Ozark on Netflix (4 Viewers)

Um, she was 17 when this was filmed...
Go on....

So far, (Ep 6), that and how he got the strip club are the two hardest things to swallow.
SPOILER ALERT: LOOK AWAY IF YOU'RE NOT THRU SEASON ONE

made very little sense how the strip club owner doesn't protest to police that Bateman is the one that took the safe and robbed him of his business title.

But that would end the story right there wouldn't it.

OK maybe I am dumb but how does inflating expenses help him launder money?  He has to have set up a bunch of dummy companies providing the fake goods and services, right?  Wouldn't that have required a ton of work and some degree of legitimacy to provide the right cover for each of those businesses?
No way that strip club made $80k in one weekend. That's 800 dudes @ $100 ea? C'mon now.

Then hillbilly girl agrees to run the joint on his first offer of $1k a week?

Girl brings in $80k in 3 days, knows dude has fat stacks salted away .... and she's content with $1k a week?

Writers should had her counter offer there, $2k a week or 5% of the take or whatever.

3 in and still enjoying it. The blonde girl from The Americans is good in it

I could do without seeing a guy blow another guy though. Does every show have to have some gay storyline?
Yes. Doesn't bother me but seems to be very "IN".

Not sure if it's for shock value? or just appealing to demographics?

But that hillbilly going all in was just dumb.

---------------

I'm still on the first season so I'm not going to read to far into this thread.

I agree about Linney.

But Bateman has been fantastic too- a ton of great work in less obviuos ways... especially how he uses his eyes, tone of voice and set of the jaw, considering his character is so flat and isn't a big-emotion guy.

thought buddy, rusty, the son and wylie were all pretty great too.
Agreed. Bateman and Linney are both doing a magnificent job in their roles, and the supporting cast is mostly really good as well.

Im fairly certain the show is painting the picture of Wendy/Marty being the new versions of Darlene/Jacob. She's evil and he is starting to realize it just like Jacob.

almost Shakespearean that.

nobody commented when i first brought it up, but i still think they're trying to show how a Hillary Clinton is made. substantial & well-motivated woman who knows how the game of power & money is played as well if not better than her husband but defers to him. when the ####storm hits, though, she uses  her talent for making things right to keep her husband's empire afloat and it both excites her and rots her insides, creating quite another human being altogether. i do agree with you, shady, that S3 is gonna be Wendy's and her contest with cartel lawyer (who i believe actually is cartel) will be worthy of a Japanese monster flick. look, i'm already talking myself into watching S3 when i promised i wouldnt...

Season two started badly, but by the end I was satisfied.  It's still worthy of watching, but I doubt it will ever reach the potential it had in the beginning.  I am liking Jonah quite a bit.  He has potential to be a big part of the future.  I guarantee he will be shooting somebody with that rifle at some point.  They made a big fuss over him shooting the deer.

I still like Ruth.  Great character.  I agree with @shadyridr.  Wendy is Darlene.

agree about jonah's potential- had a nice story and character arc this season.

disagree about shooting though. he had been obsessed with death the first season- aims the gun at petty and somebody else? and then finally kills the deer hunting this season. but they also made a big point of showing how much killing that deer messed with him- how much he didn't like it. I would think he goes the other direction and keeps heading into daddy/laundering world.

I also think actress playing Ruth is a great actor. Also, those who saying they hate Charlotte, I think are a bit nuts. Her parents are HORRIBLE parents. I don't blame her for wanting to get the #### outta dodge.

the writing for her got better as it's gone along. from impetuous, annoying teenage girl to girl making a moral stand in a way that made sense, rather than acting as a plot device.

but it still feels a bit cheap, in that how I imagine the reality of the situation being that if any of them break rank, they're all dead (at least in the minds of hte cartel).

There's a much better Charlotte in the Netflix universe - Casey in Atypical

it is funny how shows can make you root for the bad guys like right now i cannot stand charlotte but she is sort of the only half way decent person its like i want to get mad at her for smoking a little grass and being mean to her parents and i totally overlook the fact that her parents are complete slimeballs both from a criminal and moral standpoint that is good writing i think and i appreciate any time a show can get you flipped around like that take that to the bank bromigos

Yeah same here. All I could see was her "disloyalty" and it admittedly elicited some "anger" at her character, when obviously she was right, parents were morally bankrupt, and she had every right to a normal life.

Haven't read the thread to avoid spoilers but having a tough time getting through season 2. Loved the 1st season but this one is a slog so far. Finished the episode where the Feds raided the house at the end. Tell me it gets better from here.
It did get better from there and turned into a pretty solid season. Bateman really is perfect for this role although it's not much different from Michael Bluth. In the middle of everything and just slightly befuddled. Ruth is my favorite character. I thought she was good in The Americans and is even better here.

