I'm probably going to purchase a gray slim fit suit this spring to get ready for summer weddings. Are there any trends that I should be aware of or avoid?
Do's:- 2 button (avoid the recent fashion resurgence of double breasted)- make sure sleeve length shows approx. 1" of shirt cuff- get a colorful pocket squareDon'ts:- no cuffs on your pants- no pleats on your pants
This. This was a step for me, since I'm 49 and historically years behind any fashion trend. Have always had cuffs and pleats, had some 3 button or double breasted, but just re-did wardrobe after weight loss and followed suggestions above to a tee. Much cleaner look and have really grown to like it.
I'm wearing cuffs and pleats right now. Guess I need a :bag: .Can I get no pleats without a 'slim fit'? The slim fit always seems too tight in my thighs. Also, I'm I sacrificing ball room with no pleats?
Screw slimfit... Hate it, my legs never fits in anything. My legs are too big for regular size - I always have to "mix". Also, don't agree with a shorter sleeve jacket. But I'm just an average schlub

I always need to ask the tailor to let it out a bit around the hip and package area. :FBG:

Very slick. What's up with the double right pockets? I could do without the extra.

I learned my lesson year ago, so I won't have cuffed pants. And I'm anti-pleats.

Oh, and skinny ties to go with a slim suit?
1 - It's a throwback to old suits. Called a ticket pocket (where it was used to hold tickets!).2 - Tie width should generally match lapel width.

Also, I recommend indochino It's pretty good quality for the price. Since you're all fbg's you should be able to land a high quality suit from Italy. But for those on a budget indochino will do nicely. Shoulders are a problem for them from what I've read but their customer service is solid. I have one suit from them I bought some time ago and it's held up nicely.

Thanks for the link.So I'm overhauling my formalwear wardrobe, and will pick up a few suits. What colors should get (I already have a black one for funerals)? I'm pretty sure I'm getting a medium gray one. Should I go with various shades of gray? I'm not a fan of dark/navy blue and tan/brown suits don't seem versatile enough for different events and occassions.

I'd rather land a high quality Italian suit for the same price.....granted I don't know Indochino and haven't heard of them so I can't speak to their quality. When I'm spending $600 on a suit, I want Paul Smith/Armani quality.

Navy blue is incredibly versatile. That or charcoal are the two most basic suits (yes, even over black). They can be worn in most settings without being too serious or too casual. Navy blue and charcoal should be your picks.Major - most reviews are positive of indochino. The consensus seems to be it's good quality for the price but sometimes they really send out a clunker and customers service is usually good but sometimes difficult. I recommend checking them out in more detail. Not best if money is no object, but they're stylish and hold up well for the price.

What about these?

:trash:Valentino knock off
I shoulda read the thread. I skipped to page 3 and didn't see that these had already been discussed on page 2. So these are knock offs? Is Gino the less famous,half-brother?
something like that.....suit is poorly made and cut...def not Valentino
I hope not.
Props to Major. The suit was (is) crap. Going thru the return process now.

wish I could've helped prior to your order. Feel free to ask questions in the :style: thread if you need any further guidance. I'm all about getting the best quality at the cheapest price.

the polyester blend should have been your first warning

Are the shiney silver suits celebs seem to love made of polyester? I don't think any of us could get away with wearing those to work or even a wedding.

Never thought of gilt, will have to check it out.bluefly.com is a good option also, and while the selection and pricing varies, I've seen Hickey Freeman's as low as $500, though usually around $600-700.

You fools should read the :style: thread....been pumping Gilt for the past 5 years or so. Their sales aren't as good as they once were as they're charging more and I don't see them getting as much quality product as they used to. Still miles ahead of bluefly which doesn't have great discounts on designer duds unless it's a year end sale. The stuff that is on sale at blue fly (60% off or more) is normally rubbish or not on trend.

Ive seen a number of Hickey Freemans for 50-60% off, sometimes 65% off - and I dont know many Hickey Freemans that are either rubbish or not on trend (pretty straight forward, traditional styles that don't change much at all year to year)

yeah, Hickey Freeman is on sale everywhere...not really hard to find a suit at $500. I got mine for $350 at Neiman's Last Call.

