Can someone explain when reflect comes into play? I am in act2 of merciless now. I am unsure what enemies do this reflect thing you guys keep referring to.
It comes off yellow bosses. You can tell because they will look like there are spikes going out around them, and their minions will have it too. White spikes mean Melee reflect, which can be deadly to Melee characters.
ahh, I probably don't notice this as much because I am a ranger. Even with point blank I still rarely stand toe to toe with anyone.
Yeah, just another reason Ranged>Melee in this game. They're trying to fix it, but there's still a significant imbalance.

Supposed to be addressing it in the next few patches, they were talking about non-skill changes, something fundamental but they haven't said what.To be honest though, they will never be able to get over the inherent advantage range has over melee, they are going to have to create a new way to elevate melee to the same level and it really has been that way forever. Ranged, in every game I've ever played has always had an edge over melee just due to the inherent survivability boon of not having to be within melee range.Blizzard had no idea how to attempt to balance it in Diablo 3, this is after Diablo 2 and WoW... their solution? Give those classes an inherent 30% multiplicative damage increase and they were still worse then their ranged counterparts until they made them invincible.

Interesting. I played D2 for years. Towards the end, I had 2 main chars. 1 was a Necro, summoner/ranged. Other was a Palidan that did melee. I would have to combine them to do end game runs. Most areas the Palidan ruled, but some he couldn't do and I had to bring the Necro in. Had to do with reflect, iirc.

LOL got my IIR up to 363% running aura's to get my life down to 35% using unique shoes. I have a total of 400 life left LOL. Hello low level meet my level 75 templar while I farm the #### out of you!

I was cruising through Merciless act 2 with 2.5k ES and 400 life, got to act 3 and 2.5k ES is just not enough even with my totems getting most of the attention.Gonna need a better ES Chest.

Yeah when poison small charms were being duped in mass a paladin could get away with Zeal, but they were pretty useless after that. Until I think it was 1.10 of LoD that gave Blessed Hammer a use, and the hammerdin was born, melee-range caster only other viable build was Smiter which used a combination of mechanics that were great, namely stun and crippling blows, the former being a flat amount of time that a mob was stunned and the latter being a proc effect that would reduce a mobs health by a fraction (1/4 for normal, 1/8 for magic, 1/16 for rare and bosses I believe) the fact that they both worked on bosses made them pretty strong. Pre lord of destruction Melee was imbalanced but it worked out because the ranged abilities were good enough, post lord of destruction there were a handful of gimmick melee builds and the range build crushed all of them.

Think my Palidan was a smiter. It worked because of stun and life leech. Kind of like my Marauder...

Traded my exalt for 32 chaos. Good deal? Bad deal?
I think by the online exchanges you did fine. On the other hand, for the top end gear to be purchased people want pure exalts and thus I am going to start keeping all of mine.
I don't really look at this game in the long term. The grind kills me after a time. I looked at it like 32 scratch-off cards to gear out a character. Seemed pretty good. :)

I kind of want to see how well I can gear my LA ranger just for fun. I already have a pretty nice bow. BGE - if I craft a good bow, you can have my current one. I can guarantee it will be a nice upgrade for you.

It is a 6S 4L2L 76-204 phys dmg, +26 dex, +12-27 cold dmg. You could try re-rolling with chaos, but you would lose that nice phys dmg - it is a +142% mod. There is also some crit and accuracy in there.

hmm, sounds like the DPS might be similar depending on the attack speed. The 1.55 attack speed and fire resistance mods on this bow make it pretty decent.

4s-4L I am not looking for extra sockets unless I can get a 5L, which I know is rare.

0.10.7 Patch Notes posted, should go live some time tonight.

Some great stuff in this patch, four new uniques, increased burning damage gem (this is big, I'm definitely making a fire trap build now), new flask mods, new item mods, increased drop rates of uniques.

EDIT: Chris Wilson answered some question about 0.10.7, the increased drop rate of uniques is a 100% increase, thats a free 100 Increased item rarity in terms of uniques only - or simply with no increased item rarity you are twice as likely now to find a unique.

Version 0.10.7
Content:

  • Added a new Intelligence/Strength Support Gem - Summon Elemental Resistance. This is first offered to the Witch and Templar in Act Two of Normal difficulty, the Shadow and Marauder in Act Three of Normal difficulty and to Rangers and Duelists in Act One of Cruel difficulty.
  • Added a new Strenth/Intelligence Support Gem - Increased Burning Damage. This is first offered to the Witch, Templar and Marauder at the Medicine Chest quest in Cruel difficulty and to the other classes in Act Three of Cruel difficulty.
  • Added four new Unique items, two of which were designed by our Diamond supporters. One of these is a Unique Map.
  • Added two new cosmetic microtransactions: Ebony Weapon Effect and Ivory Weapon Effect.
  • Added a new Map mod - "of Ice": Area has patches of Chilled Ground (worth 8% quantity).
  • Added a new Map mod - "Chaining": Monsters' skills chain two additional times (worth 18% quantity).
  • Added a new Flask Mod - "of Staunching": Removes Bleeding.
  • Added a new Flask Mod - "of Grounding": Dispels Shocked.
  • Added new Item Mods - "of the Worthy" and "of the Apt": Reduced attribute requirements to equip an item.
  • Added new Item Mods - "of Shining", "of Light" and "of Radiance": Increased accuracy and light radius.
  • The following Unique items now have custom 3D art: Atziri's Mirror, Matua Tupuna, Prism Guardian, Crest of Perandus, Rise of the Phoenix, Lioneye's Remorse, Rathpith Globe and Daresso's Courage.
  • The following alternate art Unique items that were given out as prizes for Race Season One now have custom 3D art: Facebreaker, Wanderlust, Goldrim, Atziri's Mirror and Demigod's Triumph.
  • The Way Forward quest now requires you to kill a Unique blackguard called Captail Arteri who is guarding the blockage.
  • Changed the mouse cursor to a larger one that is easier to see in a variety of environments and combat situations.
  • Continued to incrementally improve the art, effects and environments and audio.
Features:
  • Skills bound to the middle and right mouse buttons can now be bound to a key instead.
  • The middle mouse button, right mouse button and two additional buttons (mouse4/5) can now be bound to various functions like skills, flasks, item highlighting or opening the inventory.
  • More keys are now available to be bound: insert, home, end, delete and the arrow keys. Keybindings for international keys are still being developed.
  • We have standardised the TCP port that the game uses for instance server connections to one that is less likely to be affected by packet shaping. This may improve network performance with some ISPs.
  • When creating a hardcore character, there's now a warning message explaining that we will not restore dead hardcore characters.
  • Gems on the ground now do not show their level in their name if they are level one.
Balance Changes:
  • The Multistrike support gem's damage penalty is now "Less Attack Damage" rather than "Less Melee Damage". This affects Lightning Strike's projectiles which were not intended to have no penalty with this support gem.
  • Increased the drop rate of Unique items.
  • An Orb of Chance is now much more likely to create common Unique items and less likely to generate uncommon or rare Unique items.
Map Mod Balance Changes:
  • Armoured - quantity bonus increased from 6% to 8%.
  • Capricious - quantity bonus increased from 8% to 14%.
  • Grounded - quantity bonus increased from 6% to 8%.
  • Incombustible - quantity bonus increased from 6% to 8%.
  • Mirrored - quantity bonus increased from 12% to 18%.
  • Molten - quantity bonus increased from 6% to 8%.
  • Punishing - quantity bonus increased from 12% to 18%.
  • Splitting - quantity bonus increased from 12% to 18%.
  • Unwavering - quantity bonus increased from 6% to 12%.
  • of Exposure - quantity bonus increased from 15% to 30%.
  • of Smothering - quantity bonus reduced from 30% to 20%.
  • of Vulnerability - quantity bonus increased from 18% to 25%.
Bug Fixes:
  • If there is no room for items to drop on the ground when a monster dies, they now stack on top of other items rather than not dropping.
  • Fixed a bug where internal teleports inside levels could fail to change the environment.
  • You can no longer close the options panel by opening another panel if there are unsaved changes to the options.
  • Fixed a bug in cut-throat leagues where the experience death penalty would not be awarded to the killer correctly.
  • Fixed a bug where the character says "It would be wrong to do that here" when using the move-only command in town.
  • Fixed the Marauder passive skill that reduced extra critical damage so that it behaves correctly.
  • Fixed a bug where the additional critical damage applied by the Critical Weakness curse didn't work correctly.

can someone give me a rundown of changing values of an item with chaos? I guess I could make an item useless trying to upgrade it?

Chaos rolls are essentially just that, pretty chaotic. When you use one it first rolls to determine if the rare will get 4, 5 or 6 affixes. However many you rolled will then be added as random affixes (up to 3 prefix, 3 up to suffix) and finally it will roll the tier of that affix. Certain items have access to different affix pools, I would recommend checking the official site for the affix list. Its entirely possible to roll a ilvl 79 item (highest ilvl atm I believe) and get 6 lowest tier rolls. That the problem is that you can get 5 amazing rolls on the stats you want and get a terrible roll on the stat you want most, its a give and take. But at the price of chaos at the moment, I would say that if you have a good base item (high item level, the proper amount of sockets you want) its worth chaos rolling that item till you get something you want rather than rolling it from the bottom up.

I have a few 5L bows. I don't know if I'm selling them or not but right now I have one equipped and a couple sitting in storage.