I guess I wasn't following along close enough but I thought the boat was only part of the casino plan, not the whole thing. What was with the mob, the construction and the Snell's land? Was that all just for a parking lot? It was obvious that the Byrds weren't leaving, wouldn't be much of a show with them in Australia, but it was still a well done finale.

and why did the mob blow up the office? Just sending a message or cutting ties completely? I figured they'd give Marty a chance to keep his word about the unions. Knowing that the Feds are snooping around should make them think twice about drawing more attention with an exploding office.

My favorite line was when Wendy mentioned giving the Snell's the baby and Marty says "I'd give them quadruplets to get this deal done" :D

del Pino: No, not really. The only thing we did was that we shot everything at 4,400 Kelvin temperature, interiors and exteriors, day and night likewise. And because we tried different color temperatures when we were doing tests, we saw that using that setup would give us the most ability to keep that consistent cooler grayish/blueish palette. But no filtration.

This tells me they are using LED's vs. standard HMI/Tungsten lighting. LED's allow for Kelvin adjustment. Standard lighting does not unless you apply gels to warm or cool them. Since there are no camera filters and no gels, it's LED's. As a Set Lighting Technician and Gaffer in Hollywood, I myself can't stand LED lighting. I'm old school. The units are too soft and don't allow for cutting and shaping. Nevertheless, it's my favorite show right now. I binge watched the entire season ... I think I finally went to sleep around 6am last Saturday.
Very interesting stuff about the lighting.  I watched the series to test out my new TV and it did not disappoint.

This series is acted and directed very well.  But the writing is downright lazy.  The scenes involving/showing/mentioning the baby are the best example of what I'm talking about.

Also...

Writers room: "We need to advance the story somehow...I know, let's have the kids do something stupid"
The constant chaos and solutions to it are exhausting, but I think they work better in a binge watching format that having to wait a week between episodes.  There is so little time in this show when the characters are not on edge or in some life threatening situation.

Completely agree here.  Ruth is a great character to watch and very well acted.  I'm not sure where her character is going to go from here.

Other assorted thoughts:

Glad the FBI Agent and Cade are both out of it.  They felt pretty over the top

I think the "turn" of Wendy is pretty interesting and a credit to Linney's acting

Daughter is annoying, but watching the son evolve is pretty cool.  I doubt the daughter will leave, and we will be subjected to stupid plotlines with her regardless

Agree that Snell's should be out of it

I think the cartel boss is the shorter mexicaned guy lurking in a couple of scenes early/mid season.  Lawyer does a great job too.

I’m really glad I waited to watch the whole season before I read this. You guys could criticize a beej while having tacos and beer.  Or something.
:goodposting: it's a tv show. not actual real life.

my wife will watch zombies flying through the air to go back in time where they become animals that cast lightning strikes and say "that's totally possible" but watch Ozark and say "there's no way that you can throw a punch while standing on a rock near the water and not fall over!! this show is so unrealistic!"

Kim Bauer of '24' running-through-the-forest-fighting-cougars level of awfulness (and she's nowhere near hot enough to get away with being a terrible plot device)
Not a fan of her either but I liken her to the daughter on the "Taken" series of bad acting. And no, her character is not growing on me with her portrayal. She's just a bad fit

I just finished Season 2. I liked it a lot.

@SWC  I thought of you during the "Brandy (You're A Fine Girl)" scene.

In episode 9, I thought maybe Jacob was going to kill Darlene when he asked her to go out for a walk around the property, but it ended up the other way around.

You must love Dexter and The Sopranos.

Or wait wait what about the Netflix series Money Heist where they figuratively and literally... take it to the bank?!

can't wait for season 3.  season 2 sucked IMO.  season 1 very good.  I expect 3 to be better.

Seems to me the series has been in a rut of introducing, then killing, characters.  Bateman and the Ruth girl have great acting.  I'll miss Jacob.  The best part of season 2 was watching him get more and more scared of Darlene.  Can't stand Laura Linney.  In anything.

It's not up there with the Crown or Breaking Bad.  It's simply too dark and the plot drags too much.  But it's a 7/10 and good way to kill time in the Wuhan Virus era.

Wow, when is season 4 coming out? I still have episodes 9 and 10 but damn
I knocked out 7 episodes,  it took me a while to remember where I recognized the actor who is playing Wendy’s brother, he was in the series Banshee that was on Cinemax 5 or 6 years ago.

His acting in episodes 8 and 9 was unreal.