What is Neiman's last call (outlet type store or sale?).I do love HF suits and mine is wearing after a number of years of hard wear.

Neiman Marcus outlet store. They have an online store as well. Hickey Freeman is a classic brand made with quality. I prefer their Hickey label instead which is cut slimmer and a more updated look with same quality. You can't lose with either though.

BAR III - Charcoal pinstripe

Picked up this suit for a wedding two weeks from now. Macy's had a sale this weekend and the suit including tax and alterations (shorten sleeves ($20), Sides In ($18), plain hem ($15), and waist, seat in($18) = $71 is that normal?) cost $340.

Tried on the Alfani Red and it didn't fit as well as this and the shoulder padding killed it for me. Can't wait to see how it fits after alteration. Was trying to decide between this dark charcoal vs the lighter one. Went with the dark suit because I felt it was more a bit more versatile.

Still don't have a shirt to wear underneath, but thinking of either solid pink or a pastel green shirt with a slim black tie and or bow tie. Also considering doing a plaid pink/green shirt as well.

I'm open to suggestions and not afraid of being a little more adventurous with the shirt and neck wear.

Don't do a solid pink or green shirt underneath. A plaid shirt with black bowtie could be acceptable. Or just a white shirt with black tie and get a colorful pocket square to give you the :style: edge you're looking for.

I have a hard time finding affordable <$250 suits in my size (36R slim fit). I was hoping to get a light/med gray or navy blue one for a summer wedding but ended up getting a charcoal gray one after checking Macy's, Jos A Bank, Hollywood Suit Outlet, 3-day suit brokers and eventually purchasing at Men's Warehouse.

I like the suit I got, but the selection sucks at this end of the size range.

probably the fabric and cut of the suit too. you might be spending a lot in alterations. i can understand the reluctance to spend a lot of money on something you might only wear only occasionally (once a month or less frequently) but, at that price point, you're not getting a lot of bang for your buck. opening your wallet up to, say, $400 will give you much better options. you'll feel better, more confident and look better in what you wear if you know you got real value in this purchase.

I think I lucked out a bit in that I only spent $28 on getting the pants altered. The fabric (100% 150 wool) and cut of the jacket fits just right off the rack.

Do you guys unstitch your pockets yourself? I have a minisewing kit that I can do this without messing it up, I THINK.

A female coworker suggested leaving the front side pockets closed and only opening the breast and inside pockets. I probably won't be using the outter pockets anyway, but I would feel dumb if I need to use them in an emergency and they're still sewn shut.

Thoughts?

I always have. It was suggested that they could bunch up and not lay flat and it would look bad. So I guess I could see why one would not want to risk that for a feature that they don't use.

Don't like the look in general. Solid colored dress shirts under suits looks cheap and cheesy.

So that they will always lay flat.

Yah, I usually wear patterns whenever I dress up but thought for a wedding I'd tone it down some or if I wore a patterned bow tie it would help make it not look so crazy. Gonna shop for some bowties/ties online and then go from

there once i get the suit.

I recently hit up the Men's Wearhouse for one of those two-for-one deals, and then Burlington Coat Factory for a couple of suits off the rack at 100 or 200 bucks a pop. These are all fairly cheap suits. But the difference is I only bought the ones that fit me perfectly, flat front pants, well cut jacket, etc. A little tailoring and they look as good as my $1000 custom made suit. Better even. Bottom line? Who cares about the quality or the fabric -- if a suit fits perfectly, it will look good regardless. I'll no longer be buying expensive suits.

The other thing I've learned is in terms of tailoring -- the old dudes at Men's Wearhouse and places like it don't know squat about style. They'll try to convince you to buy something a size too big, because these guys are all convinced its still the 80's or 90's. Get something that fits snug, and have him tailor the pants shorter than he tries to, and the sleeves can be shorter than he thinks, because showing some cuff is a good look.

