Panthers fire Marty Hurney. (1 Viewer)

They should fire the coaching staff first.i dont own dwill, or any panthers for that matter, but 2 carries for dwill is crazy.
That would have made more sense...but I have to think there is some reason for the move happening now. That reason could be as simple as just making a statement though, so who knows.

Because it is straight reactionary to Cam Newton acting like a baby after the game yesterday.
No its not. The losingest team in NFL since 09. 6 games out in the division after the bye. Considering how the talent is utilized vs how they are paid, there is a clear disconnect with GM and staff. If you are ready to move on, the sooner the better. If you think this firing has anything to do with Cam you aren't following the Panthers closely.

Yeah, one comment from Cam Newton is clearly the reason that Hurney was fired. Anyone trying to pin this on him is just someone who is digging to find something else to make Cam look bad. There are a few posters on this board that I've lost a ton of respect for based on their insistence of putting everything bad in Carolina onto Cam.

3 winning seasons in 11 years, and a 1-6 start this season has nothing to do with it. Not to mention his fantastic history of drafting, free agent signings, and traded draft picks to get players like Armanti Edwards and Everette Brown.

If Richardson made this move to pacify anyone, it's the Carolina fanbase, not Newton. The fanbase has been calling for his head for years now, and after a 1-5 start, this is a way to make a statement to the fanbase. It's an easy move for Richardson, because Hurney was working without a contract (so no legal/contract issues to deal with) and was almost definitely gone after the season anyway.

Rivera and his staff are next, but Hurney is the creator of the entire team/staff, so this was a big statement by Richardson that the Carolina Panthers are going in a new direction.

Sorry...I don't buy the "pacifying the fanbase" nonsense. He didn't give two ####s about the fanbase during the lockout.

I saw that richardson/ jerry jones interview thing.

As a cowboys fan let me warn Panthers fans to keep your owner as far away from Jerry as possible. Jerry is not a good influence.

Even though Cam was a good pick, you do not want your owner thinking he can and should decide on players.

The problem with this organization is a 3-4 year streak of terrible drafting and salary cap management
This is accurate. Look at Hurney's record of draft picks. He can nail a first round pick - always been good at that. But rounds 2-5 are a complete coin flip with Hurney, and more often than not came up empty for the Panthers. I've followed this team since it's inception, and was at the age where I was just starting to get excited about the NFL when the Panthers came into existence. Hurney has been a problem for YEARS.

As to Cowher, I'd be shocked if Richardson hired him as a coach/GM. The last time the organization brought in a GM/Coach in the same position, it ended very, VERY poorly (Seifert). Richardson seems to like the separation of Church and State.

As to predictions, I'd honestly be surprised if a big name was brought in. That's not Richardson's MO. He's got friends all over the league in front offices and owners boxes, and will thoroughly vet any new candidates. I would expect calls to Foxboro, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, etc. for recommendations. And I would think the new GM is someone we've barely heard of, if ever.

As to Rivera, I wasn't 100% on board with that hire in the first place, though I liked the ACs he brought in. The problem with the situation, however, is Rivera's complete lack of ability to reign in the assistants and ensure they follow the overall gameplan. Fox wasn't a great "coach" in the traditional sense, but he was amazing when it came to captaining the ship, determining the direction of the team, acting as a sort of CEO, and delegating to his assistants to execute that gameplan. He was overly conservative, which eventually became a problem. But he ensured the assistants followed the blueprint - Rivera hasn't done that AT ALL.

Barnwell over at Grantland nailed the problems with Hurney a few months ago... I'd encourage any skeptics of the move to read it.

As a franchise-long fan, I've been waiting for this day for a very long time... I'm on cloud 9.

The sad truth about this move is that more changes (and more rebuilding) are coming in the near future. As a fan, it is highly frustrating to watch your team go through this year after year. Hurney's personnel moves have been puzzling to say the least over the past few seasons; I wonder if he got a little bit too comfortable.

