Ozark on Netflix (1 Viewer)

It seems like Marty’s threats are slowly taking care of each other.  I just hope he’s the last man standing as, for me, he’s been less evil than just about anybody outside the kids and probably Ruth.  But as much as I like Ruth, she doesn’t have the brains of Marty and is a hothead like most the rest of them.
He is not evil at all.  He just wants to do his job and keep everyone alive.  And by everyone I mean everyone.  He is always trying to figure out a way to avoid any violence with anybody.  Paying off the hillbillies out of his own money to try and keep the preacher and his wife alive, always trying to solve conflicts in a way that doesn't get anybody hurt.

I think he is a good guy that is good at laundering and he just wants to be left alone to do the job and not get anybody hurt.  He knows there is plenty to go around for everyone (trying to talk the cartel out of going after the hillbillies because they don't really matter to the cartel).  I think the only reason he wants out is because of the violence and risk to his family.  If that risk wasn't there I think he would be fine with continuing to launder and just go about his business.  Very level headed with an eye to solving problems to make everyone happy (without violence).

ETA:  Also why he is so proud of Jonah joining the business and why he had no issues with explaining/teaching Jonah about what he does.  He really enjoys the "business" part and figuring out ways to stay "clean".

Got to avoid spoilers in the thread so will pop in later but a few episodes in and while enjoying it this story line involving the deal with the Shaw drug company is kind of ridiculous.

Kinda think the whole divorce thing is a ruse, maybe the daughter hired him? Somebody with an ulterior motive hired him not named her ex-husband. He's been too much of the story not to have some other motive to stick around.
When he called Maya, he said he was investigating the Byrds. I think someone, maybe their lawyer, hired him to find out what they were involved with. He clearly knows she’s dead. Probably knew her brother was dead.

In the end Maya, Ruth and the PI end up being the heroes. Everyone else ends up dead or in prison. Ruth is one of my favorite characters ever. If she doesn’t win awards for this, there’s something wrong.

Ridiculous plot lines is kind of their thing.  But it’s still a great watch.

You new here?  Welcome to the show. I don't think anyone watching this show is mistaking it for reality.  You can say the same thing about most of the story lines...Snell's, FBI, KC mob...it's all ridiculous.  But it is still an excellent watch.  Great characters, plot twists, suspense...

I was thinking about this the other day - no spoilers for this season - but when you add up the number of deaths surrounding the Byrdes, its an astounding number over such a short period of time.

But, then I think - Marty was laundering money for the cartel for 10 years, with seemingly only 1 death - his predecessor - in that time.

I mean, that really escalated quickly.

The dude that got his rooster shot off and he's hanging out with the boys in the bar drinking beers.   Ruth comes in and says she needs to "talk to him....alone".  One of the buddies makes a comment about how he must've knocked her up.

Does that guy still have the capability to get a girl pregnant?    I thought that was a weird line.   Probably would've been funnier if he said "well, we know she ain't pregnant!"

I feel confident there were deaths, just not as closely tied to Marty.

I was wondering what they were doing with all the cars from the murdered victims. And with today's cell phone pings and GPS locators....these murders would be a lot closer to being solved, imo.

Yeah - a lot of TV shows you have to suspend disbelief but this one is way up there.  The local sheriff wearing his  uniform and driving his police car gets shot to death and incinerating at the local funeral home and all we really hear about it is a missing persons billboard and the temp sheriff making some comments.  And that's just one simple example of many.

Julia Garner has already won 2 Emmys as Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.

Well, for most of those years nobody was stealing money from the cartel so why should they care to kill anybody in Marty's world.  Once Bruce stole money and the cartel got a whiff of it the trust was gone and fear had to be instilled into Marty.

I am not sure if evil is the right word.  Morally compromised sure.  But I don't think Marty wants anybody to die.  That would be evil.  He actually puts himself in harms way to try to prevent people from  getting killed .  He would be happy if people just did what they were supposed to do (with respect to laundering and not pissing off the cartel) so nobody gets hurt.

