Path of Exile (free to play & now on Xbone) (1 Viewer)

Is the game we are playing now likely going to be what is officially released or will more content be added before release?I know the 3rd act was just released recently.
This is going to sound crazy, but I read somewhere (POE Forums maybe?) that they plan for way more acts. Ten, even. Which seems insane, but I'm not sure that this game is anywhere close to release. Could be wrong.
What will be different when they finally release POE? Will our current characters be deleted? I think this is the most fun I have ever had playing a game either online or a computer. Yeah I said it.
No there will be no character wipes, the game is effectively released. That being said, its also effectively still in beta, we are all play testing the game and helping them further develop for it, they are making skill changes constantly, there will be skill additions and changes throughout development, the passive tree will be changed. In cases of serious passive tree changes, they will give everyone a full respec for free.

While it is nice that they move your character from hc to sc when you die, it would be even nicer if they gave you a free reset since having anywhere from 1/2 to 1/3 the dps of everyone else in sc just gimps the character.1 lag spike and you die in hc, no idea why I even bothered

Yeah, I think hc is something you kinda have to wait for. Still lots of kinks being worked out. Too risky for the time investment.

what is the difference between the hc league and the three different difficulty levels (normal, cruel, merciless?). Is the hc league really meant that you never die even once with a character? That seems incredible to me. Is the idea to move to that hardcore league after you have maxed out a character?

Softcore (SC), die as many times as you want - people typically make glass cannonsHardcore (HC), die only once and then get moved to SoftcoreTwo totaly separate "realms"/"leagues" - players from SC cannot group with players from HC. They both have the same acts and levels.HC is a fun way to play, because every time you get low on life you are like "oh ####" and the adrenaline starts pumping and is quite the let down when you die. Here's an example of a Hardcore build I was going for:My linkYou'll notice the 21 life nodes hit. This is the problem when they move you to SC, sure you are a beefy as hell tank but the people around you kill stuff so dang fast "your tankiness" is not really needed.

Hmm. I must be playing in a completely different way. There are no other people around when I play in the mode I am in (which I assume is normal/sc). The only time I ever see any other players is in the town. But other than that I am playing solo.

Look at the Social tab (S I think) from there you can create a group and people can join you or you can join other people on the same quest as you - grouping is fun except a lot of players will ninja loot so you need to be aware of that.

Ahh cool. I have seen the Notice Boards in town that look like you can sign up for group quests but I have not tried that yet. Is there in-game voice chat?If you die in the HC mode, but want to try again in HC, do you have to recreate a brand new character?

Just a heads up for those of you with middle of the road or low end graphics cards, you may want to make a conscience decision to not use certain skills.I'm using a Radeon HD 5770 atm, its a performance budget card, middle of the road by todays standards and anytime I'm in a party with someone using poison arrow I get a significant increase on the load on my gpu. Back in closed beta when I ran a ranger I even fatal error'd because of it. Just gotta be aware of it. There are other skills that are very GPU intensive, I don't know them all but Poison Arrow has always been the biggest culprit, which is a shame because its ridiculously good.
I just experienced this today. I did not get any data crash but everything significantly slowed down after poison arrow was used and then recovered once the visual effect was complete.

When I look at my character screen and it shows me DPS, is that just for the default mode of the weapon (in this case a bow)? If so, how do I determine the DPS of the skills that relate to my bow (like poison arrow that was mentioned above)?

dps covers everything from what I read, as to your other question, yes when you die in HC, you need to reroll from level 1.

A few questions:1) Are the blue items (blue text) considered magic items, and yellow items ultra-rare/unique? Are there other items of different colors that are even more rare?2) Is there a benefit in holding off using orbs in later levels to get more bang for your buck in terms of upgrading items?3) I'm a little disappointed in the gem drops, in terms of frequency and the abilities they provide. Does this improve in later levels?

I guess I don't understand the stat. Shouldn't the default attack have a different DPS than when a skill is used?

I think he meant that you can actually see the skill's DPS as well, when you hover over it on your hot key bar at the bottom of the screen. I think. I'm not in front of my computer right now.

