Otis fad diet thread — yoga, fasting, and kevzilla walking on🚶‍♂️ (3 Viewers)

Gary is a anti-thermo. James is the biggest thermo guy in here.  Or at least the most active.

I'm not on board with the insulin theory that Gary has. So James and I share some common ground here but not for the same reasons.
Yea, I'm all about calories in < calories out being the be-all-end-all method of fat loss.  I do however recognize that some specific mix of nutrient intake can impact fat loss a little differently in the short run, but in the long run, to me, it's all about how much fuel your body gets versus what it needs.

I actually follow and agree with a lot of what @culdeus posts.  Excepts when he posts about how hard it is to gain weight.  Then I kind of want to punch him.

Why does James hate Gary?
I won't speak for James, but I think Gary Taubes is great at explaining why it was stupid to demonize dietary fat ... but then he turns around and makes even stupider arguments himself in an attempt to demonize carbs.

At least he seems to be focusing on refined sugars more recently instead of carbs in general, but he'll always have the mechanism wrong as long as he sticks to the carbohydrate-insulin theory of obesity. (Dang, the full article was available a few days ago. Now it's just the abstract. A link to the full pdf can be found here ("Sci-hub link to full pdf").)

Exactly what I was going to say.   :bowtie:

or what he said....

I think you maybe didn't quite make it clear that Taubes actually designed this experiment, and it went 180 from how he wanted it to.  I think someone gave Taubes a #### ton of money to basically study diet stuff for the rest of his life.  Talking like 50 Million bucks.  This was his first go at something.  He vowed to publish the results no matter what, so he stuck to his word.

"Reasonable ad hoc modifications of the carbohydrate–insulin model have been proposed, but the revised model relies on hypothesized effects of carbohydrates and insulin to alter energy intake and spontaneous physical activity, both of which remain to be demonstrated experimentally."
I think everyone knows what they will find.  I mean there is a reason people coin the term "70s big" for lifting bros that used insulin and haggen-das to get gigantic.  If they need a volunteer for this I'm all in.

I went nuts today and probably hit 1500 calories.  Disappointing.

Breakfast: coffee

Lunch: protein bar

Dinner:Salmon, rice and vegetables dish from mUnchery, with a side wedge salad with bacon and dressing.

Also nibbled a couple of cookies for dessert

That said, I'd love to drink a bottle of wine and destroy our snack pantry.  I'm doing neither.

That takes me back to my smoking days.   That couple hours after getting high and just going to town on all the snacks I could find in the house was pure bliss.   Boy did I hate myself the next day though.

Ha, this actually came up on the show. Rogan mentioned the old body builders using insulin.

171 this morning.

Chicken quesadillas for dinner last night followed by scotch.

Orangetheory Fitness this morning for the first time since the half marathon Sunday.

Chicken enchiladas for lunch.

Tacos for dinner.

Totes huge vodka cran for dessert. With lime.

Does anyone have an awesome guacamole recipe to share?

I've been making it frequently, and while I'm moderately pleased, I feel it is somewhat lacking something.

- Avocados

- Tomato

- Jalapeno

- Fresh squeezed lime

- Salt

- Cilantro

What am I missing?
Onion

TMI so reader beware.  I think I need more fiber - not constipated but it wasn't comfortable this morning.  I'm still surprised that I keep losing as much as I have.  It will definitely slow down but for now I have no reason to not just keep doing what I'm doing.

I'm so close. Weighed in at 201.2 after my workout yesterday. Was up to 202.2 this morning, but still... I'm so close to breaking the 200 mark.

I seem to be treading water this week.  Weighed in Monday at 324.2.  Tuesday was down to 321.4.  Wednesday up to 322.4.  Today I was back to where I started the week at 324.2.

Time to refocus and get the back sliding under control.

And while I get to enjoy plain chicken breast and salad for dinner my son posted to Facebook that he, and I quote: "just had the best meal of my life at William Frachot.  Two Michelin Stars."  Did I forget to mention he happens to be on a week long gastronomic tour of France (Champagne, Dijon and Burgundy regions and a day in Paris) with his culinary school this week.  Glad somebody is enjoying his food this week.  They've done restaurants, wineries, champagneries (?), cheeseries and a duck farm (he's dying to try the fresh Foie Gras).  I'm a little, ok a lot, jealous.

Stop weighing yourself every day. It will just drive you mad.

I agree.  This is a terrible thing to do.  I know from doing it before that my weight fluctuates greatly during the week from day to day.  A weekly weigh in makes the most sense for me, if I do it more often I find myself eating real well for 4 straight days, weighing in and being up a couple pounds and getting frustrated.

I'm expecting a much lower weight loss this coming week, not due to eating worse, I've been on plan all week so far, but last week was a much bigger loss than normal and if I'm down 2 pounds I'll be really happy with that progress.  Almost expect to be flat, but as the weeks go on and if I stick to it, the weight loss will come.

