Ozark on Netflix (5 Viewers)

del Pino: No, not really. The only thing we did was that we shot everything at 4,400 Kelvin temperature, interiors and exteriors, day and night likewise. And because we tried different color temperatures when we were doing tests, we saw that using that setup would give us the most ability to keep that consistent cooler grayish/blueish palette. But no filtration.

This tells me they are using LED's vs. standard HMI/Tungsten lighting. LED's allow for Kelvin adjustment. Standard lighting does not unless you apply gels to warm or cool them. Since there are no camera filters and no gels, it's LED's. As a Set Lighting Technician and Gaffer in Hollywood, I myself can't stand LED lighting. I'm old school. The units are too soft and don't allow for cutting and shaping. Nevertheless, it's my favorite show right now. I binge watched the entire season ... I think I finally went to sleep around 6am last Saturday.

This series is acted and directed very well.  But the writing is downright lazy.  The scenes involving/showing/mentioning the baby are the best example of what I'm talking about.

Also...

Writers room: "We need to advance the story somehow...I know, let's have the kids do something stupid"

The robot baby really bummed me out. Not sure if it was a budget issue or a SAG/AFTA issue, but using a real baby would have been ideal.

Everyone:  I’m on Episode 1-5.

You: Oh, that’s before Buddy dies.

Me: Familiar with the spoiler tags?

Or am I wrong about the etiquette in these threads? I thought this was for general discussion without giving away plot specifics without said tags.
I think you take your chances when you enter a thread about a show on Netflix - where all episodes are out.

I don't think there is an internet convention on when you are allowed to talk about details in full-season shows, and I don't think placing every plot discussion in spoilers is the way to go.

PS - Buddy has literally been on his death bed since he was introduced in Season 1.  Not exactly a spoiler that he dies.

Went out with his boots on

I didn't care for season 2 all that much.  Few things seem just too unbelievable and convenient.  Don't read below if you haven't seen the entire season.

Random thoughts

Cade when not backing down to the cartel.  The ####### cartel.  Oh, they don't know our land, it will be dark out, we have a lot of firepower.  Dude, it was Cade, Wyatt, Three and Ruth against the cartel ffs.  Maybe, just maybe be realistic here.

The attack against the Snells by the cartel.  hundreds of bullets fly and only one person gets hit in the car?  Ever see the tollbooth scene in the Godfather?  Come on, no one should have gotten out of there alive.

When Marty and Helen go up to Jacob to tell them that it's government land via riparian act or whatever.  The Snells could have lawyered up there and given them all kinds of hassles but Jacob just rolled over and was like, oh okay.  Come on.

They really went nowhere with Rachel's character this year and she oh so conveniently becomes a full blown addict in a matter of months?  I dunno, kind of disappointed with where that arc went.

I really liked Petty and Cade's characters, I think they'll be tough to replace.  Darlene is good, but I just have a hard time believing a 60-something woman is so intimidating.

And everything with Wilkes is so contrived, house of cardsish, but this guy is not the President of the U.S., he's just one rich businessman. He has no enemies?  Oh Marty there is no way this gambling commission is going to approve your casino, it's too far gone for me to step in.  Oh, Okay Wendy, you got your Casino.  It's like he's the fixer, but just too unbelievable for me.  And he is over leveraged and only the Byrdes are aware of this fact?

And then the end, where they are out. I mean, the plans are set, everything is in order, and then Wendy's like, :nonofinger:  And they are staying.

Oh, and that whole episode with Mason was just about 55 minutes too long.

My initial thought, when viewing in real-time, was that this was a planned attack somehow contrived by Darlene. When Jacob didn't die...made Plan B necessary.

Hmmm, I always look for the symbols in the show but didn't realize that.

Also didn't realize that James Delos in Westworld was the old dude here.
Ok, I was kind of thinking that while watching, but wasn't totally sure.  Later thought that it was not actually the same guy, but never got around to looking it up.

I didn't confirm it by looking it up. Maybe it isn't.

I'm avoiding this thread. Only still watched the first episode.

Having a real tough time slogging my way thru S2. It quickly became a bad game of Corruption Bumpercars. Love me some corrupt ways & all but not when everybody's in the ratpile cuz i dont care about anybody anymore.

Sorry, didn't think about it.  Put spoiler tags in now.

Terrible, terrible writing. Horribly unlikeable characters (every single one of them). Unrealistic and cliché... everything.

This is lazy, bad TV. I was really hoping for something decent, but it's really laughable to compare it to Breaking Bad just because they both involve drugs.

