Panthers agreed to terms with TE Jeremy Shockey (1 Viewer)

Panthers agreed to terms with TE Jeremy Shockey on a two-year contract.Shockey is choosing Carolina over Miami. Coach Ron Rivera made it clear in January that he would target a "do-it-all" tight end after he and new coordinator Rob Chudzinski watched Antonio Gates every day in practice. Chud has a history of utilizing tight ends heavily, and he coached Shockey at Miami University a decade ago. Shockey will play starter's snaps, but he's not going to be a recommended fantasy pick. He's lost more than a step after the catch, and the Panthers have major QB issues.

Car needs a QB, obviously, but if they get any kind of play there, this might not be a total FF wasteland for Shockey. Seems like a big IF though right now.

He was a FF wasteland with Drew freaking Brees.
Haha, good point. I guess the other big IF is his health. That has been the biggest thing holding him back.
Carolina doesnt have all the options Brees had in NO. After the run game and steve smith, who is there? If healthy he looks to be the #2 passing target wouldnt you think? With health and decent QB play, he couldnt be worse then he was in NO.

And yet all those options still had value. Shockey is done. He has zero value

Yeah, being the #2 option in the passing game could help Shockey have some relevance... I was sort of thinking the same thing. However, he'd be the #2 option in a much less prolific O and then there are the couple other issues already addressed. I don't think he is 100% dead as far as FF goes... he may well have one foot in the grave though.

a TE is a new QB's best friend. shockey has been in the league like 9 years and there is wear on the tires. he's not one of the new style TEs in the league that can stretch the field or bust a big play but he can catch and block. he could get plenty of targets in this offense if he starts. he will likely outperform his draft position.

Shockey is usually good for a handful of catches a game and in Carolina I believe he'll get more goal line looks than in NO, since he's one of three weapons there vs. one of six/seven in NO. Shockey's biggest downfall is that he gets ZERO YAC. He's big and has great hands and will pull down anything you throw, but he's going to the ground as soon as the ball hits his hands. It worked for the Saints because they'd just have him park his big frame across the FD line and hit him every time. He's definitely regressed but he'll still be a fantasy option to consider

Didn't really help Todd Heap a few years ago when the Ravens brought in Flacco. and Todd was(and always has been)a better receiving TE

The backs are pretty similar in quality to the Ravens trio, so I think your point is a good one but Flacco is a much stronger QB than Clausen and IIRC, stronger than any QB they'd get this year.

Perhaps the reason I am more optimistic than you: "In Carolina, Shockey will be reunited with Panthers offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski, who was his tight ends coach at the University of Miami."