I'd go crazy weighing myself everyday and it wouldn't help me to stay eating healthy.

I resisted the ice cream in the freezer (along with the wife wanting to make cookies) last night and ran 3.5 miles at the gym. I definitely feel a little faster now. Gym is still pretty busy.

I actually like weighing myself daily.  It shows me what a good day does for me versus a bad day.  And it shows what a "let loose weekend" can do.  Etc. You have to take it with a bit of a grain of salt and understand it's not perfect, could be water weight and other issues shifting a couple pounds here or there.  But I've found it shows a trend, and motivates me.

Maybe you should try weighing yourself hourly.

We have the same type of scale. If you want anything that resembles a trend on body fat you pretty much have to weigh daily as there is far too much fluctuation on that parameter.  It doesn't mean you have to look at the results though.  Something like a weekly average on BF% is a much better metric than weight total, and does at least require IMO using the scale every 24hrs.  Weigh daily, review weekly, that assumes your scale tracks online or whatever for you.  If not then forget it and look in the mirror and :flex:

had too many beers last night as buddy is still struggling with relationship issues. Told him that's the last night I can do the go out and drink thing.. but he's welcome to hang at the house and talk anytime he needs. I can already tell this is going to be a lateral week :(

B: 2 HB Eggs
S: Greek Yogurt
L: Leftover Shrimp & Chicken Creole
D: No ####### idea right now....

@Otis

What's that ice cream you had delivered to you recently?  They have a 4 pint pack of vanilla bean at costco.   Even though its only like 250 calories for the whole pint, I passed since I'll probably just eat all 4 pints in one sitting.  Any good?

Halo Top... and yes, it's good

Any potato guys have an Actifry? 1/2 tbsp oil and your french fries taste like french fries. Like, good chip truck fries.
Bought one at Sam's club for like $110. Made homemade tater tots, but they turned out more like German potato Knoedel, or something. Had them with brown gravy. Delicious. Trying out fries today.

I'm going to take the other side of this debate.  I like weighing daily because if I'm at the high end of my fluctuation on the official weigh in day, I going to be OK with it.  Week 3 Monday I might be at the low end of the range.  I might drop 2 pounds over the week, but be at the high end of the range on Monday week 4.  For example, I was 259.x Monday morning and 258 at my evening weigh in time.  Tuesday evening I was 255.x and then back up to 259.x this morning.  It would really have been a bummer to be at 255.x on Monday and then weigh in at 258.x next Monday after busting it all week, not knowing that I'm fluctuating over that range.

I am going to try this.  I do not crave sweets too often, but if it's only 240 calories a pint, might be a nice treat once in a while.
You have been doing so amazing I really don't want you to #### this up.  I personally do not think this is a good idea.  Maybe one of the nutrition experts can weigh in on it.

This is excellent exercise and highly recommended. Not only will you burn calories from the treading motion, but also just from being in water that is below your core body temperature.
:lmao:

I weigh every day - I think I've lost weight 24 of 25 days - very motivating.  I get why it's not a great idea but any time I've lost a decent amount I always weigh daily.

Thanks,  I would appreciate any insight on if this is any good for you.
Hopefully someone else comes along that's more knowledgeable.  I recognize that different methods can succeed for different people.  My objection is not to Halo Top ice cream in particular.  I just think that the only way to have long term success is to change your tastes.

I read somewhere that Feb 8 is when people officially give up on their resolutions. It was based upon comparing the number of gym visits vs. McDonalds hamburgers sold.

By a complete coincidence that is the day I return to Denmark after two years in Peru. Not sure hw much diet I have in me the first couple of weeks while settling back into the old country and its temptations...

As a long term strategy I agree with you.  However, for now at least, the daily weight measurements are helping me stay on track.  The days where I lost weight are providing incentive to continue what I'm doing.  The days when I added weight help me to refocus and assess where I may be going wrong.  Since all this is relatively new to me the daily feedback that the weigh ins everyday provide is helping me overall.  In the long run, when I have a better handle on what I'm doing, I'll cut back to twice a week (Monday and Friday mornings) weigh ins and eventually weekly.

Thanks for the continued support and helpful advice from everybody.  As with most things, this isn't a one size fits all and each individual needs to find what works for them.

FYI.  This is what my son had that constituted the best meal he ever ate:

"It started with amuse bouches of a quail egg, escargots, rabbit mousse and parsley ham. The first course was a scallop and foie gras ravioli with a truffle scented cream sauce. Second course was fish that was cooked under a heat lamp for 15 minutes so it was just cooked, it had a curry sauce and a roasted carrot. Third course was venison with a brown jus, black currants and a celeriac gratin. Fourth course for me was a caramelized apple roll up with an apple sorbet, caramel chips and a mousse of some sort. Then post meal little mignardize of local produce and chocolates. There was also a post meal drink of apple juice and a cassis mousse."

Sorry if this isn't an appropriate post in a weight loss thread.  LOL