S2 also got a full injection of girl power! sauce.  All female characters deeply explored or otherwise more fully developed at the expense of portraying most of the men as either ineffective, wimpish, easily outwitted / manipulated, or cartoonish (sometimes multiples of each).  Marty's son got a little play, but he's essentially the kid in the weed commercial saying "I learned it by watching you, dad....I learned it from watching YOU"

Also...Garner is a great example of some characters being perfect in small doses.  She's dynamic, and her performances are even more powerful when the writers allow the audience to fill in the blanks.  She's given WAY too much emoting to do this season, and she got a little exposed.  I like the little fighter that shows some heart when push comes to shove from S1.  Her character was so smart and so tough in season 1 that if felt like a cop-out for the writers to go 'nah brah, she's actually a little daddy's girl that's just putting up a front...she's nowhere near as smart or tough as you thought"

Nobody is (or has ever been) afraid of Laura Linney.

Without giving anything away, Season 1 was very good at Marty having to constantly justify his existence based on his value to the mob in an ever-changing set of circumstances. It always felt like there was a 51% reason for the cartel to keep him around.  Every low percentage shot to save the game was to maintain that equation, and you could feel that stress and route for him.  I cannot see how the rewards outweigh the risks.  Makes the most sense that they’d kill him, and that he’d seek protection.  Hard to get past that.
Precisely. S1,Marty does it to save himself & family. S2 feels like he's doing it to make a life for himself and that exigency does not excuse the corruption, clever or no. And the cartel can't cut bait as you point out they ab should, cuz the bait are the stars of the show.

S2 is life in a whorehouse - everybody screws everybody else without relief, and the only halfway redeeming story is the former child whore trapped in whore ways who believes salvation lies in becoming a better ####. Swimming for or against this tide is decidedly not a pleasurable television experience.

Hmmm...I disagree.  In S2 I think Marty is still acting to try and protect his family, but more than just immediate survival, he is looking to scheme his way out of the situation completely.  Wendy, on the other hand, seems to be getting some level fulfillment out of all this with Wilkes and Helen stroking her ego.

This show is all filmed in Georgia.
Not all the shots but I think most or all of the scenes with actors in it are.  The Blue Cat is about a mile from my house.

They have redone the building now and turned it back in to a restaurant so I’m assuming it won’t be around for S3.

Finished the season.  All-in-all, a worthwhile watch and I’m onboard for S3, but will probably wait for reviews before committing.  Not chomping at that bit for it like I was after the first season though.  To be fair, there was a lot of brilliance mixed into this season and some promise for where it may go.  I feel like I need to hit an inhaler after watching 4 episodes in the past day.
I think season 3 should be interesting.

DON'T READ IF YOU HAVE NOT WATCHED SEASON 2

1.  FBI will now take a much more active role in the show, presumably with a new lead FBI agent who is not psychotic.  I think Wendy will be the target of the new investigation Cade will be tied to the murder, but then someone will remember Wendy meeting Cade at the diner, and how Cade left a big tip (i.e. he found new money).

2.  KC Mob v. Cartel - people will be killed, and eventually a sit-down will take place with Marty desperately trying to make peace to save his family.

3.  Ruth's continued involvement in the operation - and potential growing pains as she assumes more responsibility, and makes a mistake or two.

4.  Darlene will probably be more nuisance than actual problem - unless she gets turned by an FBI agent...

5.  Not sure what happens with the kids - assuming Wyatt goes off to Mizzu, Charlotte and Jonah probably blend into the background - maybe one gets kidnapped to step up the stakes for Marty.

Holy crap!  Has anyone else noticed that the symbols in the O at the beginning form shapes of Z A R K everytime?!
Sorry,

Im an idiot and tried seeing this and would stare at all the objects and couldn't figure which was the R and which was the Z.

Can you find a few samples and show me?

Stop with the real names!

I need Ruth,  cartel lawyer chick and redneck gay dude.

Spoliers for the whole season

Enjoyed it. Entertained and I'm not one to nitpick shows that much but this season had a lot of eye rollers.

Random ones i could think of.

I wanna foster this baby that was just taken from a father who was arrested. Sir that takes 2 months....3min later Marty carring baby and a diaper bag.

Im leaving town and i hear those Snells are looking to foster a kid. Sir, that takes 8 weeks, 10 tops....3 min later...her ya go Darlene.

Driving Mr snell...hmmm a stopped car. Bullets flying everywhere. Literally 100 bullets destroy the car while driver just waits. Darlene...DRIVE! Ok..time to go. I guess driver was just waiting for his queue to move as if 100 bullets wasn't one of them.

I really hope Darlene planned that and shot Jacob herself in the car for a flesh wound because if that was a cartel hit attempt ooof. Lawyers client should kill all those guys for botching that one.