When you open the Character screen © you get an intimidating menu of stats, its actually quite intuitive. There are tabs, an Offense Tab, a Defense Tab and two others (charges I believe?)The offense tab is the one stop shop for all offensive information you need, above all the numbers there will be boxes, these boxes are all of your offensive information as it applies to ONE SKILL, by default it is on a normal attack, but if you click on the box representing a equipped skill (will have the same image as the one on your hotbar) it will display the offense information for that skill. The defensive tab is where you get all your defensive information, life, armor, evasion, energy shield, life and mana regen, resistances, move speed and so on.

1) Blue items are magic, they are simply uncommon drops. Yellow items are rare, and are even less common. And, then you have Unique items, which are a burnt orange/brown color and aren't incredibly rare but they are definitely not easy to find.2) Yes, its precisely that as well. I still use orbs every now and then to speed up my progression, the faster you get to end game, the faster you can farm gear.3) Gem drops maintain their drop rate pretty constant, but your ability to kill and the speed at which you do it changes, so as you level up you will be able to farm much more efficiently and the drops will come much faster.

Thanks to you and every one else for so much good info in this thread for us newbies. It helps cut down on the learning curve tremendously.I have a question about the bolded in number 2.

If you are already at end game, what is the benefit of farming? Is that to make your character better for PVP type battles?

And as a related question, how does PVP work in this game?

Thanks! I now see every thing. I was not looking at the boxes in the Character screen to get the skill specific information.

I don't mind, I stumbled through this game while still in closed beta by myself, probably 20 hours before I got the hang of things. On pvp, I played before pvp was added, and since its been added have not participated in it at all, I enjoyed pvp in Diablo 2 but it was far from what kept me playing the game. From what I gathered pvp is very straight forward in this game. There is very little if any balancing, so it really is whoever has the better gear and build that should win every time.

As far as myself personally when it comes to end game, I love the map system. Heres a link to when they announced them: Maps and Endgame.

Since diablo 2 I've enjoyed hack and slash RPGs for mostly one reason, making new builds leveling them and seeing how effective they are. It sounds boring to some people, but I love the progression and loot explosions. Back in the Diablo 2 days, when you only had 8 character slots, I would make a new character literally every week and just try some completely ridiculous build based on a skill no one ever used or a unique piece of gear. I enjoy manipulating and exploiting the skill system and passive tree, I love gearing characters.

So farming for me is a means to an end, provides me with resources to make new characters, obviously not everyones cup of tea, but its my motivations.

Ok I think I get it. End game allows you to farm faster for better drops

The drops can then be saved in the game's permanent stash so that you can use them when building your next character.

I farm at the LEDGE in Act one and FELLSHRINE in Act two at every difficulty simply because they have lots of easy mobs and the drops are pretty good. Now why do I do it? So that I can farm more easily in the future :)

I keep crashing. I think it is my current laptop. I have heard it can be caused due to the sound card? I dunno my graphics are getting crushed? Those people were killing everything in sight, and by the time I starting fighting the group was gone. I must get a better laptop to play this game. I feel as if I am missing out on way too much.

Yeah, I'm not sure the official hardware requirements have been made public, the game is very capable of melting GPUs, especially in groups.I'm running around solo with my elemental bow shadow and I have to take breaks every hour cause my GPU is burning up.

Yup, they were saying get your dumb ### in here and quit walking around looking like a ####### #######! 10 seconds later VLAAD tells everyone he is going to kick me from the group. BAM I am gone teleported.Where were the CPU reguirements? Looking for a new laptop anyway.

the only cpu guideline I saw was that it must support sse2, which I imagine is any processor you'd buy.I'd pay more attention to the gpu.how much do you plan on spending for this free game.....?

I am looking for a new laptop. So I thought I would try and get the most bang for the buck.

PvP will start the nerfing of every class and skill in the game just like ever other game with PvP.