That's all I've got gents. Learn from my mistakes.
I had an intern start at our company about a week ago. Nice guy, grad student, incredibly smart. The first day, he showed up in business casual. I told him "that's not gonna fly around here," and asked him to promptly get with the program. He's been showing up in t-shirts and shorts every day since...as he should. :P Speaking of "learning from mistakes," it took me eight years to learn this lesson, but here it goes: Do what I love for a career/profession, and don't waste even one hour in said career/profession wearing overly expensive and uncomfortable clothes. So I figured out a way to create a company where all of us (15 people now) work from home studios, and wear whatever we want to wear to work every day. Heck, nothing at all...if that floated a few people's boats. I don't care...as long as they don't do any video chats with clients. ;)

I wasted thousands of dollars on uncomfortable shirts, pants, jackets, and ties in my 20s. Then I got creative and smart...and a whole lot more comfortable. I'll still wear a tie once or twice a year...and maybe a nice button-down shirt and dress pants 7-8 times/year. But that's it. Otherwise it's all t-shirts, shorts, sweatshirts, and jeans. LEARN FROM MY MISTAKES. Don't blow thousands on fabric and designer labels...just to feel as though you measure up to others around you. Life's too short.

It's ok. The jacket is cut way too long and I didn't' catch that in my first visit to the tailor and have been meaning to fix it. Otherwise not bad for a ridiculously cheap suit. I won't win any fashion awards with it, but for a middle of the week, I-don't-give-a-crap-today suit, it fits the bill just fine. It was 89 bucks, can't expect a ton more than that...

Is 36 generally is the smallest most stores carry? How do little/skinny guys get affordable suits?
Try the boy's section.
Seriously wondering how small you are if you need less than a 36.5'6" and 138 lbs and I wear 38S.
I don't need less than a 36. I need a 36R slim.I'm 5'9, 150lb. I run, play basketball and don't look like a slob. I won't apologize for making the average obese American look bad.

Gotcha. Just crazy because I'm not a big guy to begin with and when I tried on suits recently the 36 was very tight.

do less cardio, eat more and hit the gym you pansy

For anyone on the market for cheap suits, I took a flyer on one of these 89 dollar numbers on eBay

Caravelli

For 89 bucks, I figured why not, and the reviews seemed near uniformly positive.

I haven't worn it yet, but it came in today, and I took it up to the tailor to get it hemmed etc.

Holy smokes did this exceed my expectations. The suit just feels expensive. It's heavy wool, and feels like great quality. The inside of the jacket is just great quality with tons of features, nice stitching, and a great look.

I'm trying to remain objective until I've got it back and actually wear it for a day, but I was honestly blown away by this thing when I unpacked it. If it wears as well as it looks/feels, it will be a no-brainer or me to go back on Amazon and pick up a few more of these. So money.
Just bumping this. Got the suit back from the tailor today. Nice fit, great quality. A no-brainer IMO.

Just got a nice Hickey suit for $300. I'd much rather buy a modern looking suit that will last as opposed to looking like a cheap slob in $99 suit. It may not show in year 1 or 2 but in years 3-10, get back at me chief.

Why would I want to look like you, all chubby and gross? I eat 2800-3200 calories a day, probably more than you, tubs.

Hard to believe you picked up a suit for the cost of a bar tab.

 all that work and you still look like a girlie man? I guess some of us are just blessed with genetics //40R

I have a hard time finding affordable <$250 suits in my size (36R slim fit). I was hoping to get a light/med gray or navy blue one for a summer wedding but ended up getting a charcoal gray one after checking Macy's, Jos A Bank, Hollywood Suit Outlet, 3-day suit brokers and eventually purchasing at Men's Warehouse.I like the suit I got, but the selection sucks at this end of the size range.
Do you have a K & G near you? They have a huge inventory and seemingly 20-40 suits in every size.

Need some advice from the StyleGuys.

I have a dark green Armani sport coat, 2 button (dark brown same for sleeve buttons), no vent. Not sure if I should keep it or take it to Goodwill. What color shirt & pants would go best with it, and is it even cool to wear green sport coats? Haven't worn it in years, and when I did I usually wore it with jeans and a white/creme shirt, no tie.

TIA