I get your point but it's kind of naive to think working for and supporting a drug cartel isn't really hurting individuals.  Call it evil, bad, morally compromised, whatever - he has to own it.  But, as I already said he's one of the least "evil" characters.

He clearly knows she’s dead. Probably knew her brother was dead.

The number of people that actually "knew" those details was pretty small.

Its possible Helen left something for him "if she does not return" - but the people who know she is dead are the Byrdes, and the cartel.

I was drawn to the series because Bateman has been under rated as an actor and I've always felt that Laura Linney was fantastic.  Then I saw Bateman get directing credit and that pushed my expectations over the top.

Then the pleasant surprise of Julia Garner as an amazing actor.

Add in the writing and WOW.  Great series.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the show, but typically you need to care about at least one of the main characters.  In Ozark, I hope they all die in a fire.  Nary a one worth rooting for.

Wyatt is a decent character. Not innocent, not in that environment,  but decent at his core.

He reminds me of Bobby Baccala.

Marty hired the PI. That's the twist. The purpose is to create a working cover story all around to get the confidence and trust of Maya the FBI accountant.

And the car accident is the Byrde family faking their own deaths. That's the only way out.

The FBI agent Maya made it clear that Marty is so talented, that the Bureau wants him as a private contractor. But with the condition of being a slave to them under threat of putting his entire family in prison. So that's not an escape. And clearly Navarro was being hones to this nephew when he said when he was free and clear, he could do what he wanted with the Byrdes.

Siphon a ton of money, engineer the deaths of the main Navarro Cartel, implicate the FBI power players shown in a scandal and escape.

One of the major themes of the show is you can't escape the limits of your social class and your place in the hierarchy. Everyone who has tried to buck that reality has failed and most have died. This means Ruth goes to prison by the end.

One of the burning questions I hope they answer before the finale is how the Langmores keep their outside couch so dry and not covered in dirt, leaves, bird/animal poo, etc.

I'm only through Ep 4 of Season 4 Part 1, so no one spoil it if they got to it already this season. TIA.

Good question.

Also, judging by the rasp of Darlene's voice, she must plow through three packs of Pall-Mall's a day, yet there is not an ashtray or butt in sight.

I don't know how you can't root for Marty and Ruth.

Marty finds out his business partner is in bed with drug dealers just as he finds out his wife is having an affair. And to simply stay alive, he has to forget the affair...and continue to live with said harpie.

Ruth, if raised somewhere other than the Ozark ghetto, is smart and clever enough to be whatever she wants to be. But because she WAS born there, she feels an obligation to take care of her dumb relatives while scratching and clawing for everything she gets.

I think they're easy characters to root for.

I know we're all waiting for Wendy to get hers though.

As far as Ruth goes, why does she choose to still live in the same dumpy spot? Where does her money go? It seems like she would have been able to pack away some decent scratch. It appears she hasn't spent more than $8 in three and a half seasons. Similarly, for Ruth in particular, why not just take off and go somewhere else. She was the one character closest to having full freedom in the whole show. I get she has family to worry about, but at least move to a neighborhood that isn't so wrong side of the tracks.

As far as the Byrdes go, provided they didn't run off with a truck load of the cartel's money, why not just drop everything and up and leave town? Marty has done everything they wanted of him (if not more), and there is both a stream of incoming revenue, businesses set up, and laundered money to keep everyone happy. Sure, someone could track them down at some point wherever they go and shoot them, but how is that different than worrying about that every hour of every day now?

That's the contradiction of this line of "work". You make a bunch of money, but can't use any of it because it'll draw attention to yourself - and the game would be over.

Because Navarro has dangled "freedom" in front of them and they are clinging to it.

I'm guessing you haven't finished Season 4, part 1?