I hope we bring in a GM who is ruthless and not loyal to players - a Jerry Reese type. You can't be afraid to let veterans go. We need someone fresh overlooking talent evaluation. There are pieces to build around; it's just a matter of using them the right way.

While I agree with the bolded, I was never confident in Hurney to get the job done in the first place. Following the 2-14 season, Richardson should have cleaned house. They specifically let bad money expire on their books in the uncapped year so they would have a fresh start moving forward. They entered last year with tons of $$ to spend, the #1 overall pick, etc. Hurney should have been let go with Fox, but instead was allowed to stay on. He then signed horrible contracts with DW, Charles Johnson, Olindo Mare, etc. He routinely wasted draft picks, took the wrong players, failed to address very real roster needs, etc.

At least with this move today, I'm more confident about the rebuild moving forward. This team NEVER posted back-to-back winning seasons during Marty Hurney's tenure. He needed to go to move forward. It's a year and a half too late, but it needed to be done regardless.

odd time to fire the GM.
It's a perfect time. Rivera and his staff will be gone at the end of the season (or maybe earlier in Rivera's case). This gives the Panthers a chance to hire a new GM and let him start scouting coaches to determine who will be on the list to interview/target. I wouldn't be shocked to see Rivera gone by the end of the day (I kind of doubt it happens, but it wouldn't surprise me). When Jerry Richardson decides to make a move, he's all in.
Seems like a bit of a short leash after taking over a 2-14 team. Less than a year and a half?
It seems that way, but the coaching this season is the worst I've ever seen from an NFL team (at least one that I follow closely), and I have witnessed a 1-15 and 2-14 Panthers season. The play calling is atrocious and they seem unable/unwilling to do anything to fix it. Rivera also is terrible at game management and frequently makes dumb mistakes in time management, etc.

He may make it to the end of the season, but unless this team goes on a big run of wins, there is a 0% chance he's the coach next season...and he shouldn't be.
You should watch more Cowboys games.
I did yesterday. The Cowboys staff completely outcoached Carolina.
Did they play twice? The Cowboy team I saw barely got out with a win.

The Cowboys suck, Carolina sucks more. If Carolina would have spent the bye week re-evaluating the idiotic run option scheme, they would have easily won the game. Just because the game was close doesn't mean that Carolina wasn't outcoached I'll admit though, the Panthers coaching staff did less wrong yesterday than they have in most games this year (even though they were still horrible). I seem to recall Chudzinski doing a great job in Cleveland, turning the offense around, only to have it all completely fall apart as a result of getting overcomplicated the following year. It seems he's repeating the same thing in Carolina. Rivera is guilty by association, and by refusing to see the problems on offense and forcing a change.

The Cowboys are supposed to be a contender, they should be pounding on Carolina, no offense.

Yeah what I saw was two teams that both had problems. The Cowboys had slightly less of them. Not sure I would give them much credit.

I actually agree. None the less, the Cowboys were a game from the playoffs last year and the panthers were 6-10 last year and only had one win coming in this year. The Cowboys should win those games easily.

The headscratching part is the guy doesn't even drink or use profanity, had a full NCAA investigation that came out clean, and by all reports puts in my hours than any other Panther.

You don't know Richardson then. The fan base is always at the top of his priority list, almost to a fault. The lockout was a situation where he was playing hardball and the fans were screwed over as a side effect of the situation. Outside of that small period of time, he's been all about the fan base.
I've watched him from day one and the lockout was the first time he had to choose between the fans and something else  He chose the something else.

True, but Hurney presided over the majority of the team's existence.Team started play in 1995, meaning this is it's 18th season. Hurney presided over 10.5 of those seasons... he wasn't without blame.I think the whole staff is gone, and frankly, depending on the new GM, wouldn't be shocked to see Newton traded if the offer was right (it'd have to be a HUGE offer, but I wouldn't be shocked). I agree with the earlier sentiment that the Panthers need a ruthless GM without blind loyalty to players. Team first, individual second - just like Pittsburgh, Baltimore, NY Giants, etc.