Some news, near and medium future:The next major patch is 0.10.1, which may include big changes such as the following ones we're testing internally: Different icons for each gem so that they can be distinguished easily. Many new end-game Map areas so that the ones that currently share layouts become distinct and interesting. An overhaul of a lot of the sound in game to support pitch/volume variation (which makes it sound a lot better).==================And for the rest of this yearOur plan for 2013 includes many big updates such as large PvP improvements, additional Act 3 areas and content you saw in the Open Beta Trailer but haven't yet encountered in the game. This year we have a schedule to develop and deploy dozens more skills, hundreds of new Unique items and many new league modes.

So I am a level 18 ranger, on act 2. I have all of these orbs. Should I be using them, or hoarding them? I generally have all yellows:chromatictransmutationalchemychancealterationaugmentationI have used a couple here and there, but fear I should just be hoarding them.

This thread has pretty useful info on crafting in general.

Started playing this... Rolled a witch - seems to do ok so far. Got the make zombie thing - seems pretty handy for soloing to constantly have these expendable tanks occupying the beasties while I blast em.

Well, I finally got my first unique item shortly after entering Act II:

Facebreaker Strapped Mitts

Interesting item, in that its biggest payoff is if you stay unarmed. As it stands with my best weapon now, I get about 5-10 pts more per hit unarmed than armed. What's the play here to try to maximize its effectiveness? I've already invested a lot in the Sweep gem in a staff so that's how I've been rolling for the past few days.

869% more unarmed physical damage :) . That's awesome. Is unarmed damage based on your strength ?

I guess, and maybe other multipliers (if there are any?) The physical damage bonuses on rings should help.

Got these as well and tried them out on my level 59 marauder and it did not go too well. I used infernal blow (explodes the targets) in conjunction with leech life, faster attacks, life on hit, and melee damage support gems and I just could not hit enough targets quickly enough to stay alive.

Ranger so far as been pretty easy. I have died a couple of times when I got careless, but that is only when I got bum rushed by crap loads of mobs. Most times, even groups of 10+ are no big deal. Poison arrow + lightning arrow used in conjunction is :moneybag:

It way too much like Diablo 2 (which was a horrible failure). I tried it over the weekend, I spent more time downloading it than playing it.No thanks

Lol what?Pretty sure Diablo 2 held the record for 10 years for most copies sold, until it was broken by Diablo 3 which was a horrible failure - but D2, D2 was not.

Please remind me never to listen to AR's video game reviews.
I meant Diablo 3.

Well in that case, I politely disagree. Though they are both ARPGs, so they will share a lot of commonalities - they are in fact miles apart in virtually every other respect than their most basic of core mechanics. Probably my favorite thing in PoE outside of the skill and passive systems (which are both completely unlike D3) is the currency system (also unlike D3).

By the way that the currency is set up inflation will be almost non-existent, all currencies have a use and are used - frequently ensuring they don't just pile up somewhere.

Just got my Death's Harp Bow on my Elemental Bow shadow, its amazing until there is a single guy left approximately mid-screen in distance from you, the arrows split just perfectly that they entirely miss the mob...

Death's Harp, its slow but its a beauty

My current ranger/bow build plan My link
I am currently building a similar character.I have a question about Iron Reflexes. By choosing that, does that mean that the armor rating is a better choice overall for characters in general over evasion? I am early in my ranger character so I am unsure if I should be building up my armor or my evasion when given a choice.
Armor is widely regarded as the best defensive stat, evasion can be almost as good as armor but the amount of passive nodes and gear decisions required limit you in other ways. To even compete with armor you pretty much have to get the Acrobatics Keystone as well as use a shield and pump as much in to life as possible to survive in case all your rolls fail. Essentially you exploit having a chance to evade, a chance to dodge (acrobatics gives a 20% to dodge, which is seperate from evade), and a chance to block and its still barely even close. That being said, if you use Iron Reflexes then all of your +% evasion nodes will apply to your evasion before being converted to armor and then the +% armor nodes will also apply.
As a general rule, then Iron Reflexes >>> Acrobatics?Acrobatics: +20% Dodge. Removes ALL Armor and Energy Shield.Iron reflexes: Converts all Evasion rating to Armour.

I have my ranger to 23. Just got iron reflexes, so we will see how it goes. Just got a chest piece with tons of evasion. Other than that, pretty much all bow dmg and crit so far.
