Overused excuse for why a player may fail (1 Viewer)

In several player threads and discussions, I often see this excuse as to a reason why a player is not very good:

"If Team X (insert Dolphins, Raiders, Bills, or any not very good team) cut or traded him, then they must be really bad".

We see this all the time. Saw it in discussions of Zach Thomas being cut. We heard it when Moss left Oakland. Seen it with Kevin Jones getting cut by Detroit. The list is pretty long. Superficially it may make sense (not even good enough for a horrible team), but I don't really agree with this at all. First of all, there's a reason these teams struggle. Part of it is their evaluation of talent or lack thereof. This sticks out to me when looking at Welker leaving Miami, for example.

In addition to this, it's much more of a red flag to me when a GOOD team releases or trades a player, like the Colts or the Patriots. With these guys being such good evaluators of talent, when a team like the Colts gets rid of Jason David, that should be a big red flag. Well, we can all see why now (if it wasn't obvious before).

In the end, I just don't see how a player getting cut by a bad team is a reason to downgrade them. I think it's much worse when it comes from a good team, which we rarely see mentioned. This is, of course, when it's related more to talent and not salary or cap reasons.

I think you have to look at it case by case basis.

Thomas will be a 35yo undersized ILB with concussion issues.

Kevin Jones last had a good season in 2004 and has had more than his own fair share of injury issues.

Moss is Moss... I'm not sure he's indicative of any kind of trend. He's just an all-world player that had given up on his team. He didn't leave the raiders because he didn't have anything left.

I absolutely look at the players that are beating out the player being released. In DET when Charles Rogers and Mike Williams were getting beaten out by waiver wire guys I don't know how you don't take that into consideration. I'm not holding my breath on either of them just because Millen often makes mistakes.

IMO, I would be more concerned when mediocre teams cut mediocre players. The theory being that if you couldn't stick with TEAM X then how good could you be? That sometimes gets compunded when someone was a reserve on TEAM X (a poor one) but get signed for big money as a free agent on TEAM Y (a competitive one).

It's called talent. The better teams have them, the weaker teams do not.So if the Colts cut there backup QB, that Qb will be in a better spot to play.If a bad team cuts a player, well if He can't play for that team were can He play?Good question keep them coming.

I hear ya...it's all about situation. A teams record is not a reflection of one player's talent, but the team as a whole.

2 years ago the saints didn't want Dante Stallworth anymore. That was a team coming off a 2 win season. Stallworth isn't a superstar, but I bet you about 15 other teams wouldn't mind having him.

Imagine how bad we would be saying Brandon Jacobs is if he had played in a Martz style offense.

Are you serious here? = I can't tell if you are serious when you post or just trying to stir the pot

Getting cut is a lot different than being traded. And if you get cut for salary cap reasons then that is a mitigating factor. There are a few positions where good players are never cut - CB, DT, and OL.

But I don't agree with the argument about bad teams not being able to evaluate their talent. Even if they are worse at evaluating talent, they have had the player for a while and should know everything about him. It is possible that they get rid of the player because he is a cancer or he does not fit the system, but if he has any value he will be traded and not cut.

So I'd say the reason a player gets cut are:

1) He stinks

2) Doesn't fit the scheme and doesn't have much value

3) Bad attitude and not much value

4) Too much money against the cap

5) Sleeps with owners teenage daughter

I think I've got a pretty good handle on that one.