The better one in storage looks like this:

Decimation Bow

5L 5S GGGRR

Quality: +20%

Physical Damage: 60-162

Cold Damage: 12-24

Lightning Damage: 3-67

Crit: 6%

APS: 1.10 (terrible, I know)

I could loan it out and you can see how you like it.

So if you were creating a LA ranger, when setting up your gear, would you go AR, AR/ER, AR/ES or ER/ES for the armor? I was planning on either AR/ES or ER/ES interchangeably. Does that sound right? I figure ES is like additional health and would be valuable as you quality it and hopefully get a good mod. My goal would be to get an OK iLevel item with 4L for each of helm, boots and gloves and then play with the chaos. Want at least 5L for bow and armor, looking for a thicket like everyone I guess.

Thanks for the offer. Everyone on this thread is so cool. It makes the game so much more fun to play. I am going to stick with my bow for now. Shame about the APS on your 5l. If that were in the 1.4-1.5 range, that would be a pretty nice bow.

I have enjoyed going full evasion for my bow ranger. It is pretty easy to get massive evasion numbers on gear and then use Iron Reflexes to convert all to armor. There are a ton of 10% increase evasion nodes available near the Ranger tree which allows you to grow very fast. What makes you want to craft a Thicket bow more than others? Is it the attack speed?

Yes. With LA it is all about spamming the chained LA - not about the physical dmg done.

That said, I have a citadel bow at 1.2 6S in hand and nothing close in thicket. For me being a casual player, I am thinking I would rather save those orbs for a different piece of gear and just trying some linking with this 6S I have. I am not too concerned about 3 attacks over a 10 second period.

Looking to buy Quality Fire Trap as well as a 5L or 6S Searing Touch unique staff.

I would go AR/EV with Iron Reflexes, every time.

The mitigation makes that much of a difference vs ES then? Interesting. What about pure EV with Iron Reflexes?

Pure evasion is just as good as Armor/Evasion with iron reflexes, you just get less flexibility. Its essentially the same thing.

Unless you take a strange path from the Ranger tree, you are going to have significantly more chances to improve evasion from a passive than ES from a passive.

I really want to get some gear with increased light radius. Found gear with 5,10 and 15% tonight, but it was all trash otherwise. If I'd known 15% was the highest I might have thrown some orbs at it, think it was a helm or gloves or something.

that would be awesome -- didn't even know they had that.

those dark areas creep me out, although fire trap helps a bit.

It just got put in this patch. I think there was a unique that had it before.

I might be mistaken but I think the increased light radius affix is a hybrid mod that also has % increased accuracy, and its a prefix which means it sucks, if it was a suffix it would be great.

The POS Skill Tree App is now available for Android devices. They have also submitted the App to the IOS App Store and are just waiting final approval which they expect will be soon.

I picked up two some what related Q Gems last night that made me think about a possible new character some day.

Critical Weakness - Curse

Increased Critical Damage - Support

If I was considering a crit based character, what would you recommend?

Well that was nasty :(

Finally made it to Vaal in Merciless and got annihilated. Was getting one shot killed constantly. Finally found a tiny niche in getting in right next to Vaal when shooting the ice which would not hit me. But that usually just led to an immediate one shot death as soon as it changed attacks.

I can whittle with the best of them :)

On to Act 3 in Merciless. At level 69 now.

It is a hybrid with accuracy, but it is a suffix according to the Wiki.
The other accuracy mod if a suffix, I was told yesterday this one was a prefix, I've done no testing myself. If its a suffix however I gladly welcome it instead of the other handful of throw away affixes. Percent accuracy is huge, and the light radius is welcomed.EDIT: nvm, I just checked the official website affix list... both accuracy mods are suffixes, huzzah! Only the top tier roll is % accuracy but its huge, 10% is like a whole skill point

of Shining ilvl 8- Light Radius +% 5- Accuracy Rating 10 to 20of Light ilvl 15- Light Radius +%10- Accuracy Rating 21 to 40of Radiance ilvl 30- Light Radius +% 15- Accurcy Rating +% 5 to 10

Damn. Knew I shouldn't have vendored the of Radiance rare gloves I found.

Since getting my IIR up to 363 I am averaging around 3 uniques a day playing. The problem is they all suck!
didn't they just double the unique drop rate?

and the crappy ones are probably the common ones.
I dunno about the drop rate? But, the amount of unique's that suck are too many. Many unique's are less than 1 chaos value each. If you could sell them at all. I would rather have very very good unique drops and less of them.

I have only seen one unique, so I shouldn't talk, but it depends on how you look at it.

I'm assuming there are very good uniques that drop less often, just as you want, but then a bunch of crap uniques added in over the top.

what's the difference if those crap uniques are added or not?

Ok for example I just picked up these 2 since talking about this topic 30 minutes ago.

Brightbeak War Hammer and Sidhebreath Paua Amulet