I meant freedom as an overarching theme / concept across the whole show. I am completely caught up through S4 Part 1. I get that they are getting promised their freedom, but even if they did everything they were asked to do (no matter how difficult), there's a huge chance that they still wouldn't be done working for the cartel. There would always be one more thing. Or one more request to get the government to agree to. Or one more big shipment as the last one. Or one more person in the cartel that needs something. Or someone in the cartel that is not on board and then takes over as their owner and pulling them on a leash. The cycle does not seem to ever end (at least not through three and a half seasons).

I think that's the point. When you're doing everything to keep your nose barely above water, you're not thinking about swimming to safety.

Plus, I think Wendy is like Walter White - she likes it. She's good at it.

I think, if escaping isn't the goal, she's got a beautiful location. With her legitimate salary during her time at the casino she could have justified sprucing up the homestead a little. Maybe go with a double wide and new couch for the yard.

I don't see how that creates anything for him.  I don't doubt that he could have done it for a twist but I don't see the reasoning on how it benefits him.  How would that gain him trust from the FBI accountant?

Lol, intentionally driving off the highway and flipping your van 20 times is quite the bold way to FAKE the death of you and your family.
It could be that they didn't plan the accident but once it happens maybe they take advantage of the situation and fake their deaths because of it.

I also think Marty likes laundering money as well.  It's a game with him to stay ahead of everyone (like the FBI) and he enjoys the challenge.....and he is very good at it.  Having the FBI at the casino trying to take him down is something he thoroughly enjoys as it he gets to flaunt how good he is in that everyone knows what he is doing but nobody can prove it.

I'm only on episode 3 season 4, but didn't she buy that motel with her money?
She took out a business loan.  Not sure how much of her own money she used but for laundering purposes she probably needs a mortgage of some sort on there as well.

Best season yet so far (sad it is coming to an end but it feels perfect to end it this season).

Awaiting season 4 part II with baited breath.

If you run, if you are caught, the Cartel will kill everyone, including the children.

If you stay, and you upset the Cartel, they'll just kill Marty and Wendy.

The former indicates that the children are informed of everything, hence to justify being on the run. The latter does not.

Hence the insulation regarding Helen and her own family. They didn't know and that was meant to protect them.

The Cartel clearly has pull with American law enforcement at the local level where they operate. That only exists if they operate quietly and they don't go around killing children at will. People disappearing is another matter. Explaining missing adults is one thing, explaining away missing kids who should be in high school is another.

The PI is meant to gain the FBI accountant's trust. If he establishes his own motive for finding out the truth and if he ingratiates himself to her, then she is more likely to believe the Byrdes are dead when he says they are dead or believe him when he fabricates something.

Marty is very logical. If that was a real PI on his own and just kept barging into their house, he'd have the guy killed.

The FBI accountant is also logical and calculating. She expects Marty to make the safe calculated move. This is the time not to make the safe calculated move. This is how you overcome her threat to his family.

The issue with the Senator and his son and the rigged vote counting machines is also another leverage point. Wendy has ammo to use that somewhere at someone.

What do we think of the seed seller Ruth visits, her mom’s friend? I hate to think they’d borrow from Breaking Bad, but could she possibly looking to poison someone?

Also, as many times as it’s been mentioned, the signature requested by the PI for the “divorce papers” probably means something.

Pretty sure the seeds were meant as a wedding present to Wyatt & Darlene, as there was a brief scene where Ruth wrote something to the effect of "use these to lay down roots" or something near the end of Ep. 7.  She was driving to their house with that brown box on the truck seat, I think we're meant to think that was the gift with the seeds inside.

I can get on board with Marty having hired the PI. Would also explain why the PI is at the same motel as Jonah, as Marty can tell him to keep an eye on his son as well.

Oh thanks. I missed that, and didn’t really understand how that interaction was relevant otherwise

I like your PI scenario. My memory sucks but would like to know if any screen time had Marty and the PI talking with nobody else around. That would certainly make that scenario not likely but if not it’s defiantly in play.

Kinda interesting that Omar puts up with Javi messing with the Byrds. He's the boss. You would think he could put his nephew in check.

Also, do you think Omar has other "Byrds" in other locations doing the same thing? He seems to spend a lot of time and energy on them.
