The Panthers have no touchdowns and six field goals.

Does Fox react at all? If so how?

Well, it is preseason, so no, you go into the season with your game plan. If things still don't work out, then you start tweaking the offense.

The Panthers will be just fine. I'm actually impressed with the way Fox has them playing so far. The've had without a doubt the toughest preseason schedule. Ravens, Jets, Tenn, Steelers. Those are some pretty tough defenses. They have one of the easier schedules in the league this year IMO. With Stewie and Smittee coming back for week one and with DWill, I think you could see the Panthers take care of business and get a win week one. Anybody remember how many TDs the Panthers had the last time they played the Giants? Something to the tune of:

Panthers - 41

Giants - 9

Offense will be fine come week one.

Fox won't react at all, and that's ok. Getting Steve Smith, Jonathan Stewart, Jeff Otah back will be huge.
No doubt their return will help.Smith didn't have 1000 yards last year for the first time in a while and is getting older. I don't think it's a guarantee he's as excitingly productive as we've come to love about the guy. He also had two one catch games and missed another last year. Panthers have considered Smith the cure-all for too long IMO and it's bound to bite them. Do you think they saw this coming in drafting 3 QBs?(although one is WR)

Fox's reaction, "It is what it is."Jerry's (owner) reaction, pats self on back for successful season. Jerry is playing to win the lockout. The seats are basically sold for this year and he won't even have to pay a coach next year.

One local beat writer - I forget which one, said he stopped counting once the offensive possessions reached 50 without an offensive TD. For what it's worth, they did not score during the family fun event open practice during training camp. Oof. On a brighter note, John Fox is ultra-conservative in the PS, often using a very vanilla approach so as not to give away any secrets. Another reason for at least some optimism is the lack of Smitty and Jonathan Stewart in any of the games. Smith is a big time fixture in the offense and Matt Moore has leaned his way heavily in the time they have spent on the field in games prior.

Interestingly enough, their defense, especially their first team defense, has been nothing short of outstanding. 19 sacks in four games - three really, because the 4th game was all but a scrimmage with very little participation from starters on both sides of the ball.

Defensive stats to take note of

#1 in sacks with 19

#1 in total yards allowed per game - 206.8

#1 in 3.4 yards per play allowed. Next closest is 4.2 YPP.

#1 in first downs allowed per game with 12.2. The almighty Jets were 2nd with 13.0

Tied for #1 in 3rd down pct allowed - 25%

#1 in passing yards allowed - 114.2

I don't think Fox says Smith is the cure all....but the combo of Williams, Stewart, Smith a good offensive line and a Defense that looked amazing this preseason is THE cure all!

Hi Jeff,Not doubting you but this has to be the biggest "old wives tales" that coaches actually do. Fox has been in the league a long time, been the HC of Carolina for many seasons...does he really think no one will know what he has planned for the 16 game regular season? I see this written a lot and I just find it hard to grasp. There were coaches blitzing and scheming during the preseason and I think that's a good thing. You can't just turn it on when the regular season starts.

Personally, I think they will be OK. I'm not worried too much about Matt Moore, the running game or the receiving game. Smith is going to make a giant impact when he returns week one against the Giants.

Both of those games were with Delhomme where he threw a whopping 195yds and 6 INT's COMBINED. Things will be much better with Moore - the last 4 games of 2009 Smitty had 378yds and 3 TDs. He will be a steal in drafts this year in the 4th round where most ADP lists have him.

It'll be interesting to see.Smith under a K last year, Moore stinkin' in preseason...I don't see it. You do, that's cool.

Might be an interesting bump in a few months

weird post since 3 of the 5 were present in preseason

Have we really seen enough from Matt Moore for him to get such a pass from everyone? He looked a lot better than Delhomme, for sure, but I am not seeing much discussion of how HE plays.

any thoughts now? Not being wise it's just...well Moore didn't look good regardless of getting injured

Bump

So is there anything the Panthers can do?

I see a Smith trade thread-he's got 3 catches for 22 yards and 2 for 11 yards the last two weeks.

told ya- Re Smith. This thread and others.

Seems to me like their inability to strike any fear in defenses with their passing game (Smith's decline and QBs ineffective play) has hurt the run game and their whole team in general. Long drives with lots of runs sure helps a D stay fresh.
