the Eagles' wide receivers will be somewhat unpredictable. But to be clear: Smith is the Eagles wide receiver I like least of the three potential fill-ins (Avant the most). After all, "starter" status means little.

DeSean Jackson to be inactive (9:17 a.m. ET): ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that WR DeSean Jackson will be inactive for the Eagles. According to Schefter, Jackson missed the Eagles' team meeting Saturday morning, a total no-show. Jeremy Maclin gets a slight bump in fantasy value, as he's a near-guarantee to dominate the team in targets going up against the woeful Cardinals defense. It's difficult to tell who will get the start at flanker; it might be Jason Avant simply because he has been a spot starter for the team in the past and is fourth on the Eagles in targets. In a deeper league he'd be worth a look considering the matchup. Riley Cooper should also play more snaps, and Steve Smith might get increased use out of the slot.
