There's no defense of these people. They do nothing but create misery and slow progress to feed their own greed.

The only defense that mitigates the risk of patent troll litigation is having no money or assets. You can't rob somebody that's already broke.
I've been educated on how many things we were told about Hitler were actually lies. So now I think patent trolls are probably worse. But I guess a case could be made. Let's limit it to post-1970, and I think patent trolls come out on top.
There are plenty of ways to defend against them. They just normally set their price point well below the costs of those defenses.
Hitler invented patent trolling. It drove former Patent Office employee Albert Einstein so mad that he fled Germany. Those are the facts.

Nobody said that anyone who brings a patent suit is a troll. Surely you can see how your example is different than the others posted. These companies don't invent or produce anything nor provide any service. Their business is patent trolling.
However, almost any article ever written about "my" company refers to them as a patent troll. They are known as the quintessential patent troll.
We may need to know who you're talking about here. Some people consider Apple a patent troll, and while they are purchasing patents, they actually DO develop new and useful technology. Then there is Project Paperless, which patented existing technology and is shaking down end users. The real patent trolling. Then there is Intellectual Ventures and the like.
Not going to say because every article written in the press contained lies and errors, and I don't want to defend and refute. The fact is that their opponent has a huge PR group and we didn't have the resources to fight this in the press. We put all of our effort into the case.

They tried to produce a product, but never had commercial success because their patented technology had been stolen by a Fortune 25 company and implemented into the bigger company's competing product.

Stolen. While it was being patented, the larger company used the details of the public patent filings to implement the technology into its own product. The patent process is supposed to protect the inventor, but sadly, this is far from the case.
If that were the case, they wouldn't receive a patent. Don't try to bully me into divulging more details. I will tell what I can--there's ongoing litigation. I never said the lack of a PR firm was preventing me from giving more info.
If I were you, I'd ignore the letter. Patent litigation is exceptionally expensive to pursue and a threatening letter doesn't mean much.
I still don't understand how this works. You can't extort an end user for patent infringement.

"use" is a form of infringement, as are sale/sell, offer to sell, and, in some cases, import.