I dont mind Marty/Wendy coming up with great ways to get out of things but some are tough to believe that they can happen in hours/days. Specifically the polical stuff, getting laws pushed, fostering children, burning poppy seed fields, digging up and planting ancient snell bones, finding a loop hole to snells property not being his etc...i dont mind the far reaching ways these things occured but how quickly they occur make me roll my eyes a bit.

Glad Buddy died. He was a very convenient character. I was waiting for him to recognize one of the mexicans from that time in 1979 he was at the donkey show in Tijuana and then got Marty out of another jam.

Ruths character can be one dimensional but i think she played her part with a lot of emotion and did very well.

Wendy imo was the breakout star of S2. How she flipped from political PR lady to mother to threatening drug lord was well done. I can understand if others don't like her but I think she is an interesting character.

I liked Wyatt and cared about his character more than I thought i should.

I hated Dads character which is what he was meant to do and he did it well.

I think a big story arc that can end things is a wendy vs marty type of feud.

Marty is ready to leave. Wendy is ready to stay.

They obviously are heading in different directions, will be interesting to see if they keep heading in those directions.

Will Ruth be angry at the Byrds for killing her dad?

What will Wyatt major in?

You forgot Noah, who I liked for the most part.  His relationship with Buddy, opening the bank accounts, helping mom launder money, etc.  He will have a prominent role in season 3 as well.

I haven't read any of the above since I have just finished episode three.  I am not enjoying the new season very much at all.  I think the show has jumped the shark (or in Ozark's case, the Channel Catfish).  Hate the fact that wife was just able to waltz right into power-player's world and immediately set up shop.  Too easy.  I hate that Marty and the old dying dude were able to just zip right into the Union guy's world.  I hate how easily wife solved the suicide issue.  I hated how the detective just immediately took advantage of Blue Cat girl's wreck. Everything is too damn easy and not believable.  I still like Ruth, but she's the only good story line or character.  Hopefully it improves.

They didnt capture thr dread of S1 for me, the constant ticking clock 'it must be fixed today.  TODAY!' for every singled problem got old.  To compound this Marty and Wendy only seem to give lip service or are mildly annoyed they might be murdered.   For a lot of the season they just don't feel like they care,  and its not the character's giving up its just not very intense reactions.

I agree with ithers as well they are all garbage people,  its difficult when youre rooting for all the character's ro get killed.

Although I didn't think it was quite as good as season 1, I enjoyed season 2.

S3: Darlene vs Marty and co. vs KC Mob vs Wilkes and co.

Also wonder if "the client" is actually the lawyer :tinfoilhat:

Sloggin thru, got one S2 ep to go. I been playing Minesweeper to the last half-dozen, just trying to see the season out. Is Laura Linney giving anyone else big lump of HillaryHate in their gullet?

Just finished S2.  The show is still good but not GREAT.  See below...

1.  I didn't notice the thing about the symbols either.  I'll have to go back and take a look.

2.  I agree with guru_007....both Darlene and Jacob (and the driver) should have been killed in the attack on their car.  What a really dumb scene.  No way they make it out of there alive.

3.  The Langmore's annoy me...all of them. Ruth is cute...but all of their voices....horrible.

4.  They didn't give too much detail on the businesses getting shut down and then reopening.  I know it was the FBI shutting them down but they didn't really get into when they reopened or how they reopened.

5.  Is Buddy the dip, duck, dodge...Patches Cullihan (sp) from Dodgeball?

6.  Russ had a decent voice when he was singing the Nirvana song with Wyatt.  He did a good job there.

7. Can you really make cyanide from cherry pits?

8. Are they really putting a casino on that old ### boat?  Seriously?  You're spending millions of dollars on getting this casino going and you buy an old rickety boat?  Dumb.

Good call on 6

That was a nice little nugget

I wanna say they could have bypassed or held onto the KC mob storyline for S3.

Just seemed like it added anither element that made an unbelievable storyline even more unbelievable.

If you were paying attention you would have picked up on the fact that the KC mob was shooting truck driver hands off in order to pressure the state Senator to vote against adding a 14th casino.

I’m really glad I waited to watch the whole season before I read this. You guys could criticize a beej while having tacos and beer.  Or something.

I know

Just seemed like an added storyline to an already packed how we gonna get out of this mess now.

#7 Yes...but I thought it was apple seeds in the show.  Either way, apple seeds and cherry pits contain amygdalin which metabolizes into hydrogen cyanide when ingested.  However, they they need to be crushed or chewed up to access this chemical as it is on the inside of the seed.  A whole pit is more of a choking hazard than a poison hazard.  It would take quite a few seeds/pits to take down a human, but it is a real thing.
